Living History Weekend at Fort Atkinson
Travel 200 years back in time and experience history on the Great Plains at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park!
Ongoing demonstrations featuring military and civilian life of the 1820s will occur throughout the park. Reenactors portray fur traders, coopers, blacksmiths, carpenters, tinsmiths, weavers and other period trades. The History Trailer will also be displayed during the event. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the reenactors.
Schedule (tentative)
Saturday, Oct. 3
10 a.m. – The Troop: roll call, inspection, raise colors and morning gun (flagpole)
10 a.m. – “Butchering the bison” demonstration presented by Steve Tamayo (Saturday only)
10:45 a.m. – Cooking bison meat (Bake Oven)
11 a.m. – Harvesting demonstration: transport wagon from the Sutler Store (north gate)
11:30 a.m. – Mountain man presentation
Noon – Noon gun at the flagpole
12:30 p.m. – Apple press (southeast gate)
1 p.m. – Military demonstration (travois taking grain to oven)
1:30 p.m. – Mountain man presentation (cabin)
4 p.m. – The Retreat: roll call, inspection and evening gun at the flagpole
Sunday, Oct. 4
10:30 a.m. – Church
10:45 a.m. – Harvesting (rotation of Sgt.)
11 a.m. – Native dancing
1 p.m. – Native dancing
3 p.m. – Native dancing
Visitor Center admission
- -Adults (13 & up): $5
- -Children 3-12: $1
- -2 and under: Free
A valid Nebraska Park Entry Permit is required for all vehicles to enter the park and can be purchased at the site.
