Living History Weekend at Fort Atkinson

Historical reenactors light a canon at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park.

Travel 200 years back in time and experience history on the Great Plains at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park!

Ongoing demonstrations featuring military and civilian life of the 1820s will occur throughout the park. Reenactors portray fur traders, coopers, blacksmiths, carpenters, tinsmiths, weavers and other period trades. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the reenactors.

Special activities

–Historical wedding reenactments: Watch a reenactment of a wedding from 200 years ago!

–Time period dancing (Saturday only): Enjoy dancing with reenactors to music and moves from the past.

Schedule

10 a.m. – The Troop (roll call, inspection, raise colors and morning gun fife & drum)
10:15 a.m. – Simple wedding ceremony for the Winninghams
10:30 a.m. – Presentation of Lt. and Mrs. Joseph Pentland to commanding officer
10:30 a.m. – Church (Sunday only on North Barrack)
11 a.m. – Dancing at the Council House by the Old Dominion Dancers (Saturday only)
11:15 a.m. – Wedding treats in the Council House
Noon – Noon gun
1 p.m. – Military demonstration and drilling (ongoing)
3 p.m. – Inspection of the barracks
3:30 p.m. – Whiskey ration
4 p.m. – The Retreat (roll call, inspection and evening gun)

Visitor Center Admission
  • Adults (13 & up): $5
  • Children 3-12: $1
  • 2 and under: Free

A valid Nebraska Park Entry Permit is required for all vehicles to enter the park and can be purchased at the site.
