DESCRIPTION:September 15th\, 2025| 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm (CST) Register Here   \nA conversation at a Nebraska Natural Legacy Conference regarding reintroduction of mussels to Cub Creek set in motion a series of questions that could be only answered through monitoring.  In this presentation Resource Management Specialist Jesse Bolli will take you through those questions while introducing you to the mussels of Homestead National Historical Park and why they matter.  \nPresenter: Jesse Bolli\, Resource Management Specialist\, NPS-Homestead National Historical Park \nPresenter Bio: Jesse Bolli began his position as the Resource Management Specialist at Homestead National Historical Park in September 2002.  His duties at Homestead include the management of the Nation’s second oldest restored tallgrass prairie\, a lowland bur oak forest\, Cub Creek and the wildlife within.  He is happiest when he is mentoring others\, helping them to see the delicate details of the natural world.  \nPrior to arriving at Homestead National Monument of America\, he worked in Florida\, Nebraska\, and Kansas as a federal wildland firefighter.  \nJesse received his Bachelors of Science in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences from South Dakota State University in Brookings\, South Dakota.  \nHe grew up near Burwell\, Nebraska on the homestead that his great granddad proved up on under the Homestead Act of 1862 in 1905.  It was on the homestead that he developed his love of the prairies and wildlife.   \n  \nThis webinar is part of the Master Naturalist Mondays webinar series. DESCRIPTION:July 28th\, 2025| 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm (CST) Register Here   \nUsing Native Plants: The Why\, What\, and How \nPresenter: Cathy Prettyman\, native plant gardener\, Nebraska Master Naturalist\, Native Planters of Blair\, Pollinator Alliance of the Heartland \nPresenter Bio: I’ve always had a love of nature. As a child I collected butterflies\, kept caterpillars as pets and explored the woods behind our home. I have been birding and gardening for over 30 years. I moved to rural Blair in 2015 and I fell in love with the prairie and learned about its plants. I became a Nebraska Master Naturalist in 2018 with the desire to learn more about our great state and to teach others the importance of the natural world. I am  involved with the PATH\, Pollinator Alliance of the Heartland\, a Nebraska based organization promoting the use of native plants in our landscape. I have helped design\, plant and maintain pollinator gardens at Ft Atkinson State Park in Ft Calhoun. I created and led the charge to plant a pollinator garden at Black Elk-Neihardt park in Blair and with the help of volunteers\, continue to maintain. I am involved with other Blair projects. Last year was the Blair  Main Street revitalization. I helped with selection and design of sidewalk beds using native plants. This year I’m designing native planting beds for the new dog park and an Art Alley project to be installed hopefully this fall.  Another project\, at the historic Florence Mill in Omaha\, is using native plants and trees to educate the public on the uses of the plants. This spring we added a native tall grass bed behind the mill.  \nThis webinar is part of the Master Naturalist Mondays webinar series. You get to your favorite fishing hole\, throw a line out\, and are immediately caught in the “weeds” as you try and reel in. When thinking of aquatic invasive species thoughts often arise of critters such as jumping carp\, zebra mussels\, or crawling crayfish. However\, the most widespread AIS issue in Nebraska is not these species but actually invasive aquatic plants. Come listen to Kristopher Stahr\, NGPC AIS Program Manager (often called the weed doctor)\, describe the impact these species are having in Nebraska and the efforts being undertaken to control these pesky plants in our waters. \nPresenter: Kristopher Stahr\, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission \nKristopher is the NGPC’S AIS Manager since the program was created in 2020. He first began working with aquatic invasive species as a temporary in Iowa in 2009. We absolutely need to suppress their growth and spread and limit the damage they cause. However\, Nebraska also has a lot of other plants that we call ‘weeds’ or ‘weedy’ that really aren’t harmful at all. Many of them are just opportunists who can appear quicky and in big numbers when nearby plant competition is reduced by grazing\, flooding\, fire\, or other forces. Those opportunists provide great pollinator and wildlife value or\, at worst\, just come and go without really causing any lasting damage to anyone or anything. Let’s talk about how to tell the difference and why it matters. \nPresenter: Chris Helzer\, The Nature Conservancy \nChris Helzer is the Nebraska Director of Science and Stewardship for The Nature Conservancy. He conducts research on grasslands\, helps develop and test land management strategies\, supervises the stewardship of the Conservancy’s staffed preserves in Nebraska\, and spends lot of time blathering on about how beautiful and valuable prairies are. DESCRIPTION:Not plant\, not animal\, not fungus…so what is it? It’s a slime mold. Slime Molds come in every color of the rainbow\, except a true green and can form strange and sophisticated shapes. DESCRIPTION:Each basic category of animal has its own unique way of smelling. Science shows that most animals have a sense of smell\, but the organ they use to smell can vary widely across the animal kingdom. A Turkey Vulture smelling looks incredibly different than a coyote smelling. In this Science Of episode\, we will focus on what it actually means to “smell” and what that looks like in birds\, mammals\, insects\, reptiles\, and amphibians. Why do animals need to smell\, and what are they communicating to each other by doing this?
