Join us in the park around the Hatch House and Canyon Ponds as we celebrate outdoor time and nature’s beauty as summer transitions to fall. \nWe will have outdoor activities like round rafting and canoeing on the park ponds\, kids fishing\, geology\, outdoor cooking\, and other nature activities. \nEnjoy live music from Mark Irvin Music. Hotdog and bison burger meals will be available for purchase (card only). Black Cow Dairy will be on site to sell ice cream. \nThe Treehouse Classroom will be open from 5-8 p.m. \nJoin naturalists for a night hike to end the evening from 8-9 p.m. \nThis event is free and open to the public. A valid state park vehicle permit is required for entry. A map will be available at arrival with a list of all activities and locations.

SUMMARY:Schramm After Dark: Moth Lighting
DESCRIPTION:In celebration of National Moth Week\, educators from Nebraska Extension and Nebraska Game and Parks will lead a moth lighting at Schramm Park State Recreation Area. Bring a flashlight\, search for moths at the light trap\, and learn about moths and other nocturnal insects in Nebraska. We will use the iNaturalist app to document the species we encounter and collect data about nocturnal insects in the park. Data collected during this event will contribute to the Biodiversity in Nebraska State Parks initiative.\n**Collection of insects at this event is not permitted.**\n\nMeet at the park shelter next to pond A. A state park vehicle entry permit is required for vehicles entering the park. Visitors may also park in the parking lot of the Schramm Education Center (no permit required) and walk to the park shelter.\n\nAccommodation requests for attendance may be directed to Kait Chapman at least two weeks prior to the program at kchapman13@unl.edu or 402-441-7180. Early requests are strongly encouraged to allow sufficient time to meet access needs.

Sign up to join us at the Schramm Treehouse Classroom for a kite-making workshop on Free Park Entry Day and in celebration of Nebraska Bird Month. Dominique Ellis with the Center for Great Plains Studies and Great Plains Art Museum will lead this hands-on\, kid-friendly workshop. We’ll start with a short presentation about the rich cultural history of kites\, look at some Nebraska birds for inspiration\, and then dive into constructing and decorating your own bird kite to take home.\nPlease register in advance here: https://arcg.is/1XCqvT1. This workshop is limited to 25 kite makers. While all ages are welcome\, kite construction is best accomplished by ages 8+.

Join NGPC staff as we work on activities such as invasive species removal\, seed collection\, trail maintenance\, brush piling\, and tree planting.\nRegister in advance if plan to attend so we can estimate head count for work materials: https://arcg.is/H1L5S2\nWear sturdy\, closed-toed shoes and long pants\, bring water\, and outdoor work/garden gloves. Long sleeves are also recommended. All ages are welcome for this opportunity\, but anyone under the age of 18 must have an accompanying adult.\nMeet at the park shelter next to Pond A. We’ll kick things off with an introduction to the project at the posted start time and then get started. Volunteers will need to sign a standard volunteer waiver upon arrival. We are meeting in the park\, so a state park vehicle permit is required.

DESCRIPTION:Start off your new year in Nebraska’s great outdoors with a First Day Hike at Schramm Park SRA! \nMeet at the Schramm Education Center at 10:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day. Choose which hike works best for you: a short hike along our Catalpa Trail with flatter terrain\, or a longer hike at Schramm Park SRA through the forested hills. Following the hike\, we will have a winter art activity for kids and a campfire for roasting marshmallows. \nPrepare for the hike: dress in layers\, wear a hat\, bring a water bottle and check the forecast. Dogs are welcome on a six-foot leash. \nNote that programs may be altered due to weather and trail conditions. Check the Schramm Education Center Facebook page for cancellations/modified schedules if severe weather advisories are in the area.

SUMMARY:Night Hike at Schramm Park
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the sounds of the forest on a crisp winter night and join Schramm naturalists to hike the forest after nightfall.\n\nMeet at the pond trailhead and bring a flashlight or head lamp. We will hike for about an hour and will walk about 2 miles\, from the Pond Trailhead along the Hackberry Trail to the full Red Cedar Trail loop. There are stairs at the trailhead and one spot along the hike where there will be an elevation change and we will walk up a hill.\nThis is a free program\, but a State Park Vehicle Entry Permit is required. If you do not already have one\, a daily park permit can be purchased at the self-service box at the park entrance that night with exact cash or check ($7 for Nebraska licensed vehicles; $14 for non-Nebraska licensed vehicles).
