DESCRIPTION:Join us for a nature-filled Bioblitz at beautiful Ponca State Park on Saturday\, June 21. \nEnjoy many nature-themed activities and learn from Nebraska wildlife biologists and experts\, discovering and identifying as many plants and animals as possible while contributing to real scientific research. \nWhether you’re a seasoned naturalist\, beginner wildlife enthusiast\, student or family looking for a fun outdoor activity\, there is something for everyone. \nAll materials for sessions are provided. Harlan and Lucia are permanent residents who were injured in the wild and not able to be released.  \nCost: $2/person \n7:15 p.m. – Owl Pellets — Learn how owls swallow their prey whole and then regurgitate the undigestible material; the owl pellet. Participants will be given an owl pellet to investigate\, dissect\, and ID. \nCost: $3/kit; Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center 8 a.m.–7 p.m. \n\n\n\nSaturday\, May 24\n8:30 a.m. – Birds & Binoculars — Join a naturalist to learn how to use binoculars for bird viewing\, borrow a pair from us or bring your own. We’ll take a short walk to frequently visited bird feeders and popular perching spots for a chance to see the many species that call Ponca State Park home. This activity is free. Meet in the Display Wing of the Resource and Education Center. \n10 a.m. – Gonna Find Me A Bluebird — Learn about the Bluebirds that spend the summer at Ponca State Park. Discuss bluebird life\, history\, and habitat needs. Inspect bluebird boxes\, observe nests\, eggs\, and both adult and young birds. Receive plans to build your own bluebird boxes and discuss suggestions on best locations to install boxes. This activity is free. Meet at the Resource & Education Center. \n11:30 a.m. – Build Your Own Birdfeeder — Learn about the birds that live around Ponca State Park! Create a pinecone and peanut butter feeder to take back to your cabin or home. \nCost: $2/kit; Pre-register and pay at the Resource & Education Center 8 a.m.–11:20 a.m. Meet behind the Resource & Education Center. \n1:30pm Build Your Own Wren House — House Wrens are a small\, very active and inquisitive bird with a rich bubbling song. Construct a wren house to take home and place in your own yard. They are comfortable nesting near human dwellings. Wood is precut and some of the construction is already started. Necessary tools and other required items are provided. Children will need adult supervision to complete construction using basic hand tools. DESCRIPTION:Youth Fishing Instructors are part of the Youth Fishing Program\, a statewide team of volunteers and Game and Parks staff who host educational fishing events. \nWorkshop participants will receive training and tools to conduct youth fishing clinics. These volunteers will have access to Game and Parks’ loaner fishing equipment and educational materials for events. They also will receive program incentives. SUMMARY:Beginning Fly-Fishing and Fly-Tying at Ponca State Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Beginners Fly-Fishing and Fly-Tying Class at Ponca State Park April 26. \nAnglers can learn the basics of fly fishing and fly tying that will prepare them to catch trout and panfish this spring. Two workshops\, which are open to new and experienced fly fishers\, will include all fishing equipment\, materials and tools needed.  \nThere is a limit of 25 participants for each class and we would prefer that participants be of sufficient age to comfortably and confidently handle a 9 ft – 5 or 6 wt. fly rod.  This usually means that kids under about 12 years of age may have difficulty adequately handling a fly rod of that length and weight to move the line needed for casting.  If you have questions about this for potential younger participants\, please contact us at Cornhuskerflyfishers@gmail.com or larry.pape@nebraska.gov. \nThe Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will host this workshop\, led and taught by members of the Cornhusker Fly Fishers Club. \nCost: $25 per person per event for lunch\, refreshments and facilities (limited to the first 25 registrants at each event). \nRegister Here  \nDirections on how to pay will be given in a follow-up email from Cornhusker Fly Fishing Club after registration on the Sign-Up Genius Website.

DESCRIPTION:Highly anticipated Ladies Day on the Range event isn’t just about hitting targets; it’s about equipping women with knowledge and skills to feel confident and secure operating a firearm or archery equipment On April 26 from 9 – 11 a.m. Ponca State Park is just one of the six locations take part in the event. \nThroughout the event\, participants can try shotguns  and .22 handguns. The day is designed to blend education\, camaraderie and fun! \nCertified instructors will provide participants with a solid understanding of safety\, aiming techniques\, and firing basics. Whether you’re a seasoned shooter or new\, our welcoming atmosphere and expert instruction will ensure an unforgettable experience for women of all skill levels. \nEquipment and materials will be available to try or participants may bring their own. Ranges will vary on which firearm and archery is offered that day. \nAdvance registration fee is $15 and receive an outdoor related gift. Fee is $20 for those that don’t register before April 26. State park permit required.
