SUMMARY:FULL - Beginning Fly-Fishing and Fly-Tying at Ponca State Park
DESCRIPTION:Registration is full for this event. \nJoin us for a Beginners Fly-Fishing and Fly-Tying Class at Ponca State Park April 11. \nAnglers can learn the basics of fly fishing such as casting\, fly tying\, and basic knots\, intended to prepare them to catch trout and panfish this spring. The workshop\, which is open to new and experienced fly fishers\, will include all fishing equipment\, materials and tools needed. \nThere is a limit of 25 participants for the class and we would prefer that participants be of sufficient age to comfortably and confidently handle a 9 ft – 5 or 6 wt. fly rod.  This usually means that kids under about 12 years of age may have difficulty adequately handling a fly rod of that length and weight to move the line needed for casting.  If you have questions about this class for potential younger participants\, please contact us at Cornhuskerflyfishers@gmail.com or larry.pape@nebraska.gov. \nThe Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will host this workshop\, led and taught by members of the Cornhusker Fly Fishers Club. \nCost: $25 per person per event for lunch\, refreshments and facilities (limited to the first 25 registrants at each event). \nRegister Here  \nDirections on how to pay for the class will be given in a follow-up email from the Cornhusker Fly Fishing Club after registration on the Sign-Up Genius Website.

DESCRIPTION:Join Ponca State Park Naturalists on the Corps of Discovery Trail to watch the moon rise!  \nMeet at the Riverfront Playground for guided hikes (approximately one hour) along the beautiful wooded trails. These hikes will include some steep inclines and are considered moderately challenging. Hikers are encouraged to bring water and snacks. \nHandheld flashlights will be provided. SUMMARY:Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Learn to Hunt Safely Weekend
DESCRIPTION:A hunter education focused weekend designed to give women the chance to learn the basics of hunter safety and gain firsthand firearm and archery experience in a fun\, safe environment. Basic hunter education course material will be taught through simulated hunting situations\, live fire exercises\, education and responsibility activities. Workshops will be led by women who are experienced hunters and certified volunteer hunter education instructors. \nFemale participants ages 12 years through 18 are required to be accompanied by a participating adult the full weekend. \n$200 Fee includes cabin lodging at Ponca State Park and meals. Note that participants will share a cabin.  Assignments will be made by the event coordinator unless otherwise noted. (separate bedrooms). \nREGISTER HERE \nAll equipment\, including archery and firearms will be provided.\nHunter Education certificate will be given at the end of the weekend.

Harlan and Lucia are permanent residents who were injured in the wild and not able to be released.  \nCost: $2/person \n7:15 p.m. – Owl Pellets — Learn how owls swallow their prey whole and then regurgitate the undigestible material; the owl pellet. Participants will be given an owl pellet to investigate\, dissect\, and ID. \nCost: $3/kit; Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center 8 a.m.–7 p.m. \n\n\n\nSaturday\, May 24\n8:30 a.m. – Birds & Binoculars — Join a naturalist to learn how to use binoculars for bird viewing\, borrow a pair from us or bring your own. We’ll take a short walk to frequently visited bird feeders and popular perching spots for a chance to see the many species that call Ponca State Park home. This activity is free. Meet in the Display Wing of the Resource and Education Center. \n10 a.m. – Gonna Find Me A Bluebird — Learn about the Bluebirds that spend the summer at Ponca State Park. Discuss bluebird life\, history\, and habitat needs. Inspect bluebird boxes\, observe nests\, eggs\, and both adult and young birds. Receive plans to build your own bluebird boxes and discuss suggestions on best locations to install boxes. This activity is free. Meet at the Resource & Education Center. \n11:30 a.m. – Build Your Own Birdfeeder — Learn about the birds that live around Ponca State Park! Create a pinecone and peanut butter feeder to take back to your cabin or home. \nCost: $2/kit; Pre-register and pay at the Resource & Education Center 8 a.m.–11:20 a.m. Meet behind the Resource & Education Center. \n1:30pm Build Your Own Wren House — House Wrens are a small\, very active and inquisitive bird with a rich bubbling song. Construct a wren house to take home and place in your own yard. They are comfortable nesting near human dwellings. Wood is precut and some of the construction is already started. Necessary tools and other required items are provided. Children will need adult supervision to complete construction using basic hand tools. SUMMARY:Youth Fishing Instructor Certification Class\, Ponca State Park
DESCRIPTION:Youth Fishing Instructors are part of the Youth Fishing Program\, a statewide team of volunteers and Game and Parks staff who host educational fishing events. \nWorkshop participants will receive training and tools to conduct youth fishing clinics. These volunteers will have access to Game and Parks’ loaner fishing equipment and educational materials for events. They also will receive program incentives.
