The trail will end with a warm fire and fresh baked dessert in a dutch oven. A perfect mix of fresh air\, nature\, and a sweet treat! \nCost: $15 per person (card only) \nPRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED – Spots are limited and you must pre-register and pay by calling the park office at 402-755-2284. PIKEs are currently scheduled every second Saturday from Jan. 10 to Dec. 12\, 2026. \nA valid Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for entry and can be purchased at the park entrance or online.

These hikes will include some steep inclines and are considered moderately challenging. Hikers are encouraged to bring water and snacks. \nHandheld flashlights will be provided. DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Nebraska Bird Month on Saturday\, May 23 at Ponca State Park! \n9-11 a.m. – All About Bluebirds program: Learn about the bluebirds that spend their summer at Ponca State Park. Inspect bluebird boxes\, observe nests\, eggs\, and birds. Meet at the backwaters parking lot. \n  \nNoon-2 p.m. – Build Your Own Birdfeeders: Learn about birds that live near Ponca State Park. Create a pinecone and peanut butter feeder to take back to your cabin or home! There is a cost of $3 per person for this session. Meet at the Resource and Education Center. \n  \n3-5 p.m. – Owl Pellets: Learn how owls swallow their prey whole and then regurgitate the indigestible material. Participants will be given an owl pellet to investigate\, dissect\, and ID. There is a $4 cost per person for this program. \n  \nA valid state park vehicle permit is required for park entry. \n

DESCRIPTION:Become a certified Youth Fishing Instructor by attending a class at Ponca State Park’s Visitor Center in northeast Nebraska on Saturday\, April 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. \nYouth Fishing Instructors are part of the Youth Fishing Program\, a statewide team of volunteers and Game and Parks staff who host educational fishing events. \nWorkshop participants will receive training and tools to conduct youth fishing clinics. These volunteers will have access to Game and Parks’ loaner fishing equipment and educational materials for events. They also will receive program incentives. DESCRIPTION:Registration is full for this event. \nJoin us for a Beginners Fly-Fishing and Fly-Tying Class at Ponca State Park April 11. \nAnglers can learn the basics of fly fishing such as casting\, fly tying\, and basic knots\, intended to prepare them to catch trout and panfish this spring. The workshop\, which is open to new and experienced fly fishers\, will include all fishing equipment\, materials and tools needed. \nThere is a limit of 25 participants for the class and we would prefer that participants be of sufficient age to comfortably and confidently handle a 9 ft – 5 or 6 wt. fly rod.  This usually means that kids under about 12 years of age may have difficulty adequately handling a fly rod of that length and weight to move the line needed for casting.  If you have questions about this class for potential younger participants\, please contact us at Cornhuskerflyfishers@gmail.com or larry.pape@nebraska.gov. \nThe Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will host this workshop\, led and taught by members of the Cornhusker Fly Fishers Club. \nCost: $25 per person per event for lunch\, refreshments and facilities (limited to the first 25 registrants at each event). \nRegister Here  \nDirections on how to pay for the class will be given in a follow-up email from the Cornhusker Fly Fishing Club after registration on the Sign-Up Genius Website.

SUMMARY:Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Learn to Hunt Safely Weekend
DESCRIPTION:A hunter education focused weekend designed to give women the chance to learn the basics of hunter safety and gain firsthand firearm and archery experience in a fun\, safe environment. Basic hunter education course material will be taught through simulated hunting situations\, live fire exercises\, education and responsibility activities. Workshops will be led by women who are experienced hunters and certified volunteer hunter education instructors. \nFemale participants ages 12 years through 18 are required to be accompanied by a participating adult the full weekend. \n$200 Fee includes cabin lodging at Ponca State Park and meals. Note that participants will share a cabin.  Assignments will be made by the event coordinator unless otherwise noted. (separate bedrooms). \nREGISTER HERE \nAll equipment\, including archery and firearms will be provided.\nHunter Education certificate will be given at the end of the weekend.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a monthly PIKE — a Naturalist-led group hike — at beautiful Ponca State Park! \nMeet at the West Shelter at 10 a.m. and enjoy the scenic views\, native wildlife\, and fellowship until 12:30 p.m. Along the way\, Naturalists will talk about the cultural and natural history of the park and the flora and fauna found in the area. The trail will end with a warm fire and fresh baked dessert in a dutch oven. A perfect mix of fresh air\, nature\, and a sweet treat! \nCost: $15 per person (card only) \nPRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED – Spots are limited and you must pre-register and pay by calling the park office at 402-755-2284. PIKEs are currently scheduled every second Saturday from Jan. 10 to Dec. 12\, 2026. \nA valid Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for entry and can be purchased at the park entrance or online.

DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to join our Park Naturalists\, local Audubon Society and fellow bird enthusiasts for our annual Christmas Bird Count at Ponca State Park on Sunday\, Dec. 14!\n\nWe will meet at the Resource and Education Center then break into teams. Come join the fun; learn bird identification tips and see some uncommon species. We’ll kick off day with our Early Morning Christmas Bird Count. A free soup lunch will be served at noon for those in attendance. The day with conclude with an Afternoon Christmas Bird Count.\nPonca State Park’s Christmas Bird Count is part of a nationwide Christmas Bird Count conducted by the National Audubon Society\, where data collected is utilized by conservationists and researchers around the world. \nPlease dress for the weather; and bring a water bottle\, binoculars\, and bird book. If you do not have binoculars or a bird book\, Ponca State Park will loan them to you. \nA valid state park vehicle permit is required for park entry.
