DESCRIPTION:Join Ponca State Park’s Naturalist team for an evening all about nature! Meet at the Resource Center for different activities throughout the night. Guests are encouraged to participate in as many activities as they would like! Activities will be at staggered times throughout the evening\, located around the Resource Center. \n  \nActivity Schedule:\n6-7:30 p.m. – Owls\, Bats\, and Salamanders: Learn about some of Nebraska’s creatures of the night through educational activities and a craft! \n7-8:30 p.m. – Campfire Treats: Stop by our campfire to make some classic campfire favorite treats and to learn about fire building and safety! \n8 p.m. – Nature Trivia: Come test your nature knowledge with fun family trivia. Participants can be in teams of 1-5 people and must sign up their team before 8 p.m. Register by stopping into the main office. \n9-10 p.m. – Frog Calling: Hop on over to our nearby pond to discover which native frogs we have in Nebraska and listen to the songs they sing! \n9-10:30 p.m. – Moth Lighting: Check out our moth lighting station to catch and identify live insects we have in the park! \n  \nPlease call the park office at 402-755-2284 for more information. No registration required! \n  \n*There are costs for the campfire treats ($1) and for owl pellets ($2); all of the other programs are free. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Ponca State Park for a guided\, beginner-friendly hike with the Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department on Monday\, July 27 at 10 a.m. \nA Ponca State Park Naturalist will lead the hike on Prairie Loop Trail and provide knowledge and history about native grasses\, wildflowers and Ponca State Park. This trail is approximately 1.15 miles in length and loops around a prairie restoration area. Water\, healthy snacks\, and insect repellent wipes will be provided. All ages are welcome! \nWe ask that visitors RSVP by calling 531-519-6360 so we can get a head count for snacks\, etc. \nPlease park at the Riverfront campground and meet at the Prairie Loop Trailhead located to the north of the campground. \nFree park entry for participants – Northeast Nebraska Public Health Department will be sponsoring daily park entry permits for this event only!

In-person training events are a great way to learn how to use your insect net\, collect data according to project methods\, practice identifying and photographing bees\, and meet fellow participants. \nRegistration is required to attend. REGISTER HERE \nThis event will take place outdoors. During the first hour of this event\, we will be walking along trails and through tallgrass prairie collecting bumble bees. During the second hour\, we will gather around tables to practice bee ID. Boots or close-toed shoes\, long pants\, sunscreen\, and tick prevention are recommended.

SUMMARY:FULL - Beginning Fly-Fishing and Fly-Tying at Ponca State Park
DESCRIPTION:Registration is full for this event. \nJoin us for a Beginners Fly-Fishing and Fly-Tying Class at Ponca State Park April 11. \nAnglers can learn the basics of fly fishing such as casting\, fly tying\, and basic knots\, intended to prepare them to catch trout and panfish this spring. The workshop\, which is open to new and experienced fly fishers\, will include all fishing equipment\, materials and tools needed. \nThere is a limit of 25 participants for the class and we would prefer that participants be of sufficient age to comfortably and confidently handle a 9 ft – 5 or 6 wt. fly rod.  This usually means that kids under about 12 years of age may have difficulty adequately handling a fly rod of that length and weight to move the line needed for casting.  If you have questions about this class for potential younger participants\, please contact us at Cornhuskerflyfishers@gmail.com or larry.pape@nebraska.gov. \nThe Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will host this workshop\, led and taught by members of the Cornhusker Fly Fishers Club. \nCost: $25 per person per event for lunch\, refreshments and facilities (limited to the first 25 registrants at each event). \nRegister Here  \nDirections on how to pay for the class will be given in a follow-up email from the Cornhusker Fly Fishing Club after registration on the Sign-Up Genius Website.

DESCRIPTION:Join Ponca State Park Naturalists on the Corps of Discovery Trail to watch the moon rise!  \nMeet at the Riverfront Playground for guided hikes (approximately one hour) along the beautiful wooded trails. These hikes will include some steep inclines and are considered moderately challenging. Hikers are encouraged to bring water and snacks. \nHandheld flashlights will be provided. Guests can bring their own headlamps or flashlights if they prefer. \nHike are scheduled for following dates and times: \nApril 1 at 7:30 p.m.\nMay 1 at 8:45 p.m.\nMay 31 at 9:45 p.m.\nJune 29 at 9:15 p.m.\nJuly 29 at 9 p.m.\nAugust 27 at 7:45 p.m.\nSeptember 26 at 6:45 p.m.\nOctober 25 at 5:45 p.m.\nHike may be cancelled due to weather or staffing. Common springtime sightings include Pintail\, teal\, snow geese\, white-fronted geese\, wood ducks\, mallards\, bald eagles\, and more. \nWith Ponca State Park’s location\, adjacent to the Missouri River\, it presents a significant flyway that serves as the feeding\, breeding and staging ground for migratory birds. \nGuided sunset waterfowl blind viewings are scheduled every Saturday\, March 7 thru March 28. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a monthly PIKE — a Naturalist-led group hike — at beautiful Ponca State Park! \nMeet at the West Shelter at 10 a.m. and enjoy the scenic views\, native wildlife\, and fellowship until 12:30 p.m. Along the way\, Naturalists will talk about the cultural and natural history of the park and the flora and fauna found in the area. The trail will end with a warm fire and fresh baked dessert in a dutch oven. A perfect mix of fresh air\, nature\, and a sweet treat! \nCost: $15 per person (card only) \nPRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED – Spots are limited and you must pre-register and pay by calling the park office at 402-755-2284. PIKEs are currently scheduled every second Saturday from Jan. 10 to Dec. 12\, 2026. \nA valid Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for entry and can be purchased at the park entrance or online.
