Participants will have the opportunity to try archery\, shotguns\, and handguns with guidance from certified instructors who cover safety\, aiming techniques\, and shooting fundamentals. \nWhether brand new or experienced\, women of all skill levels are invited to connect\, learn\, and have a memorable day on the range. \nAs an added bonus\, Platte River State Park staff will be serving lunch made in a cast iron Dutch oven.  A free will donation will be taken.  After lunch everyone is welcome attend a guided hike on the park’s wonderful trails. \n\nThis same experience is taking place at four other locations. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Platte River State Park April 15 and 16 for the annual East Outdoor Discovery Program (ODP)! The East ODP provides interactive programs so all youth\, novice or experienced\, have the opportunity to explore new outdoor activities and recreational possibilities and learn new outdoor skills. The program is designed to enhance students’ knowledge and ethical understanding of wildlife and the outdoors. \nIn addition\, it encourages health and wellness by promoting active outdoor lifestyles. It also engages students in fun\, interactive activities in the areas of wildlife and habitat management\, natural resource use\, Nebraska history\, shooting sports\, hunting skills\, aquatic knowledge and fishing skills\, and camping and recreation. Activities are designed to correlate with Nebraska state educational standards in the areas of science\, math\, history\, reading and writing. \nThe East ODP is FREE and open to 4th and 5th grade students. DESCRIPTION:Start the new year off with a First Day Hike or Ride at Platte River State Park! \nHike: Meet at 9 a.m. at the Walter Scott Lodge next to the red tower and join our Park Naturalists for a hike to Stone Creek Falls. Following the hike\, warm up by the fireplace with hot cocoa\, coffee and donut holes. \nBike: If you prefer biking over hiking\, join folks out on the mountain bike trails for a First Day Ride. We will be meeting at the amphitheater parking lot for a group ride at 9 a.m.\, led by an experienced Platte River trails enthusiast. Coffee\, hot chocolate and donut holes will be provided before the ride! \nPrepare for your winter hike or ride:  dress in layers\, wear a hat\, bring a warm/insulated water bottle and check the forecast. \nPrograms may be altered depending on the temperature and/or trail conditions. Please call ahead if there are weather advisories in the area. \nA 2026 Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for entry and can be purchased at the park entrance.

The Steel Plate Challenge is a speed shooting competition that consists of standardized stages with 5 steel targets\, ranging in size from 10″ round plates to 18×24″ rectangular plates from 7 yards – 35 yards away. Open to novice and experienced shooters ages 16 and up. \nREGISTRATION \nRegistration is required. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy shooting clays? Never tried 5-Stand? Join us for our Introduction to 5-Stand Clay Shooting at the Outdoor Heritage Education Complex at Platte River State Park! \nYou will learn all about the shooting sport 5-Stand\, which consists of shooting 25 shells from five different shooting stands. Each participant will partake in two rounds (25 shells each round). There are five clay throwers with one shooting clays from the left\, one from the right\, one incoming\, one outgoing\, and one traditionally placed in front. \nPrior shotgun and firearm knowledge is preferred but not required. See our Introduction to Trap class on July 10 if you would like more experience before trying 5-Stand. Personal firearms are allowed (12 gauge and 20 gauge only\, 7.5 or 8 shot\, no steel shot). If you bring your own firearm you must bring your own ammo. Equipment is provided for those that do not bring their own. \nPrice is $20 per person with own equipment or $35 per person with our equipment.
