DESCRIPTION:Join us at Platte River State Park’s Roger G. Sykes Outdoor Heritage Education Complex to learn all about archery on Saturday\, Sept. 12. \nBring family and friends and enjoy free activities including balloon archery\, 3D archery\, slingshots\, atlatl\, tomahawk throwing\, pellet gun shooting gallery\, campground games\, a naturalist tent with live reptiles\, marshmallow roasting and Dutch oven cooking! Food will be available while supplies last from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. \nWe will also have special guest Correy Hawk\, who you may recognize from the wilderness survival show “Alone”\,  demonstrating how to make handmade archery equipment. \nA valid state park vehicle permit is required for park entry and can be purchased at the entrance or online. This program is free and does not require registration. \n*This program coincides with Girl Scouts Love State Parks and scouts will be able to pick up a “Girl Scouts Love State Parks: Explore Nebraska” magazine while attending!

The shooting complex will be open to the public from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. \nJoin us at Platte River State Park on Sunday\, Aug. 9 for the NRA’s Youth Hunter Education Challenge (YHEC). This event provides a fun environment for kids 18 and under to improve their hunting\, marksmanship and safety skills. \nThrough its simulated hunting situations\, live fire exercises\, educational and responsibility events\, YHEC helps build upon skills learned in basic hunter education courses and encourages safer\, lifelong hunting habits. Participants will also meet with outdoor conservation groups to discover next-step mentor programs. \nAll youth participants will be required to pay a $15 fee to attend. A request for payment will be emailed one month prior. \nThe event will start promptly at 9 a.m. CT\, so please arrive by 8:30 a.m. to check in. A parent or guardian is required to attend with you\, along with a completed release form. All equipment and lunch will be provided. \nA valid Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for park entry.

DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, April 25 at Platte River State Park\, Heritage Education Complex for Ladies Day on the Range. \nGrab your girlfriends and spend the morning building confidence\, learning new skills\, and enjoying time together in a welcoming\, supportive environment. Participants will have the opportunity to try archery\, shotguns\, and handguns with guidance from certified instructors who cover safety\, aiming techniques\, and shooting fundamentals. \nWhether brand new or experienced\, women of all skill levels are invited to connect\, learn\, and have a memorable day on the range. \nAs an added bonus\, Platte River State Park staff will be serving lunch made in a cast iron Dutch oven.  A free will donation will be taken.  After lunch everyone is welcome attend a guided hike on the park’s wonderful trails. \n\nThis same experience is taking place at four other locations. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Platte River State Park April 15 and 16 for the annual East Outdoor Discovery Program (ODP)! The East ODP provides interactive programs so all youth\, novice or experienced\, have the opportunity to explore new outdoor activities and recreational possibilities and learn new outdoor skills. The program is designed to enhance students’ knowledge and ethical understanding of wildlife and the outdoors. \nIn addition\, it encourages health and wellness by promoting active outdoor lifestyles. It also engages students in fun\, interactive activities in the areas of wildlife and habitat management\, natural resource use\, Nebraska history\, shooting sports\, hunting skills\, aquatic knowledge and fishing skills\, and camping and recreation. Activities are designed to correlate with Nebraska state educational standards in the areas of science\, math\, history\, reading and writing. \nThe East ODP is FREE and open to 4th and 5th grade students. Following the hike\, warm up by the fireplace with hot cocoa\, coffee and donut holes. \nBike: If you prefer biking over hiking\, join folks out on the mountain bike trails for a First Day Ride. We will be meeting at the amphitheater parking lot for a group ride at 9 a.m.\, led by an experienced Platte River trails enthusiast. Coffee\, hot chocolate and donut holes will be provided before the ride! \nPrepare for your winter hike or ride:  dress in layers\, wear a hat\, bring a warm/insulated water bottle and check the forecast. \nPrograms may be altered depending on the temperature and/or trail conditions.
