Participants will have the opportunity to try archery\, shotguns\, and handguns with guidance from certified instructors who cover safety\, aiming techniques\, and shooting fundamentals. \nWhether brand new or experienced\, women of all skill levels are invited to connect\, learn\, and have a memorable day on the range. \nAs an added bonus\, Platte River State Park staff will be serving lunch made in a cast iron Dutch oven.  A free will donation will be taken.  After lunch everyone is welcome attend a guided hike on the park’s wonderful trails. \n\nThis same experience is taking place at four other locations. SUMMARY:East Outdoor Discovery Program
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Platte River State Park April 15 and 16 for the annual East Outdoor Discovery Program (ODP)! The East ODP provides interactive programs so all youth\, novice or experienced\, have the opportunity to explore new outdoor activities and recreational possibilities and learn new outdoor skills. The program is designed to enhance students’ knowledge and ethical understanding of wildlife and the outdoors. \nIn addition\, it encourages health and wellness by promoting active outdoor lifestyles. It also engages students in fun\, interactive activities in the areas of wildlife and habitat management\, natural resource use\, Nebraska history\, shooting sports\, hunting skills\, aquatic knowledge and fishing skills\, and camping and recreation. Activities are designed to correlate with Nebraska state educational standards in the areas of science\, math\, history\, reading and writing. \nThe East ODP is FREE and open to 4th and 5th grade students. SUMMARY:Becoming an Outdoors-Woman Learn to Hunt Safely Weekend
DESCRIPTION:A hunter education focused weekend designed to give women the chance to learn the basics of hunter safety and gain firsthand firearm and archery experience in a fun\, safe environment. Basic hunter education course material will be taught through simulated hunting situations\, live fire exercises\, education and responsibility activities. Workshops will be led by women who are experienced hunters and certified volunteer hunter education instructors. \nFemale participants ages 12 years through 18 are required to be accompanied by a participating adult the full weekend. \n$200 Fee includes cabin lodging at Ponca State Park and meals. Note that participants will share a cabin.  Assignments will be made by the event coordinator unless otherwise noted. (separate bedrooms). \nREGISTER HERE \nAll equipment\, including archery and firearms will be provided.\nHunter Education certificate will be given at the end of the weekend.

DESCRIPTION:Nebraska Becoming an Outdoors Woman (BOW) Weekend Workshop\, a program through the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission\, is the cornerstone event. It is held annually on the first weekend in October at Fort Robinson State Park. This three-day workshop includes sessions taught by expert instructors in a supportive environment conducive to learning\, making friends and having fun! Participants complete four sessions of their choosing. \nRegistration will open on April 1 for first time participants\, and any repeat participants who bring a new participants. The repeat participant must register on the same day as their invited new participant\, and list each other as roommates. Failure to register to follow this guideline will result in automatically deleting past participants. \nRepeat participants without a first-time participant guest may beginning registering on May 23\, 2025. \nRegistration is required: Please email Julia Plugge at julia.plugge@nebraska.gov for registration instructions.

DESCRIPTION:Take your kayaking experience to the next level at Smith Falls State Park on August 8\, 9 & 10.  Spend the weekend with The Becoming an Outdoors Woman kayaking the Niobrara River\, primitive tent camping near Nebraska’s highest waterfall\, exploring the landscape\, hiking trails\, preparing campfire meals\, learning survival skills\, and more. Open to 15 women\, 21 years and older.  Be ready for an intense weekend packed with skill development. \nWe will meet at Smith Falls on Friday\, August 8 at 1:00 PM for introductions\, camp set-up\, kayak safety lessons\, and a short kayak trip on the river before sun down. On Saturday\, August 9\, we will spend much of the day kayaking the river while taking in miles of Nebraska’s beautiful late summer scenery. We will end the day with dinner and a campfire conversation with women who work on the Niobrara river. August 10 we will wake up with the birds on a hike around the falls\, prepare a campfire breakfast\, and take group photo.\n\nApplications will be accepted until June 27. Those selected to participate will be notified by July 1.  Selected participants will be invoiced $175 with the payment due by July 8. SUMMARY:Becoming an Outdoors Woman - Summer Shooting Series - Shotgun
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a shotgun shooting workshop series for women\, taught by women on July 9\, 16\, 23\, and 30 at Platte River State Park from 6 – 8 pm. This class will lead you through the basics of shotgun safety\, handling and technique by shooting clay targets. At the conclusion of the four part workshop\, women will be able to identify parts of their shotgun\, how to properly clean it and how to efficiently break a clay target. Each week participants will improve their skills. \nFirearms and safety items will be provided. \nParticipants may bring their own shotguns and ammunition that matches their gun. \nRegistration is required: Please email Julia Plugge at julia.plugge@nebraska.gov for registration instructions.
