Following the hike\, warm up by the fireplace with hot cocoa\, coffee and donut holes. \nBike: If you prefer biking over hiking\, join folks out on the mountain bike trails for a First Day Ride. We will be meeting at the amphitheater parking lot for a group ride at 9 a.m.\, led by an experienced Platte River trails enthusiast. Coffee\, hot chocolate and donut holes will be provided before the ride! \nPrepare for your winter hike or ride:  dress in layers\, wear a hat\, bring a warm/insulated water bottle and check the forecast. \nPrograms may be altered depending on the temperature and/or trail conditions. DESCRIPTION:Ring in the new year in the great outdoors with a guided first day hike at Ash Hollow State Historical Park! Meet in the Overlook Trailhead parking lot at 10 a.m. on New Year’s Day for a hike. This moderate 1.2-mile hike starts off a bit steep and rocky\, then tapers off to a nice\, smooth hiking trail until you descend into the hollow again (strollers not recommended). \nFeel free to join us at the Visitor’s Center after the hike (around noon) for a potluck lunch — bring a soup or side to share. Tableware will be provided. \nIn 2026\, Nebraska Game and Parks will join the nation in celebrating 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This milestone is a unique opportunity to connect Nebraskans with the state’s rich natural\, cultural\, and outdoor heritage. To commemorate the occasion\, park staff will be handing out free 250th Anniversary First Day Hike stickers\, while supplies last! \nParticipants should dress for the weather and remember to bring snacks and water\, and binoculars\, if desired. DESCRIPTION:Want an opportunity to get your family outdoors over your winter break? Would you like to contribute to science? Join our Christmas Bird Count for Kids event at Schramm Education Center! Learn more about the birds that call Schramm home during the winter while participating in the longest running community science project in the country. During the event\, participants can choose to help count birds on a hike in the prairie or on a hike down to the Platte River. During the count\, we will be recording the number and type of birds we see. After we count\, we will join back up in the Schramm Classroom to tally our results and make bird crafts. We will be going out rain\, snow or sunshine\, so dress prepared for the weather! We’ll provide a limited number of binoculars\, so you’re encouraged to bring your own if you have them. If you choose to hike\, we will walk about a mile. Each year\, thousands of volunteers help conduct an early-winter bird census in over 20 countries in the Western Hemisphere between the dates of December 14th and January 5th. Reports from each of these counts are sent to the Audubon Society\, which compiles the data to help inform researchers about the status of bird populations. When the Christmas Bird Count was first started in the year 1900\, it was held annually on Christmas Day to promote conservation\, hence the name.\n\nThe cost to participate is $5 per person (ages 3 and under free). The cost includes the program and admission to the Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass Members participate free. A state park vehicle permit is not required in the Schramm Education Center parking lot.

SUMMARY:Becoming an Outdoors Woman - BOW with the Flow
DESCRIPTION:Take your kayaking experience to the next level at Smith Falls State Park on August 8\, 9 & 10.  Spend the weekend with The Becoming an Outdoors Woman kayaking the Niobrara River\, primitive tent camping near Nebraska’s highest waterfall\, exploring the landscape\, hiking trails\, preparing campfire meals\, learning survival skills\, and more. Open to 15 women\, 21 years and older.  Be ready for an intense weekend packed with skill development. \nWe will meet at Smith Falls on Friday\, August 8 at 1:00 PM for introductions\, camp set-up\, kayak safety lessons\, and a short kayak trip on the river before sun down. On Saturday\, August 9\, we will spend much of the day kayaking the river while taking in miles of Nebraska’s beautiful late summer scenery. We will end the day with dinner and a campfire conversation with women who work on the Niobrara river. August 10 we will wake up with the birds on a hike around the falls\, prepare a campfire breakfast\, and take group photo.\n\nApplications will be accepted until June 27. Those selected to participate will be notified by July 1.  Selected participants will be invoiced $175 with the payment due by July 8. SUMMARY:Know Your Invasives Day
DESCRIPTION:Join Nebraska Game and Parks and the Nebraska Invasive Species Council for the first annual Know Your Nebraska Invasives Day! \nInvasive species are plants\, animals\, or other organisms that live in water or on land that are found in an area that they are not from. They harm other wildlife from the area by using up their resources\, such as water\, food\, and habitat\, that they need to survive. Nebraska’s invasive species professionals will come together to teach you about Nebraska’s invasive species threats. You’ll learn about what species threaten Nebraska\, what their impacts are\, how to identify them\, and how to prevent their spread. This event includes workshops and activities designed for all ages and skill sets. \n  \nActivities include: \n10:30-11:45 a.m. – Aquatic plant identification and sampling workshop \nLearn how to identify some of Nebraska’s native and priority invasive plant species. You’ll see how Nebraska Game and Parks Commission surveys for and treats aquatic vegetation and actively collect data for an aquatic plant survey. \nBoat inspection simulations – Learn the techniques that NGPC’s boat inspectors use during boat inspections and get to practice doing an inspection yourself. Younger attendees can earn their “Junior Boat Inspector Certification” and badge. Prizes will be available for those who can successfully find a “zebra mussel”. \nGuided nature hike – Learn how to identify native and invasive vegetation and learn how to report invasive species on this beginner-level hike. \nKayaking – Equipment and guidance provided. Earn prizes by participating in an optional invasive species scavenger hunt in your kayak! \nShoreline fishing – Equipment and guidance provided; a fishing permit is required for participants 16 years or older. \nGyotaku – or fish printing art station. Create your own masterpiece by pressing an ink imprint of a rubber fish of your choice. \nInvasive species booths – Nebraska professionals can answer your questions about invasive species in Nebraska. You may even go home with some free swag AND MORE! \n  \nThis event is free to everyone and no registration is required! A valid state park entry permit is required to enter the park. SUMMARY:Homeschool Hikes at Schramm
DESCRIPTION:Homeschool Hikes is a monthly nature exploration program hosted by the Schramm Education Center geared towards homeschool families. Each month\, families can join a naturalist for a guided hike on the Schramm Park State Recreation Area hiking trails. During the program\, participants will ask questions\, draw\, observe\, and make discoveries in nature. Participants will have the opportunity to observe local phenomena\, plants\, and animals while exploring concepts such as patterns\, cause and effect\, and structure and function. \nThe cost to participate is $5 per person per program (adult and children are same price). This includes admission to the Schramm Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass members participate free. This program is recommended for ages 5 and up. Please register in advance so we can estimate attendance numbers: https://arcg.is/1HO45W0 . \nParticipants should dress in season-appropriate layers and wear closed-toed shoes that can get dirty. Hats and water bottles are recommended. The day of the program\, come to the Schramm Education Center and check in and pay at the front desk upon arrival. \nDates and topics for the first half of 2025 are as follows. Join us for Little Saplings\, Schramm Education Center’s early childhood nature discovery program. Little Saplings\, a monthly program designed for children ages 2 – 5 and their adult caregiver\, will bring nature themes to life for your child through story time\, sensory activities\, crafts\, and outdoor exploration! \nThe series is held on the first Wednesday of every month from 9 – 10 am and 10 – 11 am.  The cost to participate is $5 per child and $5 per adult per program and includes admission to the Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass members participate free. A State Park Vehicle Entry Permit is not required in the Schramm Education Center parking lot. Hats and water bottles are recommended.
