SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Want an opportunity to get your family outdoors over your winter break? Would you like to contribute to science? Join our Christmas Bird Count for Kids event at Schramm Education Center! Learn more about the birds that call Schramm home during the winter while participating in the longest running community science project in the country. During the event\, participants can choose to help count birds on a hike in the prairie or on a hike down to the Platte River. During the count\, we will be recording the number and type of birds we see. After we count\, we will join back up in the Schramm Classroom to tally our results and make bird crafts. We will be going out rain\, snow or sunshine\, so dress prepared for the weather! We’ll provide a limited number of binoculars\, so you’re encouraged to bring your own if you have them. If you choose to hike\, we will walk about a mile. The trails may be muddy or slick depending on weather conditions.\n\nChristmas Bird Count for Kids Schedule10:00-10:20: Christmas Bird Count Welcome\, Birding Basics\, and Introduction to Schramm Winter Birds in the Schramm Classroom10:20-11:30: Outdoor Bird Hikes11:30-12:00: Tally Results and Make Bird Crafts in the Schramm Classroom\n\nThis is the 126th year for the Audubon Christmas Bird Count. Each year\, thousands of volunteers help conduct an early-winter bird census in over 20 countries in the Western Hemisphere between the dates of December 14th and January 5th. Reports from each of these counts are sent to the Audubon Society\, which compiles the data to help inform researchers about the status of bird populations. When the Christmas Bird Count was first started in the year 1900\, it was held annually on Christmas Day to promote conservation\, hence the name.\n\nThe cost to participate is $5 per person (ages 3 and under free). The cost includes the program and admission to the Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass Members participate free. A state park vehicle permit is not required in the Schramm Education Center parking lot.

Fly tying is a great way to add to your tackle box\, express creativity and to have another excuse to go fishing. \nYou’ll work with the Cornhusker Fly-Fishers as you make a fly of your own to take home. Stop into the lobby of the Schramm Education Center anytime between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday\, Nov. 22 to give a fly a try! \nThis event is free and open to the public.

DESCRIPTION:Looking to get outdoors and volunteer? Schramm Park SRA is holding a volunteer opportunity to assist with oak woodland restoration efforts. Join NGPC staff as we walk the prairie to harvest seeds from native prairie plants. Seeds will be used to help with oak savanna restoration efforts. \nWear sturdy\, closed-toed shoes and long pants\, bring water\, and outdoor work gloves. Long sleeves are also recommended. All ages are welcome for this opportunity\, but anyone under the age of 18 must have an accompanying adult. \nRegister in advance if plan to attend so we can estimate head count for work materials: https://arcg.is/H1L5S2. \nMeet in the Schramm Education Center lobby. We’ll kick things off at 9 am with an introduction to the project and then hike to the prairie as a group to get started. SUMMARY:Homeschool Hikes
DESCRIPTION:Homeschool Hikes is a monthly nature exploration program hosted by the Schramm Education Center geared towards homeschool families. Each month\, families can join a naturalist for a guided hike on the Schramm Park State Recreation Area hiking trails. During the program\, participants will ask questions\, draw\, observe\, and make discoveries in nature. \nThe cost to participate is $5 per person per program (adult and children are same price). This includes admission to the Schramm Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass members participate free. This program is recommended for ages 5 and up. Please register here so we can estimate attendance numbers: https://arcg.is/1HO45W0. \nParticipants should dress in season-appropriate layers and wear closed-toed shoes that can get dirty. Hats and water bottles are recommended. Felt the keeled scales of a garter snake?\nSchramm Education Center is hosting its annual “Snakes of Nebraska” event on Saturday\, August 9th and Sunday\, August 10th! University of Nebraska-Lincoln herpetologist Dennis Ferraro and his lab will lead a live snake encounter featuring most of Nebraska’s 29 snake species. The live snake exhibits will be set up open-house style in the Schramm Education Center classroom and will be available on both Saturday and Sunday from 10 am – 4:30 pm.\n\nAt this free event\, you can see most of Nebraska’s 29 snake species\, meet UNL herpetologist Dennis Ferraro\, ask an expert your snake questions\, and even see venomous snakes up close. Join us to learn more about the amazing\, diverse snakes that call Nebraska home.\n\nThis is a free event. Regular Schramm Education Center admission fees will apply for anyone opting to visit the Education Center in addition to the event. A state park vehicle permit is not required in the Education Center parking lot. DESCRIPTION:Looking to get outdoors and volunteer? Schramm Park SRA is holding a volunteer opportunity to assist with oak woodland restoration efforts. Join NGPC staff as we work on trail maintenance\, brush piling\, and forest floor cleanup along the Hackberry and Red Cedar trails.\nWear sturdy\, closed-toed shoes and long pants\, bring water\, and outdoor work gloves. Long sleeves are also recommended. All ages are welcome for this opportunity\, but anyone under the age of 18 must have an accompanying adult.\nRegister in advance if plan to attend so we can estimate head count for work materials: https://arcg.is/H1L5S2.\nMeet at the park shelter next to Pond A. We’ll kick things off at 9 am with an introduction to the project and then hike up into the forest as a group to get started. Volunteers will need to sign a standard volunteer waiver upon arrival.
