DESCRIPTION:Join the Platte Valley Astronomical Observers for a free stargazing event beginning at dusk Oct. 18 at Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area. \nBring your family or friends\, camping chairs and appropriate clothing to the Boardman Creek Campground where you can learn about the night sky\, constellations and how wildlife respond to light at night. \nVisitors will get a constellation tour before using telescopes to explore the night sky. Merritt\, a designated International Dark Sky Park\, offers some of the darkest skies on earth. \nThe event is a collaboration among the Niobrara National Scenic River division of the National Park Service\, the Platte Valley Astronomical Observers and the state recreation area. \nThe event will be cancelled if it’s too cloudy or windy. \nA valid Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for park entry.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a Spooktacular Halloween event at Branched Oak State Recreation Area! \nSCHEDULE\n3:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. \nHead to the east side of the water tower to enjoy the apple sling\, Plinko\, the fish pond\, hula hoop\, ring toss\, bag toss\, zipline\, photo booth\, a pumpkin train\, basketball shoot\, photo booth and pumpkin carving. \nPumpkins will be for sale – $2 for a small\, $3 for a large. \n5 p.m. COSTUME CONTEST – prizes will be given to the top 2 in each age group (5 & under\, 6-10\, 11-16\, 17 & older). \n6:30 p.m. CAMPER DECORATING CONTEST – Decorate your campsite in preparation for the trick-or-treaters! Prizes will be given out to the top 6 places. \n6:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. CAMPGROUND TRICK-OR-TREATING – campsites/campers participating will display a trick-or-treat ghost on their campsite post. \n7 p.m. – 8:45 p.m. HAUNTED TRAIL RIDES – Take a hayrack ride through our haunted trail. You will have to sign up for a time slot when you purchase your tickets. Hayrack rides will go out every five minutes starting at 7 p.m. We will only sell 650 tickets. A daily pass or annual pass can be purchased at the gate\, or in advance online to avoid long lines. \nVisitor parking will be north of Middle Oak Creek Campground. All vehicle traffic in the campground will be closed for the safety of the trick-or-treaters between 6 p.m. and will not reopen until 9:30 p.m. No exceptions.

Proceeds go to one of several local cancer organizations. Those who register will receive a T-shirt\, as well as the option to buy a memorial pumpkin to honor a loved one. \nRegistration\nPlease register before Oct. 5 by calling 402-883-0014; registration is $25 for adults and $10 for kids and includes a T-shirt. When you register\, you may choose to purchase a memorial pumpkin for $20; this also includes a memorial balloon. \nCheck-in\nCheck-in for the walk starts at 9:30 a.m. Once the walk is over\, take time to check out the Jack-O’-Lantern Junk & Craft Market from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the food trucks from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. \nYou can also stay for the 2 p.m. pumpkin roll for all ages\, as well as Trick-or-Treat by the Buses from 3:30-5 p.m. and the Haunted Hollow Hayrack Rides from 7-9 p.m. \nA park entry permit is required and can be purchased at OutdoorNebraska.gov\, from permit vendors or upon entering the park.

Join NGPC staff as plant oak trees grown by volunteers along the hackberry trail.\nWear sturdy\, closed-toed shoes and long pants\, bring water\, and outdoor work gloves. Bring a small hand shovel if you have one. Long sleeves are also recommended. All ages are welcome for this opportunity\, but anyone under the age of 18 must have an accompanying adult.\nRegister in advance if plan to attend so we can estimate head count for work materials: https://arcg.is/H1L5S2.\nMeet at the park shelter next to Pond A. DESCRIPTION:Second Shots Pistol is designed to build on the handgun skills introduced in our FIRST SHOTS course. It’s also a good refresher for those who are years out of practice. \nStudents learn more about ammunition\, loading a magazine\, clearing a pistol and locking the slide back\, and handling malfunctions. Plus\, students get the practical experience of loading and shooting a variety of handgun styles and calibers in the range. \nIn the range\, the basics of stance\, sight picture\, and trigger control are emphasized to maximize success. After completing this class\, participants will be prepared to safely use the range on their own. \nOverall\, Second Shots Pistol teaches the basic knowledge\, skills\, and attitude necessary for owning and using a handgun safely. The small class size allows students to ask questions and receive individual advice. \nCourse covers: \n\nHandgun knowledge & review safe handling\nReview fundamentals of handgun shooting\nAmmunition knowledge\nActual range practice\nA variety of pistols\, ammo\, and targets provided\n\nPlease bring your own eye and ear protection. \nIf you have your own pistol\, you may bring it to use on the range (be sure to bring 50 rounds of ammunition). \nClosed-neck shirts and closed-toe shoes are recommended. \nFor students age 16 and over. DESCRIPTION:Homeschool Hikes is a monthly nature exploration program hosted by the Schramm Education Center geared towards homeschool families. Each month\, families can join a naturalist for a guided hike on the Schramm Park State Recreation Area hiking trails. During the program\, participants will ask questions\, draw\, observe\, and make discoveries in nature. \nThe cost to participate is $5 per person per program (adult and children are same price). This includes admission to the Schramm Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass members participate free. This program is recommended for ages 5 and up. Please register here so we can estimate attendance numbers: https://arcg.is/1HO45W0. \nParticipants should dress in season-appropriate layers and wear closed-toed shoes that can get dirty. Hats and water bottles are recommended. SUMMARY:Homeschool Hikes
DESCRIPTION:Homeschool Hikes is a monthly nature exploration program hosted by the Schramm Education Center geared towards homeschool families. Each month\, families can join a naturalist for a guided hike on the Schramm Park State Recreation Area hiking trails. During the program\, participants will ask questions\, draw\, observe\, and make discoveries in nature. \nThe cost to participate is $5 per person per program (adult and children are same price). This includes admission to the Schramm Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass members participate free. This program is recommended for ages 5 and up. Please register here so we can estimate attendance numbers: https://arcg.is/1HO45W0. \nParticipants should dress in season-appropriate layers and wear closed-toed shoes that can get dirty. Hats and water bottles are recommended. The day of the program\, come to the Schramm Education Center and check in and pay at the front desk upon arrival. \nDates and topics for the second half of 2025 are as follows.
