DESCRIPTION:Second Shots Pistol is designed to build on the handgun skills introduced in our FIRST SHOTS course. It’s also a good refresher for those who are years out of practice. \nStudents learn more about ammunition\, loading a magazine\, clearing a pistol and locking the slide back\, and handling malfunctions. Plus\, students get the practical experience of loading and shooting a variety of handgun styles and calibers in the range. \nIn the range\, the basics of stance\, sight picture\, and trigger control are emphasized to maximize success. After completing this class\, participants will be prepared to safely use the range on their own. \nOverall\, Second Shots Pistol teaches the basic knowledge\, skills\, and attitude necessary for owning and using a handgun safely. The small class size allows students to ask questions and receive individual advice. \nCourse covers: \n\nHandgun knowledge & review safe handling\nReview fundamentals of handgun shooting\nAmmunition knowledge\nActual range practice\nA variety of pistols\, ammo\, and targets provided\n\nPlease bring your own eye and ear protection. \nIf you have your own pistol\, you may bring it to use on the range (be sure to bring 50 rounds of ammunition). \nClosed-neck shirts and closed-toe shoes are recommended. \nFor students age 16 and over. DESCRIPTION:Registration for the Outdoor Education Center’s Umbrella Match for handguns on December 16 & 20\, 2025. This match will be offered on two dates – attend on whichever day works best for your schedule (Tuesday or Saturday). \nThis is a three-match series open to pistols from all manufacturers. The course of fire will be the same as the GSSF Indoor League Series. \nThis is the first match for this series. Competitors must shoot in two out of the three available matches (September\, October\, November) to be eligible for prizes. January 13 & 17\, and February 24 & 28 are the scheduled dates for the second and third matches. \nCompetitors may shoot up to 6 divisions – Centerfire Stock\, Centerfire Unlimited\, Centerfire Single Stack/Revolver\, Rimfire Stock\, Rimfire Unlimited\, and Rimfire Revolver. For division descriptions\, see below. First entry is $20\, second is $10\, and third through sixth (each) is $5. Secondary entries in the same division are $5 each and only count as additional chances in the prize drawings. \nThis match will follow GSSF’s ‘Original’ course of fire for all Stock and Unlimited divisions and ‘Option E’ for Single Stack/Revolver divisions. Come join the fun; learn bird identification tips and see some uncommon species. We’ll kick off day with our Early Morning Christmas Bird Count. A free soup lunch will be served at noon for those in attendance. The day with conclude with an Afternoon Christmas Bird Count.\nPonca State Park’s Christmas Bird Count is part of a nationwide Christmas Bird Count conducted by the National Audubon Society\, where data collected is utilized by conservationists and researchers around the world. \nPlease dress for the weather; and bring a water bottle\, binoculars\, and bird book. If you do not have binoculars or a bird book\, Ponca State Park will loan them to you. \nA valid state park vehicle permit is required for park entry.

DESCRIPTION:Enjoy the sounds of the forest on a crisp winter night and join Schramm naturalists to hike the forest after nightfall.\n\nMeet at the pond trailhead and bring a flashlight or head lamp. We will hike for about an hour and will walk about 2 miles\, from the Pond Trailhead along the Hackberry Trail to the full Red Cedar Trail loop. There are stairs at the trailhead and one spot along the hike where there will be an elevation change and we will walk up a hill.\nThis is a free program\, but a State Park Vehicle Entry Permit is required. If you do not already have one\, a daily park permit can be purchased at the self-service box at the park entrance that night with exact cash or check ($7 for Nebraska licensed vehicles; $14 for non-Nebraska licensed vehicles).

Learn about native plants and pollinators from an NGPC horticulture team! \nJuly 8 – Turtles of Nebraska: Learn about the species of turtles found in Nebraska and their adaptations then walk down to Owen Marina to look for turtles! \nAugust 12 – Fly-tying for Beginners: Join us to learn more about the art of fly-tying from members of the Cornhusker Fly Fishing group. \nSeptember 9 – Monarch Butterfly Tagging: September is a great month for observing butterflies. Learn the process of tagging monarchs around the pollinator garden. \nOctober 14 – Dutch Oven Cooking: Gather around the fire as we make White Chicken Chili\, Venison Chili\, and Apple Cider Cinnamon Rolls.
