DESCRIPTION:Travel 200 years back in time and experience history on the Great Plains at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park! \nOngoing demonstrations featuring military and civilian life of the 1820s will occur throughout the park. Reenactors will portray fur traders\, coopers\, blacksmiths\, carpenters\, tinsmiths\, weavers and other period trades outside of the fort walls. Other ongoing activities will include carpentry/log hewing at the southeast barrack. The hand-labeled prints carefully name each of the men\, but the girl is never identified. As The Girl in the Middle goes in search of her\, it draws readers deeper into the entangled lives of the photographer and his subjects. \n  \nAbout the author: \nMartha Sandweiss is a professor emerita of history at Princeton University\, where she is founding director of the Princeton & Slavery Project. She is the award-winning author of many books\, including  Passing Strange: A Gilded Age Tale of Love and Deception across the Color Line and Print the Legend: Photography and the American West. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Attend all three parts of the day\, or pick and choose what you’d like to participate in! \nThe whole day is a fundraising event to support the improvement and investment in the Valentine Trailhead area for trail users and the community. \nSchedule: \nTrail Ride: 9 a.m.\nThe day will kick-off with a bike ride along the trail starting in Valentine down to Arabia Ranch. There are ride distances to choose from\, too! Either ride a 32-miles with Arabia Ranch as your turnaround point\, or ride 16-miles and end your ride at Arabia Ranch. Join Nebraska Game and Parks outdoor educators for a night of service to our local waters and wildlife while kayaking.\n\nWe will be providing trash bags and gloves for all those interested in helping to clean up trash while on the water. We will meet at the boat ramp and dock area on the West side of the lake down Turkey Road. On Google maps it is identified as Walnut Creek Recreation Area.\n\nSafety and basic instruction will be given at the beginning of the event. You will be emailed prior to the event to confirm your registration and any needed details.\n\nThis event is free and we welcome you to either borrow a kayak or bring your own! Explore Archery is a recommended prerequisite but not required. \nThis Center Shot Archery Academy* course includes achievement awards\, skill training\, and games with a focus on guiding each student in improvement at their own pace. SUMMARY:Labor Day at Fort Kearny
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Labor Day weekend by joining us for Living History at Fort Kearny State Historical Park! \nSchedule \nThere will be a cannon firing at 2 p.m. on Saturday\, Sunday and Monday with a special night firing on Sunday at 8 p.m. \nLiving history volunteers’ camp will take place on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and Monday at from 9 to 2 p.m. \nReenactors will be at the park to discuss life as a soldier during the fort’s early days. Visitors to the park will be able to explore exhibits and the reconstructed buildings\, including the stockade\, grounds\, powder magazine and blacksmith/carpenter shop. \nBe sure to check out special living history activities and demonstrations on Sunday evening at 7 p.m. \nA valid Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for park entry. \n
