SUMMARY:Homeschool Hikes at Schramm
DESCRIPTION:Homeschool Hikes is a monthly nature exploration program hosted by the Schramm Education Center geared towards homeschool families. Each month\, families can join a naturalist for a guided hike on the Schramm Park State Recreation Area hiking trails. During the program\, participants will ask questions\, draw\, observe\, and make discoveries in nature. Participants will have the opportunity to observe local phenomena\, plants\, and animals while exploring concepts such as patterns\, cause and effect\, and structure and function. \nThe cost to participate is $5 per person per program (adult and children are same price). This includes admission to the Schramm Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass members participate free. This program is recommended for ages 5 and up. Please register in advance so we can estimate attendance numbers: https://arcg.is/1HO45W0 . \nParticipants should dress in season-appropriate layers and wear closed-toed shoes that can get dirty. Hats and water bottles are recommended. The day of the program\, come to the Schramm Education Center and check in and pay at the front desk upon arrival. \nDates and topics for the first half of 2026 are as follows. SUMMARY:Cutting Down Cedar Trees to Save the Forest - Zoom Webinar
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Nebraska Invasive Species Awareness Week\, invasive species professionals will be hosting Zoom webinars throughout the week! Join us on Tuesday\, May 26 at 1 p.m. CT to learn about invasive eastern red cedar trees and their environmental and ecological impacts. \nPre-registration required:  REGISTER HERE \nAbout the program: Schramm Park State Recreation Area in eastern Nebraska is a popular destination for hikers\, families\, and wildlife enthusiasts. The park features over 300 acres of oak woodlands\, riparian forest\, and eastern tallgrass prairie habitat. In recent years\, Schramm was designated a demonstration site for habitat conservation in the Nebraska State Wildlife Action Plan\, resulting in the creation of a habitat management plan for the park. In this plan\, eastern red cedar encroachment was identified as a major problem for the health of the park’s oak woodlands. \nEastern red cedar trees are a native species with invasive tendencies that can quickly take over fire-adapted ecosystems in the absence of periodic fire. In 2024\, with the help of state and federal funding\, contractors were hired to remove over 98 acres of red cedar trees as the first step in restoring our oak woodlands. In this presentation\, learn about the ongoing woodland restoration project at Schramm and the science behind it\, as well as strategies that we’ve used to educate and engage the public in our restoration efforts. \nAbout the presenter: Jen Ruyle is an Outdoor Education Specialist for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission based at Schramm Park State Recreation Area. Jen went to school to study biology\, completed an undergraduate research project on dung beetles\, and then went on to obtain a master’s in entomology. After many outreach presentations\, educational events\, and classroom visits to teach about insects\, she realized her true passion was environmental education. She has been working as an educator for 10 years. In her free time\, she is an avid gardener and is slowly converting her family’s acreage to native plants and trees. \nThere will be opportunity for a Q&A with Jen after the presentation.

SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Want an opportunity to get your family outdoors over your winter break? Would you like to contribute to science? Join our Christmas Bird Count for Kids event at Schramm Education Center! Learn more about the birds that call Schramm home during the winter while participating in the longest running community science project in the country. During the event\, participants can choose to help count birds on a hike in the prairie or on a hike down to the Platte River. During the count\, we will be recording the number and type of birds we see. After we count\, we will join back up in the Schramm Classroom to tally our results and make bird crafts. We will be going out rain\, snow or sunshine\, so dress prepared for the weather! We’ll provide a limited number of binoculars\, so you’re encouraged to bring your own if you have them. If you choose to hike\, we will walk about a mile. The trails may be muddy or slick depending on weather conditions.\n\nChristmas Bird Count for Kids Schedule10:00-10:20: Christmas Bird Count Welcome\, Birding Basics\, and Introduction to Schramm Winter Birds in the Schramm Classroom10:20-11:30: Outdoor Bird Hikes11:30-12:00: Tally Results and Make Bird Crafts in the Schramm Classroom\n\nThis is the 127th year for the Audubon Christmas Bird Count. Each year\, thousands of volunteers help conduct an early-winter bird census in over 20 countries in the Western Hemisphere between the dates of December 14th and January 5th. Reports from each of these counts are sent to the Audubon Society\, which compiles the data to help inform researchers about the status of bird populations. When the Christmas Bird Count was first started in the year 1900\, it was held annually on Christmas Day to promote conservation\, hence the name.\n\nThe cost to participate is $5 per person (ages 3 and under free). The cost includes the program and admission to the Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass Members participate free. A state park vehicle permit is not required in the Schramm Education Center parking lot.
