DESCRIPTION:Camp counselors are a key part of making the Outdoor Education Center’s summer programs fun and memorable. This exciting new camp will provide specialty training for our camp crew for the summer season! \nLearn how to instruct a variety of outdoor activities: target archery\, bowfishing\, slingshot\, tomahawk\, atlatl\, hiking\, photography\, survival\, knot tying\, outdoor cooking\, marksmanship\, and more! DESCRIPTION:Join Nebraska Game and Parks and the Nebraska Invasive Species Council for the first annual Know Your Nebraska Invasives Day! \nInvasive species are plants\, animals\, or other organisms that live in water or on land that are found in an area that they are not from. They harm other wildlife from the area by using up their resources\, such as water\, food\, and habitat\, that they need to survive. Nebraska’s invasive species professionals will come together to teach you about Nebraska’s invasive species threats. You’ll learn about what species threaten Nebraska\, what their impacts are\, how to identify them\, and how to prevent their spread. This event includes workshops and activities designed for all ages and skill sets. \n  \nActivities include: \n10:30-11:45 a.m. – Aquatic plant identification and sampling workshop \nLearn how to identify some of Nebraska’s native and priority invasive plant species. You’ll see how Nebraska Game and Parks Commission surveys for and treats aquatic vegetation and actively collect data for an aquatic plant survey. \nBoat inspection simulations – Learn the techniques that NGPC’s boat inspectors use during boat inspections and get to practice doing an inspection yourself. Younger attendees can earn their “Junior Boat Inspector Certification” and badge. Prizes will be available for those who can successfully find a “zebra mussel”. \nGuided nature hike – Learn how to identify native and invasive vegetation and learn how to report invasive species on this beginner-level hike. \nKayaking – Equipment and guidance provided. Earn prizes by participating in an optional invasive species scavenger hunt in your kayak! \nShoreline fishing – Equipment and guidance provided; a fishing permit is required for participants 16 years or older. \nGyotaku – or fish printing art station. Create your own masterpiece by pressing an ink imprint of a rubber fish of your choice. \nInvasive species booths – Nebraska professionals can answer your questions about invasive species in Nebraska. You may even go home with some free swag AND MORE! \n  \nThis event is free to everyone and no registration is required! A valid state park entry permit is required to enter the park. When thinking of aquatic invasive species thoughts often arise of critters such as jumping carp\, zebra mussels\, or crawling crayfish. However\, the most widespread AIS issue in Nebraska is not these species but actually invasive aquatic plants. Come listen to Kristopher Stahr\, NGPC AIS Program Manager (often called the weed doctor)\, describe the impact these species are having in Nebraska and the efforts being undertaken to control these pesky plants in our waters. \nPresenter: Kristopher Stahr\, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission \nKristopher is the NGPC’S AIS Manager since the program was created in 2020. He first began working with aquatic invasive species as a temporary in Iowa in 2009. SUMMARY:Summer Field Hunter Animal League
DESCRIPTION:The Turpin Outdoor Education Center will be hosting a National Field Archery Association (NFAA) Field Hunter Animal (FHA) League at our beautiful outdoor Field Course this summer! \nThe FHA round simulates real-world conditions and challenges archers with varied distances\, target sizes\, and terrain. Each week we will alternate between the Field\, Hunter or Animal round that consists of 14 different targets each. If you haven’t been to our Field course before\, now is a great chance to explore it with other experienced archers! \nThe league will meet at the outdoor shooting tower at 6pm on Thursday evenings for 10 weeks\, starting May 15. From there groups will be determined and set to start at a specific target within the field course. \nIf you can’t make it to league night\, archers can drop-in during the center’s open hours\, collect your scorecard and shoot the round outside on the field course Friday through Tuesday\, sunrise to sunset. Targets will be rotated each week. The final date to turn in scorecards will be July 29. \nParticipants who are new to field archery should join us on Thursday evenings to enjoy shooting with the group\, to learn the ropes\, and gain valuable experience shooting with seasoned archers! \nIndividual prizes will be awarded by drawing ‘tickets’. Tickets are earned by attendance\, top score each week\, most overall improved\, and top overall score. The number of prizes awarded will depend on the number of entries (1 prize per 5 entries). Weekly top score tickets will be awarded for each age class/bow style represented. \nFor participants without personal equipment you may opt to use a rental bow on the Thursday League Nights (or if they are taking a class\, their class bow). \nLeague is open to anyone 8 and up. Previous archery experience required. \nSign up for all 10 weeks at once for $80 (20% discount for annual pass holders)\, or pay at the door for $10 per attendance. \nAGE CLASSES\nEach target station will have distance markers indicating where archers in different classes should shoot. The age classes are:\n• Cub (Under 12)\n• Youth (12-14)\n• Young Adult (15-17)\n• Adult (18+)\nAll archers will shoot from their specific yardage marker that will be marked and labeled at each target on the field course. All the distances are already measured\, marked and verified! \nFor our league – Longbow\, Traditional\, Barebow and Barebow Recurve shoot the same distances as Youth. Olympic Recurve shoots the distances as assigned for the age class they are registered in. \nThe maximum distances for each age division is as follows:\n• Cubs: 30 yards\n• Youth: 50 yards\n• Young Adult and Adult: 80 yards \nFIELD ROUND\nScoring is 5 for the spot\, 4 for the two white rings\, and 3 for the outside black rings. We absolutely need to suppress their growth and spread and limit the damage they cause. However\, Nebraska also has a lot of other plants that we call ‘weeds’ or ‘weedy’ that really aren’t harmful at all. Many of them are just opportunists who can appear quicky and in big numbers when nearby plant competition is reduced by grazing\, flooding\, fire\, or other forces. Those opportunists provide great pollinator and wildlife value or\, at worst\, just come and go without really causing any lasting damage to anyone or anything. Let’s talk about how to tell the difference and why it matters. \nPresenter: Chris Helzer\, The Nature Conservancy \nChris Helzer is the Nebraska Director of Science and Stewardship for The Nature Conservancy. He conducts research on grasslands\, helps develop and test land management strategies\, supervises the stewardship of the Conservancy’s staffed preserves in Nebraska\, and spends lot of time blathering on about how beautiful and valuable prairies are. See our daily event schedule for ongoing activities from Friday to Sunday below. \n\n\n\nFriday\, May 23\nLocation: River Bluff Room in the Resource & Education Center \n5 p.m. – Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center’s Raptor Program — Join a Naturalist with Woodbury County Conservation for a raptor program and an opportunity to meet the ambassador owls from the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center. Harlan and Lucia are permanent residents who were injured in the wild and not able to be released.  \nCost: $2/person \n7:15 p.m. – Owl Pellets — Learn how owls swallow their prey whole and then regurgitate the undigestible material; the owl pellet. Participants will be given an owl pellet to investigate\, dissect\, and ID. \nCost: $3/kit; Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center 8 a.m.–7 p.m. \n\n\n\nSaturday\, May 24\n8:30 a.m. – Birds & Binoculars — Join a naturalist to learn how to use binoculars for bird viewing\, borrow a pair from us or bring your own. We’ll take a short walk to frequently visited bird feeders and popular perching spots for a chance to see the many species that call Ponca State Park home. This activity is free. Meet in the Display Wing of the Resource and Education Center. \n10 a.m. – Gonna Find Me A Bluebird — Learn about the Bluebirds that spend the summer at Ponca State Park. Discuss bluebird life\, history\, and habitat needs. Inspect bluebird boxes\, observe nests\, eggs\, and both adult and young birds. Receive plans to build your own bluebird boxes and discuss suggestions on best locations to install boxes. This activity is free. Meet at the Resource & Education Center. \n11:30 a.m. – Build Your Own Birdfeeder — Learn about the birds that live around Ponca State Park! Create a pinecone and peanut butter feeder to take back to your cabin or home. \nCost: $2/kit; Pre-register and pay at the Resource & Education Center 8 a.m.–11:20 a.m. Meet behind the Resource & Education Center. \n1:30pm Build Your Own Wren House — House Wrens are a small\, very active and inquisitive bird with a rich bubbling song. Construct a wren house to take home and place in your own yard. They are comfortable nesting near human dwellings. Wood is precut and some of the construction is already started. Necessary tools and other required items are provided. Children will need adult supervision to complete construction using basic hand tools. Meet behind the Resource and Education Center.\n Cost: $10/kit; Pre-register and pay at the Resource & Education Center 8 a.m.–1 p.m. Only supplies for 8 wren houses left! \n3 p.m. – Birds\, Beaks\, and Feathers — Join a naturalist as we examine birds\, beaks\, and feathers of several study specimens and learn about the unique adaptations of different birds that you can find in or around Ponca State Park. This activity is free. Meet in the Display Wing of the Resource and Education Center. \n\n\n\nSunday\, May 25\n9 a.m. – Birding at the Backwaters — Join us for a morning of birding! We will meet at the Backwater Trail located near the Riverfront Campground for a short walk and use binoculars to observe different bird species along the Missouri River Backwaters. Borrow a pair of binoculars or bring your own. This activity is free.All levels of experience with birding and binoculars are welcome. Dress for the weather and meet at the Backwater Trail.

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Saturday\, May 24\, for the 11th annual Migratory Bird Day: All About Turkey Vultures at Indian Cave State Park! \nSchedule: \n5 p.m.: Guided bird outing – “Birding for everybody and every body!” \nThis free birding outing is accessible and open to everyone\, including beginner birders and families with small children. Join a guided bird outing through the new trail near the pollinator gardens. Meet at the museum gazebo.  \nThe birding trail is about 1 ⁄ 4 mile in a loop around the pollinator gardens. The trail is a mowed grass trail with a slight slope. The trail is well shaded by tree cover. The guided outing will take about 45 minutes.  \n4-6 p.m.: Activities for all ages\, make n’ take bird crafts and games \n6-7:30 p.m.: Fish fry – $12/Adults\, $6/Kids meal (3 and under free) \n9 p.m.: Glow-in-the-dark egg hunt for toddlers through age 11 (please bring your own baskets) \nA 2025 Nebraska state park vehicle permit required for entry.
