Help us collect valuable data about these at-risk species in the state. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free field training to gain hands-on experience with the Nebraska Bumble Bee Atlas! The Atlas is a community science project aiming to track and conserve bumble bees in the state. Anyone is welcome to join the Atlas\, no experience is needed\, just a drive to help conserve pollinators! \nDuring this event\, participants will gain hands-on experience with the Atlas protocol\, including netting\, chilling\, and photographing bees\, as well as data recording/entry. The Atlas uses non-lethal survey methods\, so no bees are harmed during the project. The training will take place outside\, so please bring water\, closed-toed shoes\, and sun protection. The Atlas is a collaboration between Xerces Society and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. \nRegistration is required. REGISTER HERE \nWe will meet at the picnic tables outside of the Nature Center. DESCRIPTION:Take a step back in time this June and explore Rock Creek Station –  a place where road ranches served pioneers along the Oregon-California Trail\, Pony Express riders carried mail across the West\, and Wild Bill Hickok began a legendary career as gunfighter! \nThe Visitor Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the event. Scheduled events include Pony Express demonstrations and a narration of the Hickok-McCandles incident at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Living history demonstrations will be held on the historic ranches throughout the day during the event. \nA free-will donation lunch of pulled pork sandwiches will be hosted by the Friends of Rock Creek Station from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. \nSaturday evening \, visitors can also enjoy a buffalo stew cookout and musical entertainment starting at 7 p.m. at the historic West Ranche site. Advanced cookout tickets will be on sale at the park’s Visitor Center and at the Fairbury Chamber of Commerce office. Adults $9/Children $6 (13 and under). \nThe musical entertainment begins after the buffalo stew cookout\, and the presentation is free and open to the public. David Marsh from the Humanities Nebraska Speaker’s Bureau will entertain audiences with his Music of the Plains program\, where he will share stories and sing songs that arose out of the common experience of life on the plains during the settlement era. SUMMARY:Summer Field Hunter Animal League
DESCRIPTION:The Turpin Outdoor Education Center will be hosting a National Field Archery Association (NFAA) Field Hunter Animal (FHA) League at our beautiful outdoor Field Course this summer! \nThe FHA round simulates real-world conditions and challenges archers with varied distances\, target sizes\, and terrain. Each week we will alternate between the Field\, Hunter or Animal round that consists of 14 different targets each. If you haven’t been to our Field course before\, now is a great chance to explore it with other experienced archers! \nThe league will meet at the outdoor shooting tower at 6pm on Thursday evenings for 10 weeks\, starting May 15. From there groups will be determined and set to start at a specific target within the field course. \nIf you can’t make it to league night\, archers can drop-in during the center’s open hours\, collect your scorecard and shoot the round outside on the field course Friday through Tuesday\, sunrise to sunset. Targets will be rotated each week. The final date to turn in scorecards will be July 29. \nParticipants who are new to field archery should join us on Thursday evenings to enjoy shooting with the group\, to learn the ropes\, and gain valuable experience shooting with seasoned archers! \nIndividual prizes will be awarded by drawing ‘tickets’. Tickets are earned by attendance\, top score each week\, most overall improved\, and top overall score. The number of prizes awarded will depend on the number of entries (1 prize per 5 entries). Weekly top score tickets will be awarded for each age class/bow style represented. \nFor participants without personal equipment you may opt to use a rental bow on the Thursday League Nights (or if they are taking a class\, their class bow). \nLeague is open to anyone 8 and up. Previous archery experience required. \nSign up for all 10 weeks at once for $80 (20% discount for annual pass holders)\, or pay at the door for $10 per attendance. \nAGE CLASSES\nEach target station will have distance markers indicating where archers in different classes should shoot. The age classes are:\n• Cub (Under 12)\n• Youth (12-14)\n• Young Adult (15-17)\n• Adult (18+)\nAll archers will shoot from their specific yardage marker that will be marked and labeled at each target on the field course. All the distances are already measured\, marked and verified! \nFor our league – Longbow\, Traditional\, Barebow and Barebow Recurve shoot the same distances as Youth. Olympic Recurve shoots the distances as assigned for the age class they are registered in. \nThe maximum distances for each age division is as follows:\n• Cubs: 30 yards\n• Youth: 50 yards\n• Young Adult and Adult: 80 yards \nFIELD ROUND\nScoring is 5 for the spot\, 4 for the two white rings\, and 3 for the outside black rings. The X is counted as 5 points and used as a tiebreaker. \nEach archer shall shoot 4 arrows at each of the 14-target layouts in a unit. In 10 cases this shall mean shooting the four arrows from a single stake at a single target. Mahoney State Park’s newly renovated James Family Conservatory and Nature Center. \nThis is a program for birders of all ages and levels. SUMMARY:Women's Archery Happy Hour - June
DESCRIPTION:Mondays in June\, you are invited to join in an evening of archery FOR women\, taught by women. \nChoose from a four-week intro class or ‘next-level’ practice and coaching section\, depending on your comfort with the material. \nThe intro section features a lesson and time on the archery range practicing with a bow each week. Class goes from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. \nThe ‘next-level’ practice and coaching section is a time for women to hone their archery skills and receive individual coaching. Coaching will be available from 5-6:30 pm and has a flexible arrival time. \nThe sessions will be taught at an indoor archery facility and space is limited. \n$40/participant\, ages 16+ \nAll equipment is provided\, but if you have your own you are welcome to bring it. \nREGISTER NOW

SUMMARY:Go Explore: Counselor Training Week 1
DESCRIPTION:Camp counselors are a key part of making the Outdoor Education Center’s summer programs fun and memorable. This exciting new camp will provide specialty training for our camp crew for the summer season! \nLearn how to instruct a variety of outdoor activities: target archery\, bowfishing\, slingshot\, tomahawk\, atlatl\, hiking\, photography\, survival\, knot tying\, outdoor cooking\, marksmanship\, and more! Most of the instructional training will be done through hands-on activities. \nCrew preparation will also cover conservation knowledge\, schedules\, safety procedures and training\, communication\, and crew responsibilities. \nThis year there will be two weeks of counselor training. Both weeks will have instruction in the morning and practical experience in the afternoon with Bright Lights Camp. Each week will cover different topics and activities. SUMMARY:Living History Weekend at Fort Atkinson
DESCRIPTION:Travel 200 years back in time and experience history on the Great Plains at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park! \nLiving History events occur from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. the first weekend of each month between May and October. Ongoing demonstrations featuring military and civilian life of the 1820s will occur throughout the park. Reenactors portray fur traders\, coopers\, blacksmiths\, carpenters\, tinsmiths\, weavers and other period trades. There will also be potato planting demonstrations. SUMMARY:Monarch & Regal Fritillary Butterfly Survey Training
DESCRIPTION:Are you interested becoming a community scientist and helping conserve Nebraska’s rare\, at-risk butterflies? If so\, please join Nebraska Game and Parks Commission wildlife biologists on Saturday\, May 31 at the Schramm Education Center to learn how to participate in the monarch and regal fritillary community science project. Help us collect valuable data about these at-risk species in the state. \nThe training will open with a presentation at 1 p.m.\, followed by a mock survey. During this extensive training\, you will learn how to walk an assigned transect\, count butterflies\, and assess habitat features. Bring water\, snacks\, notebook\, and a hat for the brief field portion. \nREGISTER HERE \nThis event is free and open to the public. \n
