DESCRIPTION:A birding activity that is accessible and inclusive! Rock Creek Station welcomes birders of all abilities\, including beginner birders and families with small children\, to a guided bird-watching tour hosted by Nebraska Birdability captain\, Cassandra Dean.  \nThe birding trail is about 1 mile – ½ mile in and ½ mile out – to and from the Visitor Center. The trail is a mowed grass trail with a slight slope. Picnic table seating will be available about ¼ mile from the Visitor Center. The guided outing will take about 1 hour and will be limited to the first 20 people. Birding may also be done from the Visitor Center lobby by viewing birds at the feeding station through the large picture windows. \nThings to bring: Water and weather appropriate clothing for being outdoors. We have binoculars available to use or bring your own! Paved parking and restrooms are available at the Visitor Center. SUMMARY:Summer Field Hunter Animal League
DESCRIPTION:The Turpin Outdoor Education Center will be hosting a National Field Archery Association (NFAA) Field Hunter Animal (FHA) League at our beautiful outdoor Field Course this summer! \nThe FHA round simulates real-world conditions and challenges archers with varied distances\, target sizes\, and terrain. Each week we will alternate between the Field\, Hunter or Animal round that consists of 14 different targets each. If you haven’t been to our Field course before\, now is a great chance to explore it with other experienced archers! \nThe league will meet at the outdoor shooting tower at 6pm on Thursday evenings for 10 weeks\, starting May 15. From there groups will be determined and set to start at a specific target within the field course. \nIf you can’t make it to league night\, archers can drop-in during the center’s open hours\, collect your scorecard and shoot the round outside on the field course Friday through Tuesday\, sunrise to sunset. Targets will be rotated each week. The final date to turn in scorecards will be July 29. \nParticipants who are new to field archery should join us on Thursday evenings to enjoy shooting with the group\, to learn the ropes\, and gain valuable experience shooting with seasoned archers! \nIndividual prizes will be awarded by drawing ‘tickets’. Tickets are earned by attendance\, top score each week\, most overall improved\, and top overall score. The number of prizes awarded will depend on the number of entries (1 prize per 5 entries). Weekly top score tickets will be awarded for each age class/bow style represented. \nFor participants without personal equipment you may opt to use a rental bow on the Thursday League Nights (or if they are taking a class\, their class bow). \nLeague is open to anyone 8 and up. Previous archery experience required. \nSign up for all 10 weeks at once for $80 (20% discount for annual pass holders)\, or pay at the door for $10 per attendance. \nAGE CLASSES\nEach target station will have distance markers indicating where archers in different classes should shoot. The age classes are:\n• Cub (Under 12)\n• Youth (12-14)\n• Young Adult (15-17)\n• Adult (18+)\nAll archers will shoot from their specific yardage marker that will be marked and labeled at each target on the field course. All the distances are already measured\, marked and verified! \nFor our league – Longbow\, Traditional\, Barebow and Barebow Recurve shoot the same distances as Youth. Olympic Recurve shoots the distances as assigned for the age class they are registered in. \nThe maximum distances for each age division is as follows:\n• Cubs: 30 yards\n• Youth: 50 yards\n• Young Adult and Adult: 80 yards \nFIELD ROUND\nScoring is 5 for the spot\, 4 for the two white rings\, and 3 for the outside black rings. The X is counted as 5 points and used as a tiebreaker. \nEach archer shall shoot 4 arrows at each of the 14-target layouts in a unit. In 10 cases this shall mean shooting the four arrows from a single stake at a single target. In the other four it may mean either shooting one arrow from each of four stakes at a single target or it may mean shooting all four arrows from a single stake but at four separate targets\, or one arrow from each of four stakes at either two (2) or four (4) targets. \nFundamentals of a Field Round \nHUNTER ROUND\nScoring is 5 for the spot\, 4 for the center ring\, and 3 for the outer ring. The X is counted as 5 points and used as a tiebreaker. \nArchers will shoot 4 arrows at each of the 14 target layouts in a unit. In shooting the Hunter round the archer will observe the following shooting positions:\n• 1 marker – Shoot four arrows from the same stake.\n• 2 markers – Shoot two arrows from each stake.\n• 4 markers – Shoot one arrow from each stake. \nFundamentals of a Hunter Round \nANIMAL ROUND \nArchers will shoot a maximum of 3 marked arrows\, in successive order\, and the highest scoring arrow will count. In the case of walkup targets the first arrow must be shot from the farthest stake\, the second arrow from the middle stake\, and the third arrow from the nearest stake. \nScoring dots will NOT be used on animal targets. Dress in layers because the weather at the location may be different than it is in town. Pack water and snacks for the return trip. DESCRIPTION:Join other women for this handgun shooting workshop series for women\, taught by women on June 11\, 18 & 25 6-8 pm at the Outdoor Heritage Education Complex at Platte River State Park. This class will lead you through the basics of handgun safety\, handling and technique by shooting paper and steel targets. \nSession #1 will focus on gun handling by using Shot Indicating Resetting Trigger (SIRT) Training Pistols. We will cover magazines\, working actions and light shooting. Session #2 will increase shooting time\, build skills and add a variety of guns and actions. Session #3 we will use a training system to analyze shooting and correct problems. We will finish up with a fun competition shooting steel targets. At the conclusion of the workshop\, women will be able to identify parts of their handgun\, how to load magazines\, work actions\, grip\, stance\, and accuracy. \nThis is a Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program. \nParticipants may bring their own .22 handgun and ammunition that matches their gun. \nOpen to ladies 16 years and older. \nRegistration is required: Please email Julia Plugge at julia.plugge@nebraska.gov for registration instructions.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free field training to gain hands-on experience with the Nebraska Bumble Bee Atlas! The Atlas is a community science project aiming to track and conserve bumble bees in the state. Anyone is welcome to join the Atlas\, no experience is needed\, just a drive to help conserve pollinators! \nDuring this event\, participants will gain hands-on experience with the Atlas protocol\, including netting\, chilling\, and photographing bees\, as well as data recording/entry. The Atlas uses non-lethal survey methods\, so no bees are harmed during the project. The training will take place outside\, so please bring water\, closed-toed shoes\, and sun protection. The Atlas is a collaboration between Xerces Society and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. \nRegistration is required. REGISTER HERE \nWe will meet at the picnic tables outside of the Nature Center. A state park permit is required for entry.

SUMMARY:Rock Creek Trail Day
DESCRIPTION:Take a step back in time this June and explore Rock Creek Station –  a place where road ranches served pioneers along the Oregon-California Trail\, Pony Express riders carried mail across the West\, and Wild Bill Hickok began a legendary career as gunfighter! \nThe Visitor Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the event. Scheduled events include Pony Express demonstrations and a narration of the Hickok-McCandles incident at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Living history demonstrations will be held on the historic ranches throughout the day during the event. \nA free-will donation lunch of pulled pork sandwiches will be hosted by the Friends of Rock Creek Station from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. \nSaturday evening \, visitors can also enjoy a buffalo stew cookout and musical entertainment starting at 7 p.m. at the historic West Ranche site. Advanced cookout tickets will be on sale at the park’s Visitor Center and at the Fairbury Chamber of Commerce office. Adults $9/Children $6 (13 and under). \nThe musical entertainment begins after the buffalo stew cookout\, and the presentation is free and open to the public. David Marsh from the Humanities Nebraska Speaker’s Bureau will entertain audiences with his Music of the Plains program\, where he will share stories and sing songs that arose out of the common experience of life on the plains during the settlement era.
