SUMMARY:Kayak Clean Up & Invasive Species Awareness at Prairie Queen
DESCRIPTION:Our Nebraska wildlife thrive in clean and healthy spaces\, and people do too! Join Nebraska Game and Parks outdoor educators\, Invasive Species staff and members of the Greater Omaha Scuba club for a fun\, late-morning aquatic habitat clean up at Prairie Queen Recreation Area on Sunday morning\, May 31. \nIn addition to removing litter and improving the lake’s appearance\, this event will help raise awareness about aquatic invasive species found in the waterbody\, and throughout Nebraska. These invasive species negatively impact recreation\, Nebraska’s economy\, and native aquatic life by outcompeting native species and disrupting the lake’s ecosystem. Events like this encourage community involvement while promoting stewardship and prevention efforts to help protect Nebraska’s water resources.  \nSafety and basic instruction will be given at the beginning of the event. You will be emailed prior to the event to confirm your registration and any needed details. We will provide trash bags & gloves for all those interested in helping to clean up trash while on the water.  \n We will meet at the boat ramp and dock just off of the intersection of 132nd Street and Cornhusker Road\, on the West side of the lake. This area is in the northernmost section of the lake. On google maps it is identified as Prairie Queen’s Recreation Area.  \nThis event is free and we welcome you to either borrow a kayak or bring your own! Due to limited kayak supply\, we do require registration. \nTo use a kayak from Nebraska Game and Parks\, REGISTER HERE \n(Kayaks are available to people ages 10 & up\, and are limited to a first come first serve basis) \nTo let us know you plan on coming and that you’re either bringing your own kayak\, or cleaning up on land\, REGISTER HERE  \n  \nFor questions\, please contact Jena Paugels at jena.paugels@nebraska.gov. \n

SUMMARY:Teaching Ecology and Applied Sciences Using the Grassland Biome
DESCRIPTION:August 31st\, 2026| 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm (CT) Register Here   \n  \nNebraska’s grasslands\, covering half the state\, support ecology\, economy\, and culture while fostering biodiversity\, resilience\, and food production. I will offer an overview of grassland ecology/management and introduce lesson plans and trunks with hands-on materials on ecosystems\, soils\, plants\, carbon cycling\, human impacts\, global health\, and grassland communities. \n  \nPresenter: Cheryl Dunn\, University of Nebraska-Lincoln\, Grassland Specialist-Herbarium Curator \n  \nPresenter Bio: Cheryl Dunn is the Grassland Specialist and Herbarium Curator in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. She primarily teaches courses in plant identification and grassland ecology while leading outreach efforts that promote the conservation and appreciation of Nebraska’s native prairies. Her work focuses on plant identification\, grassland education\, invasive species\, and connecting students and the public with the ecological importance of the Great Plains. \nThis webinar is part of the Master Naturalist Mondays webinar series. Nebraska Master Naturalist is a statewide volunteer conservation program.  Our program recruits\, trains\, manages\, and provides resources for our volunteer naturalist members. We use four strategies to meet Nebraska’s conservation needs\, Habit Stewardship\, Community Science\, Environmental Education & Interpretation\, and Outdoor Recreation & Skills.   \nThis free webinar series will host a variety of presenters and subject matter within these four conservation strategies. Master Naturalist Mondays is a space to connect us to our conservation motivations and inspirations\, and our Naturalist community across the state of Nebraska.  \nFor questions\, email jamie.bachmann@nebraska.gov \nAll webinars will be recorded and found HERE. \nFor further details visit our website\, HERE.

SUMMARY:Science of...Prescribed Fire
DESCRIPTION:Prescribed fire is a powerful tool for managing Nebraska’s prairies and forests\, but there’s a lot of science behind the flames. This virtual program explores how controlled burns work\, why fire is important for plant and animal health\, and the safety measures that make it possible. You’ll learn how fire influences ecosystems\, helps control invasive species\, and supports biodiversity\, all while reducing the risk of larger wildfires.\n\nThis is a free virtual program\, however\, registration is required to attend. Please use this link to register: https://outdoornebraska.zoom.us/…/b__OXYaySBS49PTSmFfNPA\n\nQuestions? Email monica.macoubrie@nebraska.gov or visit the Nebraska Game and Parks Outdoor Calendar.
