SUMMARY:Master Naturalist Mondays: Mussel Monitoring at Homestead National Historical Park
DESCRIPTION:September 15th\, 2025| 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm (CST) Register Here   \nA conversation at a Nebraska Natural Legacy Conference regarding reintroduction of mussels to Cub Creek set in motion a series of questions that could be only answered through monitoring.  In this presentation Resource Management Specialist Jesse Bolli will take you through those questions while introducing you to the mussels of Homestead National Historical Park and why they matter.  \nPresenter: Jesse Bolli\, Resource Management Specialist\, NPS-Homestead National Historical Park \nPresenter Bio: Jesse Bolli began his position as the Resource Management Specialist at Homestead National Historical Park in September 2002.  His duties at Homestead include the management of the Nation’s second oldest restored tallgrass prairie\, a lowland bur oak forest\, Cub Creek and the wildlife within.  He is happiest when he is mentoring others\, helping them to see the delicate details of the natural world.  \nPrior to arriving at Homestead National Monument of America\, he worked in Florida\, Nebraska\, and Kansas as a federal wildland firefighter.  \nJesse received his Bachelors of Science in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences from South Dakota State University in Brookings\, South Dakota.  \nHe grew up near Burwell\, Nebraska on the homestead that his great granddad proved up on under the Homestead Act of 1862 in 1905.  It was on the homestead that he developed his love of the prairies and wildlife.   \n  \nThis webinar is part of the Master Naturalist Mondays webinar series. Nebraska Master Naturalist is a statewide volunteer conservation program.  Our program recruits\, trains\, manages\, and provides resources for our volunteer naturalist members. We use four strategies to meet Nebraska’s conservation needs\, Habit Stewardship\, Community Science\, Environmental Education & Interpretation\, and Outdoor Recreation & Skills.   \n  \nThis free webinar series will host a variety of presenters and subject matter within these four conservation strategies. DESCRIPTION:Want an opportunity to get your family outdoors over your winter break? Would you like to contribute to science? Join our Christmas Bird Count for Kids event at Schramm Education Center! Learn more about the birds that call Schramm home during the winter while participating in the longest running community science project in the country. During the event\, participants can choose to help count birds on a hike in the prairie or on a hike down to the Platte River. During the count\, we will be recording the number and type of birds we see. After we count\, we will join back up in the Schramm Classroom to tally our results and make bird crafts. We will be going out rain\, snow or sunshine\, so dress prepared for the weather! We’ll provide a limited number of binoculars\, so you’re encouraged to bring your own if you have them. If you choose to hike\, we will walk about a mile. The trails may be muddy or slick depending on weather conditions.\n\nChristmas Bird Count for Kids Schedule10:00-10:20: Christmas Bird Count Welcome\, Birding Basics\, and Introduction to Schramm Winter Birds in the Schramm Classroom10:20-11:30: Outdoor Bird Hikes11:30-12:00: Tally Results and Make Bird Crafts in the Schramm Classroom\n\nThis is the 126th year for the Audubon Christmas Bird Count. Each year\, thousands of volunteers help conduct an early-winter bird census in over 20 countries in the Western Hemisphere between the dates of December 14th and January 5th. Reports from each of these counts are sent to the Audubon Society\, which compiles the data to help inform researchers about the status of bird populations. When the Christmas Bird Count was first started in the year 1900\, it was held annually on Christmas Day to promote conservation\, hence the name.\n\nThe cost to participate is $5 per person (ages 3 and under free). The cost includes the program and admission to the Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass Members participate free. A state park vehicle permit is not required in the Schramm Education Center parking lot.

The East ODP provides interactive programs so all youth\, novice or experienced\, have the opportunity to explore new outdoor activities and recreational possibilities and learn new outdoor skills. The program is designed to enhance students’ knowledge and ethical understanding of wildlife and the outdoors. \nIn addition\, it encourages health and wellness by promoting active outdoor lifestyles. DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Bumble Bee Atlas is community science project focused on tracking and conserving Nebraska’s native bumble bees. We invite you to attend our virtual events this spring to learn about the project and how you can become a volunteer. \nThis 2-hour workshop will prepare community scientists and agency biologists to participate in the Missouri and Nebraska Bumble Bee Atlas projects in 2026. \nDuring this webinar\, we will provide clear guidance on how to participate in the Atlas and discuss priorities for the 2026 field season. The training will cover how to conduct your own survey\, where and when to survey\, what supplies you’ll need\, and how to submit your data. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Fort Kearny State Recreation Area May 6 and 7 for the annual Central Outdoor Discovery Program (ODP)! The Central ODP provides interactive programs so all youth\, novice or experienced\, have the opportunity to explore new outdoor activities and recreational possibilities and learn new outdoor skills. The program is designed to enhance students’ knowledge and ethical understanding of wildlife and the outdoors. \nIn addition\, it encourages health and wellness by promoting active outdoor lifestyles. It also engages students in fun\, interactive activities in the areas of wildlife and habitat management\, natural resource use\, Nebraska history\, shooting sports\, hunting skills\, aquatic knowledge and fishing skills\, and camping and recreation. Activities are designed to correlate with Nebraska state educational standards in the areas of science\, math\, history\, reading and writing. \nThe Central ODP is FREE and open to 4th through 6th grade students. DESCRIPTION:Do you love butterflies?  Are you a community member interested in conservation and science? Then join us for Nebraska’s Big Butterfly Count Training Workshop\, Saturday May 9th 2026\, 10AM-3PM at the UNL Extension West Central Research Extension and Education Center\, North Platte \nNebraska’s Big Butterfly Count is a community science project that is designed to collect statewide data in order to better understand butterfly diversity across Nebraska. At this workshop you will learn about community science\, Nebraska butterfly identification\, and how to conduct a butterfly survey for the project. Participants will receive project resources\, guidance\, and support from community science project leaders. \nWe are looking for dedicated volunteers that are willing to conduct a survey at least once every other week\, from May 1st through September 30th. \nThis workshop is FREE to attend and lunch will be provided. SUMMARY:Cutting Down Cedar Trees to Save the Forest - Zoom Webinar
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Nebraska Invasive Species Awareness Week\, invasive species professionals will be hosting Zoom webinars throughout the week! Join us on Tuesday\, May 26 at 1 p.m. CT to learn about invasive eastern red cedar trees and their environmental and ecological impacts. \nPre-registration required:  REGISTER HERE \nAbout the program: Schramm Park State Recreation Area in eastern Nebraska is a popular destination for hikers\, families\, and wildlife enthusiasts. The park features over 300 acres of oak woodlands\, riparian forest\, and eastern tallgrass prairie habitat. In recent years\, Schramm was designated a demonstration site for habitat conservation in the Nebraska State Wildlife Action Plan\, resulting in the creation of a habitat management plan for the park. In this plan\, eastern red cedar encroachment was identified as a major problem for the health of the park’s oak woodlands. \nEastern red cedar trees are a native species with invasive tendencies that can quickly take over fire-adapted ecosystems in the absence of periodic fire. In 2024\, with the help of state and federal funding\, contractors were hired to remove over 98 acres of red cedar trees as the first step in restoring our oak woodlands. In this presentation\, learn about the ongoing woodland restoration project at Schramm and the science behind it\, as well as strategies that we’ve used to educate and engage the public in our restoration efforts. \nAbout the presenter: Jen Ruyle is an Outdoor Education Specialist for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission based at Schramm Park State Recreation Area. Jen went to school to study biology\, completed an undergraduate research project on dung beetles\, and then went on to obtain a master’s in entomology. After many outreach presentations\, educational events\, and classroom visits to teach about insects\, she realized her true passion was environmental education. She has been working as an educator for 10 years. In her free time\, she is an avid gardener and is slowly converting her family’s acreage to native plants and trees. \nThere will be opportunity for a Q&A with Jen after the presentation.
