Participants will be able to build a bluebird box and get their own copy of “Get to Know Bluebirds”.\n\n\nProgram cost is $15/person (includes all four sessions). Mahoney’s newly renovated James Family Conservatory and Nature Center. \nThis program is designed for adults who love the outdoors and want to enjoy time in the parks. We will share a variety of nature-related topics with activities indoors and out. Join us on your own or bring along friends of any age. Free program. \n2026 Event Schedule\nMarch 10 – Beginner Birding: Learn how to be a birder as we explore beginner birding topics: identification\, tools and resources\, where to go birding and more. \nApril 14 – Bird Mist-Netting: Observe the process of mist-netting\, a tool used to catch and band birds for research. Get up close and learn about local bird species. \nMay 12 – Tardigrades & Tiny Things: Explore the micro and macro world in the park as we collect samples and see what is hiding in plain sight. \nJune 16 – Wildflowers & Watercolors: Learn about wildflowers while creating a simple watercolor artwork\, which you will complete as you explore our gardens and prairie. \nAugust 18 – Going Bullfrogging: Learn all about bullfrogs and their biology\, then try catching some at the lake with a net or fishing pole. Following the program\, we will head to the Marina. \nSeptember 1 – Pond Ecology: Use dip nets\, scopes and more to explore life in the lake. We will take a close look at critters we find and try to identify them. Meet at the Owen Marina. \nSeptember 22 – Primitive Shooting Sports: Try using a “wrist-rocket” sling shot and then throwing a spear with an atlatl as you practice to improve your precision and accuracy. Following the program\, we will head to the range. \nOctober 6 – Dutch Oven Desserts: Discover Dutch Oven cooking as we share pointers for perfect desserts. Help add ingredients and then enjoy some delicious desserts. \nNovember 10 – Forest Hike: Hike along wooded trails to discover the forest after the leaves have fallen. Dress for the weather. Trail is hilly\, uneven and has steps. We wills start at the tower by Riverview Lodge. \nDecember 1 – Phenology: A Study of Nature’s Calendar: Learn how to keep a journal to record nature’s changes through time. Observe migrations\, budding trees\, emerging insects and more. \n  \nA valid Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for park entry. DESCRIPTION:Each June the National Pony Express Association recreates the Pony Express in a Commemorative Re-Ride\, where letters are carried by horseback over the original trail that stretches from St. Joseph\, Missouri\, to Sacramento\, California. The 1\,966 mile\, eight-state event is conducted 24 hours a day over a 10-day period until the mail is delivered to its destination!  \nOn Tuesday\, June 16\, riders will exchange the mail at Rock Creek Station’s East Ranch at approximately 1:45 p.m. \nArrive early\, as the times are estimates and the Pony can be ahead or behind schedule! Rounds rotate weekly to provide experience across multiple formats\, helping archers prepare for competition or simply enjoy shooting with others.\n\nLeague nights are held on Thursdays at 6:00 PM\, beginning April 30. Archers may collect a scorecard and complete the round on their own time. DESCRIPTION:Second Shots Pistol is designed to build on the handgun skills introduced in our FIRST SHOTS course. It’s also a good refresher for those who are years out of practice. \nStudents learn more about ammunition\, loading a magazine\, clearing a pistol and locking the slide back\, and handling malfunctions. Plus\, students get the practical experience of loading and shooting a variety of handgun styles and calibers in the range. \nIn the range\, the basics of stance\, sight picture\, and trigger control are emphasized to maximize success. After completing this class\, participants will be prepared to safely use the range on their own. \nOverall\, Second Shots Pistol teaches the basic knowledge\, skills\, and attitude necessary for owning and using a handgun safely. The small class size allows students to ask questions and receive individual advice. \nCourse covers: \n\nHandgun knowledge & review safe handling\nReview fundamentals of handgun shooting\nAmmunition knowledge\nActual range practice\nA variety of pistols\, ammo\, and targets provided\n\nPlease bring your own eye and ear protection. \nIf you have your own pistol\, you may bring it to use on the range (be sure to bring 50 rounds of ammunition). \nClosed-neck shirts and closed-toe shoes are recommended. \nFor students age 16 and over. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Fort Hartsuff State Historical Park on June 19-21 for a living history weekend rendezvous. \nFort Hartsuff was built as the fur trade era was coming to an end. But the US Army relied on hunters and guides like “Happy Jack” Swearengen and Conrad “Little Buckshot” Wentworth as government scouts. Fur traders and trappers had spent years learning about the territory and the native people. Explore fur trade era living history with volunteers who embody the mountain men\, explorers\, and early entrepreneurs of the American West. \n  \nThe historical buildings and gift shop will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. \nAdmission: $5 (ages 13 & up)\, $1 (ages 3-12)\, no charge for ages 2 & under. \nA valid vehicle park entry permit is required. \n  \nVolunteers needed – Living history volunteers and vendors with interest in attending\, please contact the park.

Fishing Instructors are also available to provide helpful tips and answer questions. This is the perfect opportunity for people of all ages who have never been fishing or haven’t fished for years to learn. \nAll participants ages 16 and older need a fishing license. SUMMARY:Rafting and Rocks at Schramm Park SRA
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Schramm Park for an evening of rafting and rocks! We’ll have two activities to try. Round Rafts will be available for floating around on a pond and we will also be at the geological outcrop to explore the limestone layers and assist guests with discovering fossils in the rocks.\n\n\nPreregistration (Walk-ins welcome when class is below capacity.): REGISTER HERE\n\n\nNote: Round Raft Program Regulations: You must wear and fit in a life jacket and must be 8 & up to participate. Youth under 8 may ride with an adult chaperone if together are within craft weight limits or in tandem. Round Raft weight limit 225 lbs. SUMMARY:Field Archery & 3D League
DESCRIPTION:REGISTER HERE\nLEAGUE OVERVIEW\n\nThe FHA and 3D rounds simulate real-world shooting conditions\, challenging archers with varied distances\, target sizes\, and terrain. Rounds rotate weekly to provide experience across multiple formats\, helping archers prepare for competition or simply enjoy shooting with others.\n\nLeague nights are held on Thursdays at 6:00 PM\, beginning April 30. Participants will meet at the outdoor shooting tower before heading out in assigned groups to their starting targets on the field course.\n\nIf you are unable to attend Thursday league nights\, weekly targets will remain set for drop-in shooting during open hours (Friday through Tuesday\, sunrise to sunset). Archers may collect a scorecard and complete the round on their own time. Targets are rotated weekly.\n\n3D rounds are only available to be shot during scheduled Thursday league nights.\n\nRegistration:\nSign up for all 10 weeks for $80 (20% discount for annual pass holders)\, or pay $10 per night at the door.\n________________________________________\nROUND DESCRIPTIONS\n\nFIELD (NFAA)\n14 targets • 4 arrows per target\nStandard NFAA Field format.\n\nHUNTER (NFAA)\n14 targets • 4 arrows per target\nStandard NFAA Hunter format with varied shooting positions.\n\nANIMAL (NFAA)\n14 targets • up to 3 arrows per target\nHighest scoring arrow counts.
