Each program is led by certified educators and includes a story\, hands-on activities\, outdoor exploration\, and a themed nature lesson. Designed specifically for children ages 2–6\, these engaging programs encourage curiosity and foster a love of nature through play\, discovery\, and observation. \nThis program is FREE\, but a valid Nebraska Game and Parks Entry Permit is required for vehicles entering the park. DESCRIPTION:Enjoy some family-friendly spooky time shooting archery in the woods at the Turpin Outdoor Education Center on Saturday\, Oct. 24 or Sunday\, Oct. 25! \nREGISTRATION – Register groups of 2 to 10 people to experience a guided fall hike through our archery field course. Participants will get to explore the twisted trail and make 12 stops at archery stations to take aim at wickedly fun targets. No archery experience is needed and beginners are welcome! Participants must be at least 8 years old on the day of the event and an adult age 18 or older must be present. \nStart times for groups are available every 10 minutes from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday or 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The course is approximately one mile and takes about one hour to complete (allow additional time for check in and check out). Only paid participants are permitted on the course. \nCheck in at our indoor front desk to get equipped and meet your trail guide before heading out. \nCostumes are welcome and encouraged! \nWe provide all archery equipment\, or you can bring your own. \nCost: $15/person or $10/annual pass holder. Register your group under one account name (add exact number of participants on payment screen). Large groups may be split into smaller pods. All participants must be paid in advance. \nVIEW PRICING AND REGISTRATION \nPlease note: Hunts can be chilly\, so dress to stay warm in the forest. During check in\, meet with your expert guide at basecamp to get equipped for your adventure. Once geared up\, head out to our Haunted Forest to encounter ghosts\, spiders\, and zombie critters galore. Those brave and skilled enough will make it back out of the forest to see the sun once again!

Spooky activities will take place on Oct. 9-10\, 17\, and 24.\n  \nSchedule of Events\nOctober 9\n6-8 p.m.: Trick-or-Treat on the Town – Children up to age 12 are invited to go trick-or-treating along the decorated trail through the town of St. Deroin. A food truck will also be available.\nPricing: $3 per person ages 4+\, free for ages 3 and under (includes hayrack ride).\n\n  \n\n\nOctober 10\, 17 & 24\n2 p.m.: Pumpkin Roll for all ages; $3 per person\n6-8 p.m.: Trick-or-treating in RV campground (walk through only-no vehicles).\n7-9 p.m.: Haunted Hayrack Rides – Adults: $10\, kids ages 4-12 yrs: $7\, ages 3 and under: free. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the annual Fort Atkinson Candlelight Tour on Saturday\, Nov. 7! This year’s theme is “Elysian Fields”. Will the 6th Infantry be leaving their “Elysian Fields”? What are the signs that the Fort may be abandoned in the year of our Lord\, 1827? \nThis unique walking tour by candlelight among the historic buildings and around the grounds will take approximately one and a half hours. Each stop along the way will reveal another part of the evening’s theme\, which is based on actual events. \nPlease wear walking shoes and warm clothing. No flash photography\, no flashlights or pets will be allowed during the tour. DESCRIPTION:Nature enthusiasts ages 18+ are invited to attend the Wise & Wild program on select Tuesdays at 10 a.m. at Eugene T. Mahoney’s newly renovated James Family Conservatory and Nature Center. \nThis program is designed for adults who love the outdoors and want to enjoy time in the parks. We will share a variety of nature-related topics with activities indoors and out. Join us on your own or bring along friends of any age. Free program. \n2026 Event Schedule\nMarch 10 – Beginner Birding: Learn how to be a birder as we explore beginner birding topics: identification\, tools and resources\, where to go birding and more. \nApril 14 – Bird Mist-Netting: Observe the process of mist-netting\, a tool used to catch and band birds for research. Get up close and learn about local bird species. \nMay 12 – Tardigrades & Tiny Things: Explore the micro and macro world in the park as we collect samples and see what is hiding in plain sight. \nJune 16 – Wildflowers & Watercolors: Learn about wildflowers while creating a simple watercolor artwork\, which you will complete as you explore our gardens and prairie. \nAugust 18 – Going Bullfrogging: Learn all about bullfrogs and their biology\, then try catching some at the lake with a net or fishing pole. Following the program\, we will head to the Marina. \nSeptember 1 – Pond Ecology: Use dip nets\, scopes and more to explore life in the lake. We will take a close look at critters we find and try to identify them. Meet at the Owen Marina. \nSeptember 22 – Primitive Shooting Sports: Try using a “wrist-rocket” sling shot and then throwing a spear with an atlatl as you practice to improve your precision and accuracy. Following the program\, we will head to the range. \nOctober 6 – Dutch Oven Desserts: Discover Dutch Oven cooking as we share pointers for perfect desserts. Help add ingredients and then enjoy some delicious desserts. \nNovember 10 – Forest Hike: Hike along wooded trails to discover the forest after the leaves have fallen. Dress for the weather. Trail is hilly\, uneven and has steps. We wills start at the tower by Riverview Lodge. \nDecember 1 – Phenology: A Study of Nature’s Calendar: Learn how to keep a journal to record nature’s changes through time. Observe migrations\, budding trees\, emerging insects and more. \n  \nA valid Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for park entry. Programs are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Please dress appropriately for the weather and the activity. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a monthly PIKE — a Naturalist-led group hike — at beautiful Ponca State Park! \nMeet at the West Shelter at 10 a.m. and enjoy the scenic views\, native wildlife\, and fellowship until 12:30 p.m. Along the way\, Naturalists will talk about the cultural and natural history of the park and the flora and fauna found in the area. The trail will end with a warm fire and fresh baked dessert in a dutch oven. A perfect mix of fresh air\, nature\, and a sweet treat! \nCost: $15 per person (card only) \nPRE-REGISTRATION REQUIRED – Spots are limited and you must pre-register and pay by calling the park office at 402-755-2284. PIKEs are currently scheduled every second Saturday from Jan. 10 to Dec. 12\, 2026. \nA valid Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for entry and can be purchased at the park entrance or online.

SUMMARY:Homeschool Hikes at Schramm
DESCRIPTION:Homeschool Hikes is a monthly nature exploration program hosted by the Schramm Education Center geared towards homeschool families. Each month\, families can join a naturalist for a guided hike on the Schramm Park State Recreation Area hiking trails. During the program\, participants will ask questions\, draw\, observe\, and make discoveries in nature. Participants will have the opportunity to observe local phenomena\, plants\, and animals while exploring concepts such as patterns\, cause and effect\, and structure and function. \nThe cost to participate is $5 per person per program (adult and children are same price). This includes admission to the Schramm Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass members participate free. This program is recommended for ages 5 and up. Please register in advance so we can estimate attendance numbers: https://arcg.is/1HO45W0 . \nParticipants should dress in season-appropriate layers and wear closed-toed shoes that can get dirty. Hats and water bottles are recommended.
