DESCRIPTION:Second Shots Pistol is designed to build on the handgun skills introduced in our FIRST SHOTS course. It’s also a good refresher for those who are years out of practice. \nStudents learn more about ammunition\, loading a magazine\, clearing a pistol and locking the slide back\, and handling malfunctions. Plus\, students get the practical experience of loading and shooting a variety of handgun styles and calibers in the range. \nIn the range\, the basics of stance\, sight picture\, and trigger control are emphasized to maximize success. After completing this class\, participants will be prepared to safely use the range on their own. \nOverall\, Second Shots Pistol teaches the basic knowledge\, skills\, and attitude necessary for owning and using a handgun safely. The small class size allows students to ask questions and receive individual advice. \nCourse covers: \n\nHandgun knowledge & review safe handling\nReview fundamentals of handgun shooting\nAmmunition knowledge\nActual range practice\nA variety of pistols\, ammo\, and targets provided\n\nPlease bring your own eye and ear protection. \nIf you have your own pistol\, you may bring it to use on the range (be sure to bring 50 rounds of ammunition). \nClosed-neck shirts and closed-toe shoes are recommended. \nFor students age 16 and over. DESCRIPTION:Visit a state park for Free Fishing and Park Entry Day on May 17th! Enjoy a Saturday of fishing or state park activities without the need to purchase a fishing or park entry permit for the day. \nFree Fishing and Park Entry Day\, held annually in Nebraska on the Saturday preceding Memorial Day weekend\, means anyone can explore outdoor opportunities at any Nebraska state park\, state recreation area or state historical park. Anglers must observe all fishing regulations. Camping\, lodging and all other user fees still apply at state park areas. Entrance fees for museums at state historical parks and the entrance fee at the Schramm Education Center remain in effect. \n  \nFeatured park events\n\nSeveral family-friendly activities are scheduled in state park areas across the state to celebrate Free Fishing and Park Entry Day. \n  \nVENTURE PARKS CELEBRATION \nIn addition to Free Park and Fish Day we would like to celebrate the completion of the Venture Parks Project. In response to a demand for unique experiences and enhanced camping opportunities\, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has expanded activities and amenities at four popular state parks and recreation areas along the Platte River – Eugene T. Mahoney State Park\, Platte River State Park\, Schramm Park State Recreation Area and Louisville State Recreation Area. The expanded features\, called Venture Parks\, were possible thanks to innovative public/private partnerships. While many of the activities kick off Memorial Day weekend\, we will have some of the activities available to tour during Free Park and Fish Day. \n\nEugene T. Mahoney & Platte River State Parks \nBait a hook\, cast a line and catch a fish! Join our naturalists and Youth Fishing Instructors anytime between 9 a.m. and noon to give fishing a try. Free loaner equipment will be provided. The climbing wall and the Nature Conservatory will also be open. \n  \nLouisville SRA \nThere will be a bounce pillow available at Louisville State Recreation Area. \n  \nSchramm Park SRA \nJoin us for A Day to Play at Schramm Park SRA on May 17! Activities will include the grand opening of the new Treehouse Classroom\, float on a pond in a round raft\, or learn how to read rocks in the geological outcrop. VIEW DETAILS \n  \n  \nADDITIONAL PARK EVENTS \nAsh Hollow State Historical Park \nChildren under age 18 are invited to fish Ash Hollow’s pond and keep everything they catch. A free hot dog lunch will be served from noon to 2 p.m. \n\n  \nFort Hartsuff State Historical Park \nLiving history volunteers plan to take over the fort with 1860s impressions and demonstrations from the time of the War Between the States. Bait can be purchased at the Resource and Education Center. DESCRIPTION:Please join us at Summit Lake State Recreation on Saturday\, May 17 from 10 to 11 a.m. for a special event honoring Burt County military members and first responders. \nThe Nebraska Game and Parks Commission donated 92 trees for the Summit Lake SRA grove and planted them near the park entrance Oct. 30. The grove represents a variety of species native to Nebraska. \nEach tree has the name of a military member\, first responder or law enforcement officer who died while serving or from causes directly related from having served. A sign near the trees has a QR code to a website that lists the GPS location of each tree and the name and information of that person associated with it. \nRead more about the dedication here. \nThis event will take place on Free Fishing and Park Entry Day\, so a state park permit is not required for entry and fishing permits are not required.

DESCRIPTION:Mondays in May\, you are invited to join in an evening of archery FOR women\, taught by women. \nChoose from a four-week intro class or ‘next-level’ practice and coaching section\, depending on your comfort with the material. \nThe intro section features a lesson and time on the archery range practicing with a bow each week. Class goes from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. \nThe ‘next-level’ practice and coaching section is a time for women to hone their archery skills and receive individual coaching. DESCRIPTION:Looking to get outdoors and volunteer? Schramm Park SRA is holding a volunteer opportunity to assist with oak woodland restoration efforts. Join NGPC staff as we work on planting oak seedlings\, brush piling and forest floor cleanup along the Hackberry and Red Cedar trail.\nWear sturdy\, closed-toed shoes\, bring water\, and outdoor work gloves. Long sleeves are also recommended. All ages are welcome for this opportunity\, but anyone under the age of 18 must have an accompanying adult.\nMeet at the park shelter next to Pond A. We’ll kick things off at 9 am with an introduction to the project and then hike up into the forest as a group to get started. Volunteers will need to sign a standard volunteer waiver upon arrival. SUMMARY:Homeschool Hikes at Schramm
DESCRIPTION:Homeschool Hikes is a monthly nature exploration program hosted by the Schramm Education Center geared towards homeschool families. Each month\, families can join a naturalist for a guided hike on the Schramm Park State Recreation Area hiking trails. During the program\, participants will ask questions\, draw\, observe\, and make discoveries in nature. Participants will have the opportunity to observe local phenomena\, plants\, and animals while exploring concepts such as patterns\, cause and effect\, and structure and function. \nThe cost to participate is $5 per person per program (adult and children are same price). This includes admission to the Schramm Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass members participate free. This program is recommended for ages 5 and up. Please register in advance so we can estimate attendance numbers: https://arcg.is/1HO45W0 . \nParticipants should dress in season-appropriate layers and wear closed-toed shoes that can get dirty. Hats and water bottles are recommended. SUMMARY:Summer Field Hunter Animal League
DESCRIPTION:The Turpin Outdoor Education Center will be hosting a National Field Archery Association (NFAA) Field Hunter Animal (FHA) League at our beautiful outdoor Field Course this summer! \nThe FHA round simulates real-world conditions and challenges archers with varied distances\, target sizes\, and terrain. Each week we will alternate between the Field\, Hunter or Animal round that consists of 14 different targets each. If you haven’t been to our Field course before\, now is a great chance to explore it with other experienced archers! \nThe league will meet at the outdoor shooting tower at 6pm on Thursday evenings for 10 weeks\, starting May 15. From there groups will be determined and set to start at a specific target within the field course. \nIf you can’t make it to league night\, archers can drop-in during the center’s open hours\, collect your scorecard and shoot the round outside on the field course Friday through Tuesday\, sunrise to sunset. Targets will be rotated each week. The final date to turn in scorecards will be July 29. \nParticipants who are new to field archery should join us on Thursday evenings to enjoy shooting with the group\, to learn the ropes\, and gain valuable experience shooting with seasoned archers! \nIndividual prizes will be awarded by drawing ‘tickets’. Tickets are earned by attendance\, top score each week\, most overall improved\, and top overall score. The number of prizes awarded will depend on the number of entries (1 prize per 5 entries). Weekly top score tickets will be awarded for each age class/bow style represented. \nFor participants without personal equipment you may opt to use a rental bow on the Thursday League Nights (or if they are taking a class\, their class bow). \nLeague is open to anyone 8 and up. Previous archery experience required. \nSign up for all 10 weeks at once for $80 (20% discount for annual pass holders)\, or pay at the door for $10 per attendance. \nAGE CLASSES\nEach target station will have distance markers indicating where archers in different classes should shoot. The age classes are:\n• Cub (Under 12)\n• Youth (12-14)\n• Young Adult (15-17)\n• Adult (18+)\nAll archers will shoot from their specific yardage marker that will be marked and labeled at each target on the field course. All the distances are already measured\, marked and verified! \nFor our league – Longbow\, Traditional\, Barebow and Barebow Recurve shoot the same distances as Youth. Olympic Recurve shoots the distances as assigned for the age class they are registered in. \nThe maximum distances for each age division is as follows:\n• Cubs: 30 yards\n• Youth: 50 yards\n• Young Adult and Adult: 80 yards \nFIELD ROUND\nScoring is 5 for the spot\, 4 for the two white rings\, and 3 for the outside black rings. The X is counted as 5 points and used as a tiebreaker. \nEach archer shall shoot 4 arrows at each of the 14-target layouts in a unit. In 10 cases this shall mean shooting the four arrows from a single stake at a single target. In the other four it may mean either shooting one arrow from each of four stakes at a single target or it may mean shooting all four arrows from a single stake but at four separate targets\, or one arrow from each of four stakes at either two (2) or four (4) targets. \nFundamentals of a Field Round \nHUNTER ROUND\nScoring is 5 for the spot\, 4 for the center ring\, and 3 for the outer ring. The X is counted as 5 points and used as a tiebreaker. \nArchers will shoot 4 arrows at each of the 14 target layouts in a unit. In shooting the Hunter round the archer will observe the following shooting positions:\n• 1 marker – Shoot four arrows from the same stake.\n• 2 markers – Shoot two arrows from each stake.\n• 4 markers – Shoot one arrow from each stake. \nFundamentals of a Hunter Round \nANIMAL ROUND \nArchers will shoot a maximum of 3 marked arrows\, in successive order\, and the highest scoring arrow will count. In the case of walkup targets the first arrow must be shot from the farthest stake\, the second arrow from the middle stake\, and the third arrow from the nearest stake. \nScoring dots will NOT be used on animal targets. See our daily event schedule for ongoing activities from Friday to Sunday below. \n\n\n\nFriday\, May 23\nLocation: River Bluff Room in the Resource & Education Center \n5 p.m. – Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center’s Raptor Program — Join a Naturalist with Woodbury County Conservation for a raptor program and an opportunity to meet the ambassador owls from the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center. Harlan and Lucia are permanent residents who were injured in the wild and not able to be released.  \nCost: $2/person \n7:15 p.m. – Owl Pellets — Learn how owls swallow their prey whole and then regurgitate the undigestible material; the owl pellet. Participants will be given an owl pellet to investigate\, dissect\, and ID. \nCost: $3/kit; Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center 8 a.m.–7 p.m. \n\n\n\nSaturday\, May 24\n8:30 a.m. – Birds & Binoculars — Join a naturalist to learn how to use binoculars for bird viewing\, borrow a pair from us or bring your own. Receive plans to build your own bluebird boxes and discuss suggestions on best locations to install boxes. This activity is free. Meet at the Resource & Education Center. \n11:30 a.m. – Build Your Own Birdfeeder — Learn about the birds that live around Ponca State Park! DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Nebraska Bird Month with us at beautiful Ponca State Park over Memorial Day weekend! See our daily event schedule for ongoing activities from Friday to Sunday below. \n\n\n\nFriday\, May 23\nLocation: River Bluff Room in the Resource & Education Center \n5 p.m. – Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center’s Raptor Program — Join a Naturalist with Woodbury County Conservation for a raptor program and an opportunity to meet the ambassador owls from the Dorothy Pecaut Nature Center. Harlan and Lucia are permanent residents who were injured in the wild and not able to be released.  \nCost: $2/person \n7:15 p.m. – Owl Pellets — Learn how owls swallow their prey whole and then regurgitate the undigestible material; the owl pellet. Participants will be given an owl pellet to investigate\, dissect\, and ID. \nCost: $3/kit; Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center 8 a.m.–7 p.m. \n\n\n\nSaturday\, May 24\n8:30 a.m. – Birds & Binoculars — Join a naturalist to learn how to use binoculars for bird viewing\, borrow a pair from us or bring your own. We’ll take a short walk to frequently visited bird feeders and popular perching spots for a chance to see the many species that call Ponca State Park home. This activity is free. Meet in the Display Wing of the Resource and Education Center. \n10 a.m. – Gonna Find Me A Bluebird — Learn about the Bluebirds that spend the summer at Ponca State Park. Discuss bluebird life\, history\, and habitat needs. Inspect bluebird boxes\, observe nests\, eggs\, and both adult and young birds. Receive plans to build your own bluebird boxes and discuss suggestions on best locations to install boxes. This activity is free. Meet at the Resource & Education Center. \n11:30 a.m. – Build Your Own Birdfeeder — Learn about the birds that live around Ponca State Park! Create a pinecone and peanut butter feeder to take back to your cabin or home. \nCost: $2/kit; Pre-register and pay at the Resource & Education Center 8 a.m.–11:20 a.m. Meet behind the Resource & Education Center. \n1:30pm Build Your Own Wren House — House Wrens are a small\, very active and inquisitive bird with a rich bubbling song. Construct a wren house to take home and place in your own yard. They are comfortable nesting near human dwellings. Wood is precut and some of the construction is already started. Necessary tools and other required items are provided. Children will need adult supervision to complete construction using basic hand tools. Meet behind the Resource and Education Center.\n Cost: $10/kit; Pre-register and pay at the Resource & Education Center 8 a.m.–1 p.m. Only supplies for 8 wren houses left! \n3 p.m. – Birds\, Beaks\, and Feathers — Join a naturalist as we examine birds\, beaks\, and feathers of several study specimens and learn about the unique adaptations of different birds that you can find in or around Ponca State Park. This activity is free. Meet in the Display Wing of the Resource and Education Center. \n\n\n\nSunday\, May 25\n9 a.m. – Birding at the Backwaters — Join us for a morning of birding! We will meet at the Backwater Trail located near the Riverfront Campground for a short walk and use binoculars to observe different bird species along the Missouri River Backwaters. Borrow a pair of binoculars or bring your own. This activity is free.All levels of experience with birding and binoculars are welcome. Dress for the weather and meet at the Backwater Trail.
