DESCRIPTION:Nature enthusiasts ages 18+ are invited to attend the Wise & Wild program on select Tuesdays at 10 a.m. at Eugene T. Mahoney’s newly renovated James Family Conservatory and Nature Center. \nThis program is designed for adults who love the outdoors and want to enjoy time in the parks. We will share a variety of nature-related topics with activities indoors and out. Join us on your own or bring along friends of any age. Free program. \n2026 Event Schedule\nMarch 10 – Beginner Birding: Learn how to be a birder as we explore beginner birding topics: identification\, tools and resources\, where to go birding and more. \nApril 14 – Bird Mist-Netting: Observe the process of mist-netting\, a tool used to catch and band birds for research. Get up close and learn about local bird species. \nMay 12 – Tardigrades & Tiny Things: Explore the micro and macro world in the park as we collect samples and see what is hiding in plain sight. \nJune 16 – Wildflowers & Watercolors: Learn about wildflowers while creating a simple watercolor artwork\, which you will complete as you explore our gardens and prairie. \nAugust 18 – Going Bullfrogging: Learn all about bullfrogs and their biology\, then try catching some at the lake with a net or fishing pole. Following the program\, we will head to the Marina. \nSeptember 1 – Pond Ecology: Use dip nets\, scopes and more to explore life in the lake. We will take a close look at critters we find and try to identify them. Meet at the Owen Marina. \nSeptember 22 – Primitive Shooting Sports: Try using a “wrist-rocket” sling shot and then throwing a spear with an atlatl as you practice to improve your precision and accuracy. Following the program\, we will head to the range. \nOctober 6 – Dutch Oven Desserts: Discover Dutch Oven cooking as we share pointers for perfect desserts. Help add ingredients and then enjoy some delicious desserts. \nNovember 10 – Forest Hike: Hike along wooded trails to discover the forest after the leaves have fallen. Dress for the weather. Trail is hilly\, uneven and has steps. We wills start at the tower by Riverview Lodge. \nDecember 1 – Phenology: A Study of Nature’s Calendar: Learn how to keep a journal to record nature’s changes through time. Observe migrations\, budding trees\, emerging insects and more. \n  \nA valid Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for park entry. Programs are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Please dress appropriately for the weather and the activity. DESCRIPTION:Second Shots Pistol is designed to build on the handgun skills introduced in our FIRST SHOTS course. It’s also a good refresher for those who are years out of practice. \nStudents learn more about ammunition\, loading a magazine\, clearing a pistol and locking the slide back\, and handling malfunctions. Plus\, students get the practical experience of loading and shooting a variety of handgun styles and calibers in the range. \nIn the range\, the basics of stance\, sight picture\, and trigger control are emphasized to maximize success. After completing this class\, participants will be prepared to safely use the range on their own. \nOverall\, Second Shots Pistol teaches the basic knowledge\, skills\, and attitude necessary for owning and using a handgun safely. The small class size allows students to ask questions and receive individual advice. \nCourse covers: \n\nHandgun knowledge & review safe handling\nReview fundamentals of handgun shooting\nAmmunition knowledge\nActual range practice\nA variety of pistols\, ammo\, and targets provided\n\nPlease bring your own eye and ear protection. \nIf you have your own pistol\, you may bring it to use on the range (be sure to bring 50 rounds of ammunition). \nClosed-neck shirts and closed-toe shoes are recommended. \nFor students age 16 and over. This hands-on shotgun class is designed for women who are already comfortable with the basics of shotgun safety and shooting and are ready to advance their skills for the hunting field.  Pick from one of the three hour sessions. \n\n\n\nAugust 22 | 10 AM – 1 PM | Ponca State Park\nAugust 29 | 9 AM – 12 PM | Oak Creek Sporting Club\, Brainard\nSeptember 19 | 9 AM – 12 PM | Oak Creek Sporting Club\, Brainard\n\n\n\nThe four hour session will help build confidence\, improve accuracy\, and get field-ready for a successful hunting season. Three different dates are available. \nFee includes the price of 50 clays and use of shooting range. You are welcome to attend more than one of the session. Hotdog and bison burger meals will be available for purchase (card only). Black Cow Dairy will be on site to sell ice cream. \nThe Treehouse Classroom will be open from 5-8 p.m. \nJoin naturalists for a night hike to end the evening from 8-9 p.m. \nThis event is free and open to the public. A valid state park vehicle permit is required for entry. A map will be available at arrival with a list of all activities and locations.

Free program. \n2026 Event Schedule\nMarch 10 – Beginner Birding: Learn how to be a birder as we explore beginner birding topics: identification\, tools and resources\, where to go birding and more. \nApril 14 – Bird Mist-Netting: Observe the process of mist-netting\, a tool used to catch and band birds for research. Get up close and learn about local bird species. \nMay 12 – Tardigrades & Tiny Things: Explore the micro and macro world in the park as we collect samples and see what is hiding in plain sight. \nJune 16 – Wildflowers & Watercolors: Learn about wildflowers while creating a simple watercolor artwork\, which you will complete as you explore our gardens and prairie. \nAugust 18 – Going Bullfrogging: Learn all about bullfrogs and their biology\, then try catching some at the lake with a net or fishing pole. SUMMARY:Little Saplings Nature Discovery Program
DESCRIPTION:Do you have a little one who loves animals\, nature\, and the outdoors? Are you looking for opportunities to explore the outdoors together with your children? Join us for Little Saplings\, Schramm Education Center’s early childhood nature discovery program. Little Saplings\, a monthly program designed for children ages 2 – 5 and their adult caregiver\, will bring nature themes to life for your child through story time\, sensory activities\, crafts\, and outdoor exploration! \nThe series is held on the first Wednesday of every month from 9 – 10 am and 10 – 11 am.  The cost to participate is $5 per child and $5 per adult per program and includes admission to the Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass members participate free. A State Park Vehicle Entry Permit is not required in the Schramm Education Center parking lot. Stop by the booth located near the Children’s Adventure Trails any time during zoo hours (9 a.m.-5 p.m.). \nFollow monarchs like never before using tiny\, solar-powered radio tags that transmit real-time signals on Bluetooth frequencies\, so you can detect tagged monarchs right from your phone. \nThis Project Monarch event is hosted by Monarch Joint Venture in partnership with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium. \nThis activity is free and open to the public\, but zoo admission is required for entry. \nFor more information\, please contact Mercy Manzanares at mercy@monarchjointventure.org.

SUMMARY:Nature Night at Ponca State Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Ponca State Park’s Naturalist team for an evening all about nature! Meet at the Resource Center for different activities throughout the night. Guests are encouraged to participate in as many activities as they would like! Activities will be at staggered times throughout the evening\, located around the Resource Center. \n  \nActivity Schedule:\n6-7:30 p.m. – Owls\, Bats\, and Salamanders: Learn about some of Nebraska’s creatures of the night through educational activities and a craft! \n7-8:30 p.m. – Campfire Treats: Stop by our campfire to make some classic campfire favorite treats and to learn about fire building and safety! \n8 p.m. – Nature Trivia: Come test your nature knowledge with fun family trivia. Participants can be in teams of 1-5 people and must sign up their team before 8 p.m. Register by stopping into the main office. \n9-10 p.m. – Frog Calling: Hop on over to our nearby pond to discover which native frogs we have in Nebraska and listen to the songs they sing! \n9-10:30 p.m. – Moth Lighting: Check out our moth lighting station to catch and identify live insects we have in the park! \n  \nPlease call the park office at 402-755-2284 for more information. No registration required! \n  \n*There are costs for the campfire treats ($1) and for owl pellets ($2); all of the other programs are free. SUMMARY:Living History Weekend at Fort Atkinson: Military Timeline
DESCRIPTION:Travel 200 years through America’s military timeline and experience history on the Great Plains at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park on Sept. 5-6\, 2026! \nMilitary reenactor groups will represent the French and Indian\, Civil\, World War I\, World War II\, Korean\, and Vietnam wars and through the present. Military vehicles\, including Willy jeeps\, a British scout car and more\, will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. \nAn archeology walk will be at 11 a.m. daily. \nOngoing demonstrations featuring military and civilian life of the 1820s will occur throughout the park. Reenactors will portray fur traders\, coopers\, blacksmiths\, carpenters\, tinsmiths\, weavers and other period trades outside of the fort walls. Other ongoing activities will include carpentry/log hewing at the southeast barrack.
