DESCRIPTION:Join Nebraska Game and Parks outdoor educators and partners for a night of kayaking and cleaning up your local aquatic habitat at Zorinsky Lake on Tuesday evening\, August 11. Because what’s good for wildlife is good for people too. \nThis is part of our statewide kayak clean up series. Once a year we gather at multiple locations on the same evening and work to collect a large amount of trash. This teamwork builds a great community! \nWe will provide trash bags and gloves for all those interested in helping to clean up trash while on the water. We will meet at the Zorinsky Lake Trailhead parking lot\, just East of 168th street on the North side of the lake.  \nSafety and basic instruction will be given at the beginning of the event. You will be emailed prior to the event to confirm your registration and any needed details. \nThis event is free and we welcome you to either borrow a kayak or bring your own! Get up close and learn about local bird species. \nMay 12 – Tardigrades & Tiny Things: Explore the micro and macro world in the park as we collect samples and see what is hiding in plain sight. \nJune 16 – Wildflowers & Watercolors: Learn about wildflowers while creating a simple watercolor artwork\, which you will complete as you explore our gardens and prairie. \nAugust 18 – Going Bullfrogging: Learn all about bullfrogs and their biology\, then try catching some at the lake with a net or fishing pole. Following the program\, we will head to the Marina. \nSeptember 1 – Pond Ecology: Use dip nets\, scopes and more to explore life in the lake. We will take a close look at critters we find and try to identify them. Meet at the Owen Marina. \nSeptember 22 – Primitive Shooting Sports: Try using a “wrist-rocket” sling shot and then throwing a spear with an atlatl as you practice to improve your precision and accuracy. Following the program\, we will head to the range. \nOctober 6 – Dutch Oven Desserts: Discover Dutch Oven cooking as we share pointers for perfect desserts. Help add ingredients and then enjoy some delicious desserts. \nNovember 10 – Forest Hike: Hike along wooded trails to discover the forest after the leaves have fallen. Dress for the weather. Trail is hilly\, uneven and has steps. We wills start at the tower by Riverview Lodge. \nDecember 1 – Phenology: A Study of Nature’s Calendar: Learn how to keep a journal to record nature’s changes through time. Observe migrations\, budding trees\, emerging insects and more. \n  \nA valid Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for park entry. DESCRIPTION:Second Shots Pistol is designed to build on the handgun skills introduced in our FIRST SHOTS course. It’s also a good refresher for those who are years out of practice. \nStudents learn more about ammunition\, loading a magazine\, clearing a pistol and locking the slide back\, and handling malfunctions. Plus\, students get the practical experience of loading and shooting a variety of handgun styles and calibers in the range. \nIn the range\, the basics of stance\, sight picture\, and trigger control are emphasized to maximize success. After completing this class\, participants will be prepared to safely use the range on their own. \nOverall\, Second Shots Pistol teaches the basic knowledge\, skills\, and attitude necessary for owning and using a handgun safely. The small class size allows students to ask questions and receive individual advice. \nCourse covers: \n\nHandgun knowledge & review safe handling\nReview fundamentals of handgun shooting\nAmmunition knowledge\nActual range practice\nA variety of pistols\, ammo\, and targets provided\n\nPlease bring your own eye and ear protection. \nIf you have your own pistol\, you may bring it to use on the range (be sure to bring 50 rounds of ammunition). \nClosed-neck shirts and closed-toe shoes are recommended. \nFor students age 16 and over. First Shots makes getting started in shooting very easy – and\, thanks to NSSF partnership*\, it’s only $10! \nAt a First Shots seminar\, you’ll receive:\n-An educational introduction to the safe and recreational use of firearms\n-Individual and group training\n-A rundown of shooting sports opportunities for all levels of interest\n-A chance to give shooting a try! \nThis seminar offers a small group setting for students ages 16 and over. SUMMARY:Full Moon Hike at Ponca State Park
DESCRIPTION:Join Ponca State Park Naturalists on the Corps of Discovery Trail to watch the moon rise!  \nMeet at the Riverfront Playground for guided hikes (approximately one hour) along the beautiful wooded trails. These hikes will include some steep inclines and are considered moderately challenging. Hikers are encouraged to bring water and snacks. \nHandheld flashlights will be provided. Guests can bring their own headlamps or flashlights if they prefer. \nHike are scheduled for following dates and times: \nApril 1 at 7:30 p.m.\nMay 1 at 8:45 p.m.\nMay 31 at 9:45 p.m.\nJune 29 at 9:15 p.m.\nJuly 29 at 9 p.m.\nAugust 27 at 7:45 p.m.\nSeptember 26 at 6:45 p.m.\nOctober 25 at 5:45 p.m.\nHike may be cancelled due to weather or staffing. Please call the park office at 402-755-2284 to confirm. \nA valid state park vehicle permit is required for park entry.

DESCRIPTION:Have you ever heard a rattlesnake? Smelled snake musk? Felt the keeled scales of a garter snake?\nSchramm Education Center is hosting its annual “Snakes of Nebraska” event on Saturday\, August 29th and Sunday\, August 30th! University of Nebraska-Lincoln herpetologist Dennis Ferraro and his lab will lead a live snake encounter featuring most of Nebraska’s 29 snake species. The live snake exhibits will be set up open-house style in the Schramm Education Center classroom and will be available on both Saturday and Sunday from 10 am – 4:30 pm.\n\nAt this free event\, you can see most of Nebraska’s 29 snake species\, meet UNL herpetologist Dennis Ferraro\, ask an expert your snake questions\, and even see venomous snakes up close. Join us to learn more about the amazing\, diverse snakes that call Nebraska home.\n\nThis is a free event. Regular Schramm Education Center admission fees will apply for anyone opting to visit the Education Center in addition to the event. A state park vehicle permit is not required in the Education Center parking lot. Please use the classroom entrance (on the left side of the building next to the Nebraska Game and Parks logo) to visit the event.
