SUMMARY:Summer Field Hunter Animal League
DESCRIPTION:The Turpin Outdoor Education Center will be hosting a National Field Archery Association (NFAA) Field Hunter Animal (FHA) League at our beautiful outdoor Field Course this summer! \nThe FHA round simulates real-world conditions and challenges archers with varied distances\, target sizes\, and terrain. Each week we will alternate between the Field\, Hunter or Animal round that consists of 14 different targets each. If you haven’t been to our Field course before\, now is a great chance to explore it with other experienced archers! \nThe league will meet at the outdoor shooting tower at 6pm on Thursday evenings for 10 weeks\, starting May 15. From there groups will be determined and set to start at a specific target within the field course. \nIf you can’t make it to league night\, archers can drop-in during the center’s open hours\, collect your scorecard and shoot the round outside on the field course Friday through Tuesday\, sunrise to sunset. Targets will be rotated each week. The final date to turn in scorecards will be July 29. \nParticipants who are new to field archery should join us on Thursday evenings to enjoy shooting with the group\, to learn the ropes\, and gain valuable experience shooting with seasoned archers! \nIndividual prizes will be awarded by drawing ‘tickets’. Tickets are earned by attendance\, top score each week\, most overall improved\, and top overall score. The number of prizes awarded will depend on the number of entries (1 prize per 5 entries). Weekly top score tickets will be awarded for each age class/bow style represented. \nFor participants without personal equipment you may opt to use a rental bow on the Thursday League Nights (or if they are taking a class\, their class bow). \nLeague is open to anyone 8 and up. Previous archery experience required. \nSign up for all 10 weeks at once for $80 (20% discount for annual pass holders)\, or pay at the door for $10 per attendance. \nAGE CLASSES\nEach target station will have distance markers indicating where archers in different classes should shoot. The age classes are:\n• Cub (Under 12)\n• Youth (12-14)\n• Young Adult (15-17)\n• Adult (18+)\nAll archers will shoot from their specific yardage marker that will be marked and labeled at each target on the field course. All the distances are already measured\, marked and verified! \nFor our league – Longbow\, Traditional\, Barebow and Barebow Recurve shoot the same distances as Youth. Olympic Recurve shoots the distances as assigned for the age class they are registered in. \nThe maximum distances for each age division is as follows:\n• Cubs: 30 yards\n• Youth: 50 yards\n• Young Adult and Adult: 80 yards \nFIELD ROUND\nScoring is 5 for the spot\, 4 for the two white rings\, and 3 for the outside black rings. The X is counted as 5 points and used as a tiebreaker. \nEach archer shall shoot 4 arrows at each of the 14-target layouts in a unit. In 10 cases this shall mean shooting the four arrows from a single stake at a single target. In the other four it may mean either shooting one arrow from each of four stakes at a single target or it may mean shooting all four arrows from a single stake but at four separate targets\, or one arrow from each of four stakes at either two (2) or four (4) targets. \nFundamentals of a Field Round \nHUNTER ROUND\nScoring is 5 for the spot\, 4 for the center ring\, and 3 for the outer ring. The X is counted as 5 points and used as a tiebreaker. \nArchers will shoot 4 arrows at each of the 14 target layouts in a unit. In shooting the Hunter round the archer will observe the following shooting positions:\n• 1 marker – Shoot four arrows from the same stake.\n• 2 markers – Shoot two arrows from each stake.\n• 4 markers – Shoot one arrow from each stake. \nFundamentals of a Hunter Round \nANIMAL ROUND \nArchers will shoot a maximum of 3 marked arrows\, in successive order\, and the highest scoring arrow will count. In the case of walkup targets the first arrow must be shot from the farthest stake\, the second arrow from the middle stake\, and the third arrow from the nearest stake. \nScoring dots will NOT be used on animal targets. The maximum score for each animal round is 280 points. \nFundamentals of a Animal Round \nLEAGUE SCHEDULE\nWeek 1 – May 15: Field\nWeek 2 – May 22: Hunter\nWeek 3 – May 29: Animal\nWeek 4 – June 5: Field\nWeek 5 – June 12: Hunter\nWeek 6 – June 19: Animal\nWeek 7 – June 26: Field\nWeek 0 – July 3: No league\nWeek 8 – July 10: Hunter\nWeek 9 – July 17: Animal\nWeek 10 – July 24: Archers Choice – Final Week \nRULES\nAll rounds will follow NFAA rules as stated in the NFAA Constitution and By-Laws\, Article VI\, Sections A-C (pp 50-54). Harlan and Lucia are permanent residents who were injured in the wild and not able to be released.  \nCost: $2/person \n7:15 p.m. – Owl Pellets — Learn how owls swallow their prey whole and then regurgitate the undigestible material; the owl pellet. Participants will be given an owl pellet to investigate\, dissect\, and ID. \nCost: $3/kit; Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center 8 a.m.–7 p.m. \n\n\n\nSaturday\, May 24\n8:30 a.m. – Birds & Binoculars — Join a naturalist to learn how to use binoculars for bird viewing\, borrow a pair from us or bring your own. Harlan and Lucia are permanent residents who were injured in the wild and not able to be released.  \nCost: $2/person \n7:15 p.m. – Owl Pellets — Learn how owls swallow their prey whole and then regurgitate the undigestible material; the owl pellet. Participants will be given an owl pellet to investigate\, dissect\, and ID. \nCost: $3/kit; Pre-register and pay at the Resource and Education Center 8 a.m.–7 p.m. \n\n\n\nSaturday\, May 24\n8:30 a.m. – Birds & Binoculars — Join a naturalist to learn how to use binoculars for bird viewing\, borrow a pair from us or bring your own. We’ll take a short walk to frequently visited bird feeders and popular perching spots for a chance to see the many species that call Ponca State Park home. This activity is free. Meet in the Display Wing of the Resource and Education Center. \n10 a.m. – Gonna Find Me A Bluebird — Learn about the Bluebirds that spend the summer at Ponca State Park. Discuss bluebird life\, history\, and habitat needs. Inspect bluebird boxes\, observe nests\, eggs\, and both adult and young birds. Receive plans to build your own bluebird boxes and discuss suggestions on best locations to install boxes. This activity is free. Meet at the Resource & Education Center. \n11:30 a.m. – Build Your Own Birdfeeder — Learn about the birds that live around Ponca State Park! Create a pinecone and peanut butter feeder to take back to your cabin or home. \nCost: $2/kit; Pre-register and pay at the Resource & Education Center 8 a.m.–11:20 a.m. Meet behind the Resource & Education Center. \n1:30pm Build Your Own Wren House — House Wrens are a small\, very active and inquisitive bird with a rich bubbling song. Construct a wren house to take home and place in your own yard. They are comfortable nesting near human dwellings. Wood is precut and some of the construction is already started. Necessary tools and other required items are provided. Children will need adult supervision to complete construction using basic hand tools. We absolutely need to suppress their growth and spread and limit the damage they cause. However\, Nebraska also has a lot of other plants that we call ‘weeds’ or ‘weedy’ that really aren’t harmful at all. Many of them are just opportunists who can appear quicky and in big numbers when nearby plant competition is reduced by grazing\, flooding\, fire\, or other forces. Those opportunists provide great pollinator and wildlife value or\, at worst\, just come and go without really causing any lasting damage to anyone or anything. Let’s talk about how to tell the difference and why it matters. \nPresenter: Chris Helzer\, The Nature Conservancy \nChris Helzer is the Nebraska Director of Science and Stewardship for The Nature Conservancy. He conducts research on grasslands\, helps develop and test land management strategies\, supervises the stewardship of the Conservancy’s staffed preserves in Nebraska\, and spends lot of time blathering on about how beautiful and valuable prairies are. The Don’t Let It Loose messaging and branding gains from its simplicity\, clarity\, and consistency. The ultimate objective is to reduce instances of pet release and the introduction of invasive species. This presentation will outline the importance of the message\, identify challenges that continue to loom\, and explore new opportunities and advancements for the program and its dedicated partners. \nPresenter: Sara Rickfels\, Invasive Species Action Network \nSara Ricklefs is the Executive Director of Invasive Species Action Network\, a non-profit based out of Livingston\, Montana. SUMMARY:Summer Field Hunter Animal League
DESCRIPTION:The Turpin Outdoor Education Center will be hosting a National Field Archery Association (NFAA) Field Hunter Animal (FHA) League at our beautiful outdoor Field Course this summer! \nThe FHA round simulates real-world conditions and challenges archers with varied distances\, target sizes\, and terrain. Each week we will alternate between the Field\, Hunter or Animal round that consists of 14 different targets each. If you haven’t been to our Field course before\, now is a great chance to explore it with other experienced archers! \nThe league will meet at the outdoor shooting tower at 6pm on Thursday evenings for 10 weeks\, starting May 15. From there groups will be determined and set to start at a specific target within the field course. \nIf you can’t make it to league night\, archers can drop-in during the center’s open hours\, collect your scorecard and shoot the round outside on the field course Friday through Tuesday\, sunrise to sunset. Targets will be rotated each week. The final date to turn in scorecards will be July 29. \nParticipants who are new to field archery should join us on Thursday evenings to enjoy shooting with the group\, to learn the ropes\, and gain valuable experience shooting with seasoned archers! \nIndividual prizes will be awarded by drawing ‘tickets’. Tickets are earned by attendance\, top score each week\, most overall improved\, and top overall score. The number of prizes awarded will depend on the number of entries (1 prize per 5 entries). Weekly top score tickets will be awarded for each age class/bow style represented. \nFor participants without personal equipment you may opt to use a rental bow on the Thursday League Nights (or if they are taking a class\, their class bow). \nLeague is open to anyone 8 and up. Previous archery experience required. \nSign up for all 10 weeks at once for $80 (20% discount for annual pass holders)\, or pay at the door for $10 per attendance. \nAGE CLASSES\nEach target station will have distance markers indicating where archers in different classes should shoot. The age classes are:\n• Cub (Under 12)\n• Youth (12-14)\n• Young Adult (15-17)\n• Adult (18+)\nAll archers will shoot from their specific yardage marker that will be marked and labeled at each target on the field course. All the distances are already measured\, marked and verified! \nFor our league – Longbow\, Traditional\, Barebow and Barebow Recurve shoot the same distances as Youth. Olympic Recurve shoots the distances as assigned for the age class they are registered in. \nThe maximum distances for each age division is as follows:\n• Cubs: 30 yards\n• Youth: 50 yards\n• Young Adult and Adult: 80 yards \nFIELD ROUND\nScoring is 5 for the spot\, 4 for the two white rings\, and 3 for the outside black rings. The X is counted as 5 points and used as a tiebreaker. \nEach archer shall shoot 4 arrows at each of the 14-target layouts in a unit. In 10 cases this shall mean shooting the four arrows from a single stake at a single target. In the other four it may mean either shooting one arrow from each of four stakes at a single target or it may mean shooting all four arrows from a single stake but at four separate targets\, or one arrow from each of four stakes at either two (2) or four (4) targets. \nFundamentals of a Field Round \nHUNTER ROUND\nScoring is 5 for the spot\, 4 for the center ring\, and 3 for the outer ring. The X is counted as 5 points and used as a tiebreaker. \nArchers will shoot 4 arrows at each of the 14 target layouts in a unit. In shooting the Hunter round the archer will observe the following shooting positions:\n• 1 marker – Shoot four arrows from the same stake.\n• 2 markers – Shoot two arrows from each stake.\n• 4 markers – Shoot one arrow from each stake. \nFundamentals of a Hunter Round \nANIMAL ROUND \nArchers will shoot a maximum of 3 marked arrows\, in successive order\, and the highest scoring arrow will count. In the case of walkup targets the first arrow must be shot from the farthest stake\, the second arrow from the middle stake\, and the third arrow from the nearest stake. \nScoring dots will NOT be used on animal targets. The maximum score for each animal round is 280 points. \nFundamentals of a Animal Round \nLEAGUE SCHEDULE\nWeek 1 – May 15: Field\nWeek 2 – May 22: Hunter\nWeek 3 – May 29: Animal\nWeek 4 – June 5: Field\nWeek 5 – June 12: Hunter\nWeek 6 – June 19: Animal\nWeek 7 – June 26: Field\nWeek 0 – July 3: No league\nWeek 8 – July 10: Hunter\nWeek 9 – July 17: Animal\nWeek 10 – July 24: Archers Choice – Final Week \nRULES\nAll rounds will follow NFAA rules as stated in the NFAA Constitution and By-Laws\, Article VI\, Sections A-C (pp 50-54). You get to your favorite fishing hole\, throw a line out\, and are immediately caught in the “weeds” as you try and reel in. When thinking of aquatic invasive species thoughts often arise of critters such as jumping carp\, zebra mussels\, or crawling crayfish. However\, the most widespread AIS issue in Nebraska is not these species but actually invasive aquatic plants. Come listen to Kristopher Stahr\, NGPC AIS Program Manager (often called the weed doctor)\, describe the impact these species are having in Nebraska and the efforts being undertaken to control these pesky plants in our waters. \nPresenter: Kristopher Stahr\, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission \nKristopher is the NGPC’S AIS Manager since the program was created in 2020. He first began working with aquatic invasive species as a temporary in Iowa in 2009.
