DESCRIPTION:Not plant\, not animal\, not fungus…so what is it? It’s a slime mold. Slime Molds come in every color of the rainbow\, except a true green and can form strange and sophisticated shapes. Some look like honeycomb lattices\, and others resemble blackberries. And then you have the “dog vomit” slime mold\, because\, well…you get it. These organisms can be found everywhere and can be as large as 10-13 feet\, yet humans often ignore them. DESCRIPTION:Nebraska Big Butterfly Count \nMarch 10th\, 2025| 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm (CST) Register Here   \nNebraska Big Butterfly Count is a community science project in partnership with Nebraska Master Naturalist\, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission\, and the Nebraska Natural Legacy Project.  Joanne\, will discuss the training required for the project and why it is so important to survey the state of Nebraska’s butterflies. \nPresenter: Joanne Langabee\, Nebraska Master Naturalist \nPresenter Bio: Joanne is a retired science teacher and has been a Nebraska Master Naturalist since 2011.  She has been doing butterfly surveys for Lauritzen Gardens and Fontenelle Forest since 2015 and has been working with Nebraska Game and Parks since 2022. \nThis webinar is part of the Master Naturalist Mondays webinar series. Nebraska Master Naturalist is a statewide volunteer conservation program.  Our program recruits\, trains\, manages\, and provides resources for our volunteer naturalist members. We use four strategies to meet Nebraska’s conservation needs\, Habit Stewardship\, Community Science\, Environmental Education & Interpretation\, and Outdoor Recreation & Skills.   \nThis free webinar series will host a variety of presenters and subject matter within these four conservation strategies. We absolutely need to suppress their growth and spread and limit the damage they cause. However\, Nebraska also has a lot of other plants that we call ‘weeds’ or ‘weedy’ that really aren’t harmful at all. Many of them are just opportunists who can appear quicky and in big numbers when nearby plant competition is reduced by grazing\, flooding\, fire\, or other forces. Those opportunists provide great pollinator and wildlife value or\, at worst\, just come and go without really causing any lasting damage to anyone or anything. Let’s talk about how to tell the difference and why it matters. \nPresenter: Chris Helzer\, The Nature Conservancy \nChris Helzer is the Nebraska Director of Science and Stewardship for The Nature Conservancy. He conducts research on grasslands\, helps develop and test land management strategies\, supervises the stewardship of the Conservancy’s staffed preserves in Nebraska\, and spends lot of time blathering on about how beautiful and valuable prairies are. Help us collect valuable data about these at-risk species in the state. \nThe training will open with a presentation at 1 p.m.\, followed by a mock survey. During this extensive training\, you will learn how to walk an assigned transect\, count butterflies\, and assess habitat features. SUMMARY:Wildcat Hills Bumble Bee Atlas Training
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free field training to gain hands-on experience with the Nebraska Bumble Bee Atlas! The Atlas is a community science project aiming to track and conserve bumble bees in the state. Anyone is welcome to join the Atlas\, no experience is needed\, just a drive to help conserve pollinators! \nDuring this event\, participants will gain hands-on experience with the Atlas protocol\, including netting\, chilling\, and photographing bees\, as well as data recording/entry. The Atlas uses non-lethal survey methods\, so no bees are harmed during the project. The training will take place outside\, so please bring water\, closed-toed shoes\, and sun protection. The Atlas is a collaboration between Xerces Society and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. \nRegistration is required. REGISTER HERE \nWe will meet at the picnic tables outside of the Nature Center. A state park permit is required for entry.
