DESCRIPTION:Explore the world of birding by joining the Birds of a Feather program at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park’s newly renovated James Family Conservatory and Nature Center. \nThis is a program for birders of all ages and levels. We introduce a different birding topic each session to begin the program. When weather permits\, we will head outdoors for a hike or time in the birding area. The program runs approximately 60-90 minutes and is offered on select Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. on a monthly basis. \nOn August 5\, participants will learn more about woodpeckers and their special adaptations. DESCRIPTION:Join a virtual meeting on Wednesday\, Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. CT to learn about Nebraska’s updated state wildlife action plan\, which outlines conservation efforts and priorities for Nebraska’s most vulnerable plant and animal species. \nThe Zoom meeting will cover proposed updates to the plan\, known as the Nebraska Natural Legacy Project. \nREGISTER HERE > \n  \nProposed changes include: \n· Modified Biologically Unique Landscape boundaries \n· The addition of a Biologically Unique Ecoregion that encompasses the Sandhills \n· The addition of priority watersheds \n· An updated list of species covered in Tier I and Tier II designations; 44 species were added and 53 were removed. \n· The addition of a list of species that scientists and managers lack sufficient knowledge of to allow for a population assessment \n· Expanded wildlife-based recreation and education sections. \n  \nThe plan will be open for public comment Aug. 1 to Aug. 15 on the Nebraska Natural Legacy Project web page. Those submitting feedback should review the threats and conservation strategies for the biologically unique landscape (BUL) nearest to their location.

SUMMARY:Becoming an Outdoors Woman - BOW with the Flow
DESCRIPTION:Take your kayaking experience to the next level at Smith Falls State Park on August 8\, 9 & 10.  Spend the weekend with The Becoming an Outdoors Woman kayaking the Niobrara River\, primitive tent camping near Nebraska’s highest waterfall\, exploring the landscape\, hiking trails\, preparing campfire meals\, learning survival skills\, and more. Open to 15 women\, 21 years and older.  Be ready for an intense weekend packed with skill development. \nWe will meet at Smith Falls on Friday\, August 8 at 1:00 PM for introductions\, camp set-up\, kayak safety lessons\, and a short kayak trip on the river before sun down. On Saturday\, August 9\, we will spend much of the day kayaking the river while taking in miles of Nebraska’s beautiful late summer scenery. We will end the day with dinner and a campfire conversation with women who work on the Niobrara river. August 10 we will wake up with the birds on a hike around the falls\, prepare a campfire breakfast\, and take group photo.\n\nApplications will be accepted until June 27. Those selected to participate will be notified by July 1.  Selected participants will be invoiced $175 with the payment due by July 8. Anyone not selected on the first round will remain on a wait list. \nAPPLY NOW

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Outdoor Heritage Education Complex located within Platte River State Park for our Steel Plate Challenge! The Steel Plate Challenge is a speed shooting competition that consists of standardized stages with 5 steel targets\, ranging in size from 10″ round plates to 18×24″ rectangular plates from 7 yards – 35 yards away. Open to novice and experienced shooters ages 16 and up. \nREGISTRATION \nRegistration is required. REGISTER HERE \nCost: $20 fee per person or $10 per person for those bringing their own firearms and ammo\, payable upon arrival. \nEquipment requirements: .22 (ONLY) rifles and handguns provided. Participants may bring their own .22 (ONLY) with their own ammo as none will be provided for personal equipment. All firearms must be in a case and will be inspected upon arrival. University of Nebraska-Lincoln herpetologist Dennis Ferraro and his lab will lead a live snake encounter featuring most of Nebraska’s 29 snake species. The live snake exhibits will be set up open-house style in the Schramm Education Center classroom and will be available on both Saturday and Sunday from 10 am – 4:30 pm.\n\nAt this free event\, you can see most of Nebraska’s 29 snake species\, meet UNL herpetologist Dennis Ferraro\, ask an expert your snake questions\, and even see venomous snakes up close. Join us to learn more about the amazing\, diverse snakes that call Nebraska home.\n\nThis is a free event. Regular Schramm Education Center admission fees will apply for anyone opting to visit the Education Center in addition to the event. A state park vehicle permit is not required in the Education Center parking lot.
