DESCRIPTION:Second Shots Pistol is designed to build on the handgun skills introduced in our FIRST SHOTS course. It’s also a good refresher for those who are years out of practice. \nStudents learn more about ammunition\, loading a magazine\, clearing a pistol and locking the slide back\, and handling malfunctions. Plus\, students get the practical experience of loading and shooting a variety of handgun styles and calibers in the range. \nIn the range\, the basics of stance\, sight picture\, and trigger control are emphasized to maximize success. After completing this class\, participants will be prepared to safely use the range on their own. \nOverall\, Second Shots Pistol teaches the basic knowledge\, skills\, and attitude necessary for owning and using a handgun safely. The small class size allows students to ask questions and receive individual advice. \nCourse covers: \n\nHandgun knowledge & review safe handling\nReview fundamentals of handgun shooting\nAmmunition knowledge\nActual range practice\nA variety of pistols\, ammo\, and targets provided\n\nPlease bring your own eye and ear protection. \nIf you have your own pistol\, you may bring it to use on the range (be sure to bring 50 rounds of ammunition). \nClosed-neck shirts and closed-toe shoes are recommended. \nFor students age 16 and over. SUMMARY:Spring Archery League
DESCRIPTION:Add excitement and variety to your range practice by joining our indoor archery league! \nThe league will meet at 7 pm on Thursday evenings for 8 weeks\, February 12 – April 2. If you can’t make it one week\, feel free to drop in during the center’s open hours and shoot the round. All targets must be shot at the Outdoor Education Center. \nEach week will be a different round\, with scores recorded\, and a cumulative score for the series. Target face and distances will accord to each round’s rules for ages and bow style. \nBow styles will be:\nCompound\nBarebow / Traditional / Genesis (not NASP)\nRecurve\nNASP (will shoot a standard NASP round each week – up to 19 years old) \nIndividual prizes will be awarded by drawing ‘tickets’. Tickets are earned by attendance\, top score each week\, most overall improved\, and top overall score. The number of prizes awarded will depend on number of entries (minimum of 1 prize per 5 entries). Weekly top score tickets will be awarded for each bow style represented. Final cumulative scores tickets may involve combined divisions\, depending on participation. \nAges 8 and up. Previous archery experience required. \nParticipants without personal equipment may opt to use a rental bow (or if taking a class\, their class bow). \nSign up for all 8 weeks at once for $60 (20% discount for annual pass holders)\, or pay at the door for $9 per attendance. \nREGISTER NOW \nPlease call us at 402-471-6141 if you experience difficulty with registration.

DESCRIPTION:Add excitement and variety to your range practice by joining our indoor archery league! \nThe league will meet at 7 pm on Thursday evenings for 8 weeks\, February 12 – April 2. If you can’t make it one week\, feel free to drop in during the center’s open hours and shoot the round. All targets must be shot at the Outdoor Education Center. \nEach week will be a different round\, with scores recorded\, and a cumulative score for the series. Target face and distances will accord to each round’s rules for ages and bow style. \nBow styles will be:\nCompound\nBarebow / Traditional / Genesis (not NASP)\nRecurve\nNASP (will shoot a standard NASP round each week – up to 19 years old) \nIndividual prizes will be awarded by drawing ‘tickets’. Tickets are earned by attendance\, top score each week\, most overall improved\, and top overall score. The number of prizes awarded will depend on number of entries (minimum of 1 prize per 5 entries). Weekly top score tickets will be awarded for each bow style represented. Final cumulative scores tickets may involve combined divisions\, depending on participation. \nAges 8 and up. SUMMARY:Birds of a Feather at Mahoney State Park
DESCRIPTION:Registration is for our Birds of a Feather series is FULL! Those wanting to be on a waiting list can fill out the registration and we will contact you should an opening become available.  \nGet ready to go birding by participating in the Birds of a Feather program at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park’s newly renovated James Family Conservatory and Nature Center. \nThis is a program is intended for elementary-aged youth and chaperones. We introduce a different birding topic each session to begin the program. When weather permits\, we will head outdoors for a hike or time in the birding area. The program runs approximately 60-90 minutes and is offered on select Tuesdays at 10 a.m. \nRegistration for these events in required. REGISTER HERE \nEvent Schedule\nMarch 3 – Beginner Birding: Learn how to be a birder as we explore beginner birding topics: identification\, tools and resources\, where to go birding and more. \nMarch 24 – Bird Mist-Netting: Observe the process of mist-netting\, a tool used to catch and band birds for research. Get up close and learn about local bird species. \nMarch 31 – Spring Nesting: Discover a variety of nests that birds make and consider why they build them as they do and how they are adapted for this task. \nApril 7 – Feathers\, Forms and Functions: Consider how the form of a bird (beak\, feathers\, feet) relates to the functions they do to survive and thrive in the wild. \nApril 21 – Raptors: Discover the differences between hawks\, eagles\, owls and more as soar in and study their senses\, diet and adaptations. \nJuly 7 – Beginner Birding: Learn how to be a birder as we explore beginner birding topics: identification\, tools and resources\, where to go birding and more. \nJuly 14 – Bird Mist-Netting: Observe the process of mist-netting\, a tool used to catch and band birds for research. SUMMARY:Fly Tying for Beginners at the Turpin Outdoor Education Center
DESCRIPTION:Anglers can learn the basics of fly tying that will prepare them to catch trout and panfish this spring. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and Cornhusker Fly Fishers will host fly-tying workshops March 4th and 8th at the Turpin Outdoor Education Center in Lincoln. \nRegister to attend on Wednesday\, March 4th from 6-8 p.m. here: March 4 Fly Tying Class \nCANCELLED. Register to attend on Sunday March 8th from 2-4 p.m. here: March 8 Fly Tying Class \nThe cost is $10 per class. Come to one or both sessions; each essentially will be the same. Different variations of flies will be introduced during each session. \nThe workshop\, which is open to new and experienced fly tiers\, will include all materials and tools needed. Reading glasses are recommended for up-close work. Participants will have the opportunity to tie four to six flies. They also will learn about community resources available to continue tying flies on their own.
