Depending on who you talk to they are either an ecological oasis or a nuisance species\, we will touch on both in this final episode. These rodents are sometimes called keystone species as they provide homes and resources for many other organisms in their ecosystem\, but also have the ability to carry the bubonic plague. Then join us for an incredible opportunity to become a Nebraska Master Naturalist! \nNebraska Master Naturalist is a statewide program that recruits\, trains and manages naturalist volunteers. Master naturalists gain a network of peers with shared interests and receive unique continuing education experiences focused on nature and conservation. They also are invited to volunteer in a variety of education\, stewardship\, community science and recreation opportunities around the state. To date\, the Nebraska Master Naturalists Program has trained over 680 naturalists that have contributed over 100\,000 volunteer hours supporting Nebraska’s wildlife and wild spaces. \nOur training programs offer an immersive experience like no other\, combining fascinating coursework\, hands-on field trips\, and meaningful volunteer opportunities.\nWhether you’re a seasoned environmentalist or just starting your journey\, this program is perfect for anyone eager to make a positive impact on our local environment. Then join us for Nebraska’s Big Butterfly Count Virtual Training Workshop \nNebraska’s Big Butterfly Count is a community science project that is designed to collect statewide data in order to better understand butterfly diversity across Nebraska. During this virtual workshop you will learn about community science\, how to identify eastern/central Nebraska butterfly species\, and how you can contribute to Nebraska’s Big Butterfly Count. Participants will receive project resources\, guidance\, and support from community science project leaders. \nWe are looking for dedicated volunteers that are willing to conduct a survey at least once every other week\, from May 1st through September 30th. \n*Attendance on both dates and one associated field day is required to participate in this project* \nThis workshop is FREE to attend. Then join us for an incredible opportunity to become a Nebraska Master Naturalist! \nNebraska Master Naturalist is a statewide program that recruits\, trains and manages naturalist volunteers. Master naturalists gain a network of peers with shared interests and receive unique continuing education experiences focused on nature and conservation. They also are invited to volunteer in a variety of education\, stewardship\, community science and recreation opportunities around the state. To date\, the Nebraska Master Naturalists Program has trained over 680 naturalists that have contributed over 100\,000 volunteer hours supporting Nebraska’s wildlife and wild spaces. \nOur training programs offer an immersive experience like no other\, combining fascinating coursework\, hands-on field trips\, and meaningful volunteer opportunities.\nWhether you’re a seasoned environmentalist or just starting your journey\, this program is perfect for anyone eager to make a positive impact on our local environment. DESCRIPTION:July 28th\, 2025| 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm (CST) Register Here   \nUsing Native Plants: The Why\, What\, and How \nPresenter: Cathy Prettyman\, native plant gardener\, Nebraska Master Naturalist\, Native Planters of Blair\, Pollinator Alliance of the Heartland \nPresenter Bio: I’ve always had a love of nature. As a child I collected butterflies\, kept caterpillars as pets and explored the woods behind our home. I have been birding and gardening for over 30 years. I moved to rural Blair in 2015 and I fell in love with the prairie and learned about its plants. I became a Nebraska Master Naturalist in 2018 with the desire to learn more about our great state and to teach others the importance of the natural world. I am  involved with the PATH\, Pollinator Alliance of the Heartland\, a Nebraska based organization promoting the use of native plants in our landscape. I have helped design\, plant and maintain pollinator gardens at Ft Atkinson State Park in Ft Calhoun. I created and led the charge to plant a pollinator garden at Black Elk-Neihardt park in Blair and with the help of volunteers\, continue to maintain. I am involved with other Blair projects. Last year was the Blair  Main Street revitalization. I helped with selection and design of sidewalk beds using native plants. This year I’m designing native planting beds for the new dog park and an Art Alley project to be installed hopefully this fall.  Another project\, at the historic Florence Mill in Omaha\, is using native plants and trees to educate the public on the uses of the plants. This spring we added a native tall grass bed behind the mill.  \nThis webinar is part of the Master Naturalist Mondays webinar series. Nebraska Master Naturalist is a statewide volunteer conservation program.  Our program recruits\, trains\, manages\, and provides resources for our volunteer naturalist members. We use four strategies to meet Nebraska’s conservation needs\, Habit Stewardship\, Community Science\, Environmental Education & Interpretation\, and Outdoor Recreation & Skills.   \n  \nThis free webinar series will host a variety of presenters and subject matter within these four conservation strategies. Join Education Program Specialist Rob Briwa in exploring the ways cultures across time and space perceive one of North America’s most adaptable species\, the coyote (Canis latrans).
