Then join us for Nebraska’s Big Butterfly Count Training Workshop\, Saturday May 3rd 2025\, 1PM-5PM at the Crane Trust Nature Center\, Wood River \nNebraska’s Big Butterfly Count is a community science project that is designed to collect statewide data in order to better understand butterfly diversity across Nebraska. At this workshop you will learn about community science\, how to identify eastern/central Nebraska butterfly species\, and learn how you can contribute to Nebraska’s Big Butterfly Count. The Atlas uses non-lethal survey methods\, so no bees are harmed during the project. The training will take place outside\, so please bring water\, closed-toed shoes\, and sun protection. The Atlas is a collaboration between Xerces Society and Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. \nRegistration is required. REGISTER HERE \nWe will meet at the picnic tables outside of the Nature Center. A state park permit is required for entry.

DESCRIPTION:July 28th\, 2025| 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm (CST) Register Here   \nUsing Native Plants: The Why\, What\, and How \nPresenter: Cathy Prettyman\, native plant gardener\, Nebraska Master Naturalist\, Native Planters of Blair\, Pollinator Alliance of the Heartland \nPresenter Bio: I’ve always had a love of nature. As a child I collected butterflies\, kept caterpillars as pets and explored the woods behind our home. I have been birding and gardening for over 30 years. I moved to rural Blair in 2015 and I fell in love with the prairie and learned about its plants. I became a Nebraska Master Naturalist in 2018 with the desire to learn more about our great state and to teach others the importance of the natural world. I am  involved with the PATH\, Pollinator Alliance of the Heartland\, a Nebraska based organization promoting the use of native plants in our landscape. I have helped design\, plant and maintain pollinator gardens at Ft Atkinson State Park in Ft Calhoun. I created and led the charge to plant a pollinator garden at Black Elk-Neihardt park in Blair and with the help of volunteers\, continue to maintain. I am involved with other Blair projects. Last year was the Blair  Main Street revitalization. I helped with selection and design of sidewalk beds using native plants. This year I’m designing native planting beds for the new dog park and an Art Alley project to be installed hopefully this fall.  Another project\, at the historic Florence Mill in Omaha\, is using native plants and trees to educate the public on the uses of the plants. This spring we added a native tall grass bed behind the mill.  \nThis webinar is part of the Master Naturalist Mondays webinar series. Nebraska Master Naturalist is a statewide volunteer conservation program.  Our program recruits\, trains\, manages\, and provides resources for our volunteer naturalist members. DESCRIPTION:September 15th\, 2025| 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm (CST) Register Here   \nA conversation at a Nebraska Natural Legacy Conference regarding reintroduction of mussels to Cub Creek set in motion a series of questions that could be only answered through monitoring.  In this presentation Resource Management Specialist Jesse Bolli will take you through those questions while introducing you to the mussels of Homestead National Historical Park and why they matter.  \nPresenter: Jesse Bolli\, Resource Management Specialist\, NPS-Homestead National Historical Park \nPresenter Bio: Jesse Bolli began his position as the Resource Management Specialist at Homestead National Historical Park in September 2002.  His duties at Homestead include the management of the Nation’s second oldest restored tallgrass prairie\, a lowland bur oak forest\, Cub Creek and the wildlife within.  He is happiest when he is mentoring others\, helping them to see the delicate details of the natural world.  \nPrior to arriving at Homestead National Monument of America\, he worked in Florida\, Nebraska\, and Kansas as a federal wildland firefighter.  \nJesse received his Bachelors of Science in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences from South Dakota State University in Brookings\, South Dakota.  \nHe grew up near Burwell\, Nebraska on the homestead that his great granddad proved up on under the Homestead Act of 1862 in 1905.  It was on the homestead that he developed his love of the prairies and wildlife.   \n  \nThis webinar is part of the Master Naturalist Mondays webinar series. SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Want an opportunity to get your family outdoors over your winter break? Would you like to contribute to science? Join our Christmas Bird Count for Kids event at Schramm Education Center! Learn more about the birds that call Schramm home during the winter while participating in the longest running community science project in the country. During the event\, participants can choose to help count birds on a hike in the prairie or on a hike down to the Platte River. During the count\, we will be recording the number and type of birds we see. After we count\, we will join back up in the Schramm Classroom to tally our results and make bird crafts. We will be going out rain\, snow or sunshine\, so dress prepared for the weather! We’ll provide a limited number of binoculars\, so you’re encouraged to bring your own if you have them. If you choose to hike\, we will walk about a mile. The trails may be muddy or slick depending on weather conditions.\n\nChristmas Bird Count for Kids Schedule10:00-10:20: Christmas Bird Count Welcome\, Birding Basics\, and Introduction to Schramm Winter Birds in the Schramm Classroom10:20-11:30: Outdoor Bird Hikes11:30-12:00: Tally Results and Make Bird Crafts in the Schramm Classroom\n\nThis is the 126th year for the Audubon Christmas Bird Count. Each year\, thousands of volunteers help conduct an early-winter bird census in over 20 countries in the Western Hemisphere between the dates of December 14th and January 5th. Reports from each of these counts are sent to the Audubon Society\, which compiles the data to help inform researchers about the status of bird populations. When the Christmas Bird Count was first started in the year 1900\, it was held annually on Christmas Day to promote conservation\, hence the name.\n\nThe cost to participate is $5 per person (ages 3 and under free). The cost includes the program and admission to the Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass Members participate free. A state park vehicle permit is not required in the Schramm Education Center parking lot.
