Join NGPC staff as we work on activities such as invasive species removal\, seed collection\, trail maintenance\, brush piling\, and tree planting.\nRegister in advance if plan to attend so we can estimate head count for work materials: https://arcg.is/H1L5S2\nWear sturdy\, closed-toed shoes and long pants\, bring water\, and outdoor work/garden gloves. This session dives into how the situation unfolded\, the role of the Pet Advocacy Network\, and how collaboration helped contain the threat. Join us to learn what worked\, what didn’t\, and how we can better prepare for the next invasive species challenge. \nAbout the presenter: Ashley Brinkman is the Government Affairs Director at the Pet Advocacy Network (PAN)\, the advocacy group for the pet care community. She leads PAN’s Herpetological Committee work\, Habitattitude program efforts and is the main pet industry contact for the Aquatic Nuisance Species Task Force. Brinkman has direct experience coaching industry partners on how to respond to developing pet industry issues and operating as a liaison between industry and regulatory bodies like the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\, and state agencies across America. She also operates as the industry liaison for the Healthy Amphibian Trade Research Project and is the Director of Public Relations for the Healthy Trade Institute.

SUMMARY:When Fungi Attack: White Nose Syndrome in North America - Webinar

This webinar is presented by Shaun Dunn\, Nebraska Natural Heritage Zoologist for Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. \nPre-registration required:  REGISTER HERE \nAbout the presentation: Not all invasive species are easy to see or detect. The fungal pathogen Pseudogymnoascus destructans (or Pd) causes white-nose syndrome (WNS) in bats resulting in precipitous declines of many bat populations. Introduced to North America in the early 2000s\, Pd has spread to almost every state and province in the United States and Canada in just 20 years. While impacts to bat species in North America vary\, those impacted by the fungus have experienced a drastic reduction in population numbers (between 60% – 98%). Efforts to mitigate the impacts of Pd have included disinfecting hibernacula\, vaccinating bats\, and supplemental feeding of bats prior to hibernation. In this webinar we’ll look at how this fungus has moved across North America and the impacts it’s caused along the way. \nAbout the presenter: Shaun Dunn is the Nebraska Natural Heritage Zoologist for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (his dream job!). As a zoologist\, Shaun keeps track of Nebraska’s herps\, insects\, and small mammals while also working through mountains of paperwork. His recent projects include searching for spotted skunks\, conserving threatened and endangered beetles\, and tracking rattlesnakes. Before he was a zoologist\, Shaun was lucky enough to work with a variety of taxa including: bats\, beetles\, carnivores\, freshwater mussels\, raptors\, small mammals\, snakes\, and songbirds. When he’s not working\, Shaun likes to see how many more specimens he can put in his freezer before his wife notices. \nThere will be opportunity for a Q&A with Shaun after the presentation.

There will be opportunity for a Q&A after the presentation. \nPre-registration required:  REGISTER HERE \nAbout the program: \n‘What makes an insect invasive?’ ‘Is that even a thing?’  ‘How would we know if they’re in Nebraska anyhow – they’re so small!’  \nAll these questions answered and more\, at Friday’s webinar of Invasive Insects.  Every state has species that they consider invasive; that is\, not native and cause ecological and/or economic harm.  Nebraska is no different.  While other species might be bigger\, or easier to detect\, surveying for invasive insects is just as important\, and a critical aspect of the work done at the Nebraska Department of Agriculture. \nAbout the presenter: Natalia Bjorklund is the State Entomologist and Program Manager of the Entomology and Plant Pest Program at NDA.   She was a horticulturist prior her completing her PhD in entomology\, and starting at NDA\, and finds that having knowledge of insect pests and their host plant is very advantageous.

Join Nebraska Game and Parks outdoor educators\, Invasive Species staff and members of the Greater Omaha Scuba club for a fun\, late-morning aquatic habitat clean up at Prairie Queen Recreation Area on Sunday morning\, May 31. \nIn addition to removing litter and improving the lake’s appearance\, this event will help raise awareness about aquatic invasive species found in the waterbody\, and throughout Nebraska. These invasive species negatively impact recreation\, Nebraska’s economy\, and native aquatic life by outcompeting native species and disrupting the lake’s ecosystem. Events like this encourage community involvement while promoting stewardship and prevention efforts to help protect Nebraska’s water resources.  \nSafety and basic instruction will be given at the beginning of the event. You will be emailed prior to the event to confirm your registration and any needed details. We will provide trash bags & gloves for all those interested in helping to clean up trash while on the water.  \n We will meet at the boat ramp and dock just off of the intersection of 132nd Street and Cornhusker Road\, on the West side of the lake. This area is in the northernmost section of the lake. On google maps it is identified as Prairie Queen’s Recreation Area.  \nThis event is free and we welcome you to either borrow a kayak or bring your own! DESCRIPTION:Join us for Community Fishing Night at Halleck Lake! \nHosted by Nebraska Game and Parks\, community fishing events are held at venues across the state each spring and summer. \nLook for the Family Fishing Trailer\, where loaner rods and reels\, bait and fishing instruction are available free to participants. Fishing Instructors are also available to provide helpful tips and answer questions. This is the perfect opportunity for people of all ages who have never been fishing or haven’t fished for years to learn. \nAll participants ages 16 and older need a fishing license. SUMMARY:Stars\, Strolls & Smores at Skyview Lake
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting nature walk during a full moon! This family-oriented activity introduces participants to the cultural and natural history of our area trails\, lakes and natural resources.\n\nWe usually walk an average of 1-mile round trip. Each Moon Walk starts with a short introduction to the night’s program\, then we hike to a designated area where we enjoy presentations. Presenters are experts in their field and are from our local community. The evening wraps up with FREE smores! Most Moon Walks last from 1-2 hours. There is limited restroom availability. Dress in layers because the weather at the location may be different than it is in town. Pack water and snacks for the return trip. Bring a flashlight for cloudy nights and don’t forget the bug spray!\n\nPlease note: All Moon Walk times and places are subject to change due to the weather or other unforeseen circumstances.
