DESCRIPTION:Mondays in May\, you are invited to join in an evening of firearm education FOR women. \nThe Coaching class is a time for you to practice and advance your firearm skills while receiving individual instruction. SUMMARY:Homeschool Hikes at Schramm
DESCRIPTION:Homeschool Hikes is a monthly nature exploration program hosted by the Schramm Education Center geared towards homeschool families. Each month\, families can join a naturalist for a guided hike on the Schramm Park State Recreation Area hiking trails. During the program\, participants will ask questions\, draw\, observe\, and make discoveries in nature. Participants will have the opportunity to observe local phenomena\, plants\, and animals while exploring concepts such as patterns\, cause and effect\, and structure and function. \nThe cost to participate is $5 per person per program (adult and children are same price). This includes admission to the Schramm Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass members participate free. This program is recommended for ages 5 and up. Please register in advance so we can estimate attendance numbers: https://arcg.is/1HO45W0 . \nParticipants should dress in season-appropriate layers and wear closed-toed shoes that can get dirty. Hats and water bottles are recommended. DESCRIPTION:Second Shots Pistol is designed to build on the handgun skills introduced in our FIRST SHOTS course. It’s also a good refresher for those who are years out of practice. \nStudents learn more about ammunition\, loading a magazine\, clearing a pistol and locking the slide back\, and handling malfunctions. Plus\, students get the practical experience of loading and shooting a variety of handgun styles and calibers in the range. \nIn the range\, the basics of stance\, sight picture\, and trigger control are emphasized to maximize success. After completing this class\, participants will be prepared to safely use the range on their own. \nOverall\, Second Shots Pistol teaches the basic knowledge\, skills\, and attitude necessary for owning and using a handgun safely. The small class size allows students to ask questions and receive individual advice. \nCourse covers: \n\nHandgun knowledge & review safe handling\nReview fundamentals of handgun shooting\nAmmunition knowledge\nActual range practice\nA variety of pistols\, ammo\, and targets provided\n\nPlease bring your own eye and ear protection. \nIf you have your own pistol\, you may bring it to use on the range (be sure to bring 50 rounds of ammunition). \nClosed-neck shirts and closed-toe shoes are recommended. \nFor students age 16 and over. Rounds rotate weekly to provide experience across multiple formats\, helping archers prepare for competition or simply enjoy shooting with others.\n\nLeague nights are held on Thursdays at 6:00 PM\, beginning April 30. Participants will meet at the outdoor shooting tower before heading out in assigned groups to their starting targets on the field course.\n\nIf you are unable to attend Thursday league nights\, weekly targets will remain set for drop-in shooting during open hours (Friday through Tuesday\, sunrise to sunset). Archers may collect a scorecard and complete the round on their own time. Inspect bluebird boxes\, observe nests\, eggs\, and birds. Meet at the backwaters parking lot. \n  \nNoon-2 p.m. – Build Your Own Birdfeeders: Learn about birds that live near Ponca State Park. Create a pinecone and peanut butter feeder to take back to your cabin or home! There is a cost of $3 per person for this session. Meet at the Resource and Education Center. \n  \n3-5 p.m. – Owl Pellets: Learn how owls swallow their prey whole and then regurgitate the indigestible material. Participants will be given an owl pellet to investigate\, dissect\, and ID. There is a $4 cost per person for this program. \n  \nA valid state park vehicle permit is required for park entry. \n

SUMMARY:Walk to the Rock: Trail Trek Guided Hike
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Chimney Rock National Historic Site for the first of a series of guided hikes as a part of this year’s Your Parks Adventure: Trail Trek program! \nThis guided hike will begin at at 9 a.m. Mountain Time. Meet at the patio. After a welcome and introduction\, we will walk to the Dillion bridge and back to Trail B so visitors may take selfie pictures at the Trails Trek sign before returning to the patio. \nDuring the walk\, visitors will learn about the geology of the Chimney Rock\, where the Overland trails were in relation to Chimney Rock\, and interesting facts about what life was like for emigrants traveling through the North Platte Valley on their way to Oregon or California. \nBack at the patio\, visitors will learn about the typical foods that the emigrants ate along the trail. There will be examples of the food staples that the emigrants carried with them. Visitors will be encouraged to take Nebraska hardtack with them after the program. \nThis event is free but admission is required to enter the museum. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Ash Hollow State Historical Park’s Visitor Center on Saturday\, May 23 at 1:30 p.m. Mountain Time for a reception featuring new exhibit collection. \nKaren Little Thunder\, Phil Little Thunder and Paul Harney Soderman\, all descendants of Chief Little Thunder and General Harney\, key players at the 1855 altercation here in Ash Hollow\, will offer their comments and speak to the importance of the collection being returned to the area. The reception will open and close with a musical prayer for healing by Joseph Medicine Robe.  \nThe main topic is the 1855 massacre belongings which were returned to the family last fall and are now housed here at Ash Hollow. They have been held with the Smithsonian since 1856 and  formally accessioned in 1865. The exhibit includes a doll\, two pairs of moccasins\, a saddle pad\, quiver\, bow and arrow and a bison bladder pouch containing beautiful dyed quills. The items will be on display through May 25. \nGuests are welcome to stay and enjoy refreshments\, ask questions or tour the park until we close for the day at 4 p.m.   \nThis event is hosted by Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation\, Wander Nebraska and Nebraska Game and Parks. \nAdmission: $5 for ages 13 and up\, $2 for ages 12 and under \nA valid Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for park entry.

SUMMARY:Cutting Down Cedar Trees to Save the Forest - Zoom Webinar
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Nebraska Invasive Species Awareness Week\, invasive species professionals will be hosting Zoom webinars throughout the week! Join us on Tuesday\, May 26 at 1 p.m. CT to learn about invasive eastern red cedar trees and their environmental and ecological impacts. \nPre-registration required:  REGISTER HERE \nAbout the program: Schramm Park State Recreation Area in eastern Nebraska is a popular destination for hikers\, families\, and wildlife enthusiasts. The park features over 300 acres of oak woodlands\, riparian forest\, and eastern tallgrass prairie habitat. In recent years\, Schramm was designated a demonstration site for habitat conservation in the Nebraska State Wildlife Action Plan\, resulting in the creation of a habitat management plan for the park. In this plan\, eastern red cedar encroachment was identified as a major problem for the health of the park’s oak woodlands. \nEastern red cedar trees are a native species with invasive tendencies that can quickly take over fire-adapted ecosystems in the absence of periodic fire. In 2024\, with the help of state and federal funding\, contractors were hired to remove over 98 acres of red cedar trees as the first step in restoring our oak woodlands. In this presentation\, learn about the ongoing woodland restoration project at Schramm and the science behind it\, as well as strategies that we’ve used to educate and engage the public in our restoration efforts. \nAbout the presenter: Jen Ruyle is an Outdoor Education Specialist for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission based at Schramm Park State Recreation Area. Jen went to school to study biology\, completed an undergraduate research project on dung beetles\, and then went on to obtain a master’s in entomology. After many outreach presentations\, educational events\, and classroom visits to teach about insects\, she realized her true passion was environmental education. She has been working as an educator for 10 years. In her free time\, she is an avid gardener and is slowly converting her family’s acreage to native plants and trees. \nThere will be opportunity for a Q&A with Jen after the presentation.

We’ll kick things off with an introduction to the project at the posted start time and then get started. Volunteers will need to sign a standard volunteer waiver upon arrival. We are meeting in the park\, so a state park vehicle permit is required.

This session dives into how the situation unfolded\, the role of the Pet Advocacy Network\, and how collaboration helped contain the threat. Join us to learn what worked\, what didn’t\, and how we can better prepare for the next invasive species challenge. \nAbout the presenter: Ashley Brinkman is the Government Affairs Director at the Pet Advocacy Network (PAN)\, the advocacy group for the pet care community. She leads PAN’s Herpetological Committee work\, Habitattitude program efforts and is the main pet industry contact for the Aquatic Nuisance Species Task Force. Brinkman has direct experience coaching industry partners on how to respond to developing pet industry issues and operating as a liaison between industry and regulatory bodies like the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\, and state agencies across America. She also operates as the industry liaison for the Healthy Amphibian Trade Research Project and is the Director of Public Relations for the Healthy Trade Institute.

SUMMARY:When Fungi Attack: White Nose Syndrome in North America - Webinar

This webinar is presented by Shaun Dunn\, Nebraska Natural Heritage Zoologist for Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. \nPre-registration required:  REGISTER HERE \nAbout the presentation: Not all invasive species are easy to see or detect. The fungal pathogen Pseudogymnoascus destructans (or Pd) causes white-nose syndrome (WNS) in bats resulting in precipitous declines of many bat populations. Introduced to North America in the early 2000s\, Pd has spread to almost every state and province in the United States and Canada in just 20 years. While impacts to bat species in North America vary\, those impacted by the fungus have experienced a drastic reduction in population numbers (between 60% – 98%). Efforts to mitigate the impacts of Pd have included disinfecting hibernacula\, vaccinating bats\, and supplemental feeding of bats prior to hibernation. In this webinar we’ll look at how this fungus has moved across North America and the impacts it’s caused along the way. \nAbout the presenter: Shaun Dunn is the Nebraska Natural Heritage Zoologist for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission (his dream job!). As a zoologist\, Shaun keeps track of Nebraska’s herps\, insects\, and small mammals while also working through mountains of paperwork. His recent projects include searching for spotted skunks\, conserving threatened and endangered beetles\, and tracking rattlesnakes. Before he was a zoologist\, Shaun was lucky enough to work with a variety of taxa including: bats\, beetles\, carnivores\, freshwater mussels\, raptors\, small mammals\, snakes\, and songbirds. When he’s not working\, Shaun likes to see how many more specimens he can put in his freezer before his wife notices. \nThere will be opportunity for a Q&A with Shaun after the presentation.
