Sign up to join us at the Schramm Treehouse Classroom for a kite-making workshop on Free Park Entry Day and in celebration of Nebraska Bird Month. Dominique Ellis with the Center for Great Plains Studies and Great Plains Art Museum will lead this hands-on\, kid-friendly workshop. We’ll start with a short presentation about the rich cultural history of kites\, look at some Nebraska birds for inspiration\, and then dive into constructing and decorating your own bird kite to take home.\nPlease register in advance here: https://arcg.is/1XCqvT1. Whether you have questions about where to fish\, what species are in a waterbody\, or how management decisions are made\, this is a great opportunity to learn more and have your questions answered by a fisheries professional. \nAquatic Invasive Species station – Game and Parks staff will also have a station where visitors can learn more about aquatic invasive species identification and prevention in Nebraska\, as well as an Outdoor Cooking Trailer where staff will demonstrate how to make milk can cooker fish. \nYouth Lifetime Fishing Permit Drawing – Those who attend will also have the opportunity to enter youth (age 15 and under) into a Nebraska half price youth lifetime fishing permit drawing. \nFishing and park entry permits are not required on May 16\, 2026. \n

SUMMARY:Hammer’s Hill Exhibit Dedication at Rock Creek Station
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Rock Creek Station Visitor Center Museum as we dedicate our newest exhibit installation\, which tells the story of the Hammer’s Hill cache. This exhibit features a collection of prehistoric Native American artifacts discovered locally in Jefferson County\, Nebraska\, in the 1960s. Stone tool caches like the Hammer’s Hill cache are rare to find intact and provide a special glimpse into the life of the early indigenous peoples of the Great Plains. \nFormer Nebraska state archeologist Rob Bozell and Doug Kapke\, one of the original discoverers of the cache\, will kick off the open house and speak on the significance of the find and how the items were found and cared for over the years before their donation to the park. A ribbon cutting by the Fairbury Chamber of Commerce will take place following and light refreshments will be provided. Guests will have time to browse the museum after the ribbon cutting. \nThis event is free and open to the public and takes place on Nebraska Game and Parks annual Free Fishing and Park Entry Day. Guests visiting the park will not need to purchase a park entry permit to enjoy the event.

SUMMARY:Homeschool Hikes at Schramm
DESCRIPTION:Homeschool Hikes is a monthly nature exploration program hosted by the Schramm Education Center geared towards homeschool families. Each month\, families can join a naturalist for a guided hike on the Schramm Park State Recreation Area hiking trails. During the program\, participants will ask questions\, draw\, observe\, and make discoveries in nature. Participants will have the opportunity to observe local phenomena\, plants\, and animals while exploring concepts such as patterns\, cause and effect\, and structure and function. \nThe cost to participate is $5 per person per program (adult and children are same price). This includes admission to the Schramm Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass members participate free. This program is recommended for ages 5 and up. Please register in advance so we can estimate attendance numbers: https://arcg.is/1HO45W0 . \nParticipants should dress in season-appropriate layers and wear closed-toed shoes that can get dirty. Hats and water bottles are recommended. DESCRIPTION:Second Shots Pistol is designed to build on the handgun skills introduced in our FIRST SHOTS course. It’s also a good refresher for those who are years out of practice. \nStudents learn more about ammunition\, loading a magazine\, clearing a pistol and locking the slide back\, and handling malfunctions. Plus\, students get the practical experience of loading and shooting a variety of handgun styles and calibers in the range. \nIn the range\, the basics of stance\, sight picture\, and trigger control are emphasized to maximize success. After completing this class\, participants will be prepared to safely use the range on their own. \nOverall\, Second Shots Pistol teaches the basic knowledge\, skills\, and attitude necessary for owning and using a handgun safely. DESCRIPTION:Join us at Chimney Rock National Historic Site for the first of a series of guided hikes as a part of this year’s Your Parks Adventure: Trail Trek program! \nThis guided hike will begin at at 9 a.m. Mountain Time. Meet at the patio. After a welcome and introduction\, we will walk to the Dillion bridge and back to Trail B so visitors may take selfie pictures at the Trails Trek sign before returning to the patio. \nDuring the walk\, visitors will learn about the geology of the Chimney Rock\, where the Overland trails were in relation to Chimney Rock\, and interesting facts about what life was like for emigrants traveling through the North Platte Valley on their way to Oregon or California. \nBack at the patio\, visitors will learn about the typical foods that the emigrants ate along the trail. There will be examples of the food staples that the emigrants carried with them. Visitors will be encouraged to take Nebraska hardtack with them after the program. \nThis event is free but admission is required to enter the museum. Not sure where to begin? \nTry Rifle is your place to start! \nThis safe and first-time friendly program covers basic safety rules\, handling demonstrations\, and starter techniques. Participants get to shoot on the range as part of this one-hour class! And whether rifle shooting turns out to be your thing or not\, students walk away with the ability to be safe and have fun wherever adventure takes them next. \nAll equipment provided. SUMMARY:Celebrating American Heritage: Memorial Day at Arbor Lodge
DESCRIPTION:While many countries have their own days of remembrance\, Memorial Day is an American Holiday. Arbor Lodge honors our fallen service men and women with a Memorial Day display May 17-31\, 2026. Learn the history of Memorial Day and its early beginnings as Remembrance Day. Guests will also enjoy a display of historic flags and patriotic items from within the Arbor Lodge Collection. \nA special program will be hosted on Saturday\, May 23 at 11:30 a.m. in the Sun Room. Local historian\, Amanda VanderBroek\, will present “A Boy in Years\, A Man in Deeds: Stories from researching WWI fatalities of Otoe County”. Enjoy hearing some American classics from harpist\, Laura Collingham from 11-11:30 a.m. and from 12:30-4 p.m. \nThe event is included with Arbor Lodge Mansion admission. SUMMARY:Museum Exhibit Reception at Ash Hollow
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Ash Hollow State Historical Park’s Visitor Center on Saturday\, May 23 at 1:30 p.m. Mountain Time for a reception featuring new exhibit collection. \nKaren Little Thunder\, Phil Little Thunder and Paul Harney Soderman\, all descendants of Chief Little Thunder and General Harney\, key players at the 1855 altercation here in Ash Hollow\, will offer their comments and speak to the importance of the collection being returned to the area. The reception will open and close with a musical prayer for healing by Joseph Medicine Robe.  \nThe main topic is the 1855 massacre belongings which were returned to the family last fall and are now housed here at Ash Hollow. They have been held with the Smithsonian since 1856 and  formally accessioned in 1865. The exhibit includes a doll\, two pairs of moccasins\, a saddle pad\, quiver\, bow and arrow and a bison bladder pouch containing beautiful dyed quills. The items will be on display through May 25. \nGuests are welcome to stay and enjoy refreshments\, ask questions or tour the park until we close for the day at 4 p.m.   \nThis event is hosted by Nebraska State Historical Society Foundation\, Wander Nebraska and Nebraska Game and Parks. \nAdmission: $5 for ages 13 and up\, $2 for ages 12 and under \nA valid Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for park entry.
