DESCRIPTION:Do you have a little one who loves animals\, nature\, and the outdoors? Are you looking for opportunities to explore the outdoors together with your children? Join us for Little Saplings\, Schramm Education Center’s early childhood nature discovery program. Little Saplings\, a monthly program designed for children ages 2 – 5 and their adult caregiver\, will bring nature themes to life for your child through story time\, sensory activities\, crafts\, and outdoor exploration! \nThe series is held on the first Wednesday of every month from 9 – 10 am and 10 – 11 am.  The cost to participate is $5 per child and $5 per adult per program and includes admission to the Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass members participate free. A State Park Vehicle Entry Permit is not required in the Schramm Education Center parking lot. DESCRIPTION:Join Ponca State Park Naturalists on the Corps of Discovery Trail to watch the moon rise!  \nMeet at the Riverfront Playground for guided hikes (approximately one hour) along the beautiful wooded trails. These hikes will include some steep inclines and are considered moderately challenging. Hikers are encouraged to bring water and snacks. \nHandheld flashlights will be provided. Guests can bring their own headlamps or flashlights if they prefer. \nHike are scheduled for following dates and times: \nApril 1 at 7:30 p.m.\nMay 1 at 8:45 p.m.\nMay 31 at 9:45 p.m.\nJune 29 at 9:15 p.m.\nJuly 29 at 9 p.m.\nAugust 27 at 7:45 p.m.\nSeptember 26 at 6:45 p.m.\nOctober 25 at 5:45 p.m.\nHike may be cancelled due to weather or staffing. SUMMARY:Spring Archery League
DESCRIPTION:Add excitement and variety to your range practice by joining our indoor archery league! \nThe league will meet at 7 pm on Thursday evenings for 8 weeks\, February 12 – April 2. If you can’t make it one week\, feel free to drop in during the center’s open hours and shoot the round. All targets must be shot at the Outdoor Education Center. \nEach week will be a different round\, with scores recorded\, and a cumulative score for the series. Target face and distances will accord to each round’s rules for ages and bow style. \nBow styles will be:\nCompound\nBarebow / Traditional / Genesis (not NASP)\nRecurve\nNASP (will shoot a standard NASP round each week – up to 19 years old) \nIndividual prizes will be awarded by drawing ‘tickets’. Tickets are earned by attendance\, top score each week\, most overall improved\, and top overall score. The number of prizes awarded will depend on number of entries (minimum of 1 prize per 5 entries). Weekly top score tickets will be awarded for each bow style represented. Final cumulative scores tickets may involve combined divisions\, depending on participation. \nAges 8 and up. Previous archery experience required. \nParticipants without personal equipment may opt to use a rental bow (or if taking a class\, their class bow). \nSign up for all 8 weeks at once for $60 (20% discount for annual pass holders)\, or pay at the door for $9 per attendance. \nREGISTER NOW \nPlease call us at 402-471-6141 if you experience difficulty with registration.

Those wanting to be on a waiting list can fill out the registration and we will contact you should an opening become available.  \nGet ready to go birding by participating in the Birds of a Feather program at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park’s newly renovated James Family Conservatory and Nature Center. \nThis is a program is intended for elementary-aged youth and chaperones. We introduce a different birding topic each session to begin the program. When weather permits\, we will head outdoors for a hike or time in the birding area. The program runs approximately 60-90 minutes and is offered on select Tuesdays at 10 a.m. \nRegistration for these events in required. DESCRIPTION:Registration is full for this event. \nJoin us for a Beginners Fly-Fishing and Fly-Tying Class at Ponca State Park April 11. \nAnglers can learn the basics of fly fishing such as casting\, fly tying\, and basic knots\, intended to prepare them to catch trout and panfish this spring. DESCRIPTION:Mondays in April\, you are invited to join in an evening of archery FOR women\, taught by women. \nThe Coaching class is a time for you to practice and advance your archery skills while receiving individual instruction. \nCoaching is available from 5:00-6:30 pm with a flexible arrival time. \nAll equipment is provided\, but if you have your own you are welcome to bring it. \nThe sessions will be taught at an indoor archery facility and space is limited. \nAges 16+ \n$40/participant (20% discount if you have an annual pass) \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Bumble Bee Ecology & Conservation Webinar
DESCRIPTION:The Nebraska Bumble Bee Atlas is community science project focused on tracking and conserving Nebraska’s native bumble bees. We invite you to attend our virtual events this spring to learn about the project and how you can become a volunteer. These webinars are a great opportunity to learn more about native bumble bees\, and what you can do to help them. \nIn this webinar we will discuss bumble bee ecology\, how that interacts with ongoing conservation issues\, and what we can all do to help. The good news is that we can all contribute. Beyond participating in our Bumble Bee Atlas projects (bumblebeeatlas.org)\, protecting\, creating\, and restoring habitat is the key. SUMMARY:Wildcat Hills Preschool Programs
DESCRIPTION:The Wildcat Hills preschool programs will meet once a month at 10am MT at the Wildcat Hills Nature Center. Certified staff will lead various programs that include a story\, hands-on activities and themed lesson. Activities will focus hands-on learning and observations\, specifically targeted for early learners’ ages 2-6 years. \nA valid Nebraska Game and Park Entry Permit will be required for this FREE program. Children must be accompanied by an adult. \nStaff reserves the right to cancel or reschedule programs due to unforeseen circumstances. \nPlease contact the Nature Center at 308-436-3777 for more information or if you are in need of special accommodations for these programs. \n\nSeptember 9\, 2025 – Birds of Nebraska\nTweet\, tweet! SUMMARY:Wise & Wild at Mahoney State Park
DESCRIPTION:Nature enthusiasts ages 18+ are invited to attend the Wise & Wild program on select Tuesdays at 10 a.m. at Eugene T. Mahoney’s newly renovated James Family Conservatory and Nature Center. \nThis program is designed for adults who love the outdoors and want to enjoy time in the parks. We will share a variety of nature-related topics with activities indoors and out. Join us on your own or bring along friends of any age. Free program. \n2026 Event Schedule\nMarch 10 – Beginner Birding: Learn how to be a birder as we explore beginner birding topics: identification\, tools and resources\, where to go birding and more. \nApril 14 – Bird Mist-Netting: Observe the process of mist-netting\, a tool used to catch and band birds for research. Get up close and learn about local bird species. \nMay 12 – Tardigrades & Tiny Things: Explore the micro and macro world in the park as we collect samples and see what is hiding in plain sight. \nJune 16 – Wildflowers & Watercolors: Learn about wildflowers while creating a simple watercolor artwork\, which you will complete as you explore our gardens and prairie. \nAugust 18 – Going Bullfrogging: Learn all about bullfrogs and their biology\, then try catching some at the lake with a net or fishing pole. Following the program\, we will head to the Marina. \nSeptember 1 – Pond Ecology: Use dip nets\, scopes and more to explore life in the lake. We will take a close look at critters we find and try to identify them. Meet at the Owen Marina. \nSeptember 22 – Primitive Shooting Sports: Try using a “wrist-rocket” sling shot and then throwing a spear with an atlatl as you practice to improve your precision and accuracy. Following the program\, we will head to the range. \nOctober 6 – Dutch Oven Desserts: Discover Dutch Oven cooking as we share pointers for perfect desserts. Help add ingredients and then enjoy some delicious desserts. \nNovember 10 – Forest Hike: Hike along wooded trails to discover the forest after the leaves have fallen. Dress for the weather. Trail is hilly\, uneven and has steps. We wills start at the tower by Riverview Lodge. \nDecember 1 – Phenology: A Study of Nature’s Calendar: Learn how to keep a journal to record nature’s changes through time. Observe migrations\, budding trees\, emerging insects and more. \n  \nA valid Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for park entry. Programs are subject to cancellation due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances. Please dress appropriately for the weather and the activity.
