SUMMARY:Stars\, Strolls & Smores at Willow Creek SRA
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting nature walk during a full moon! This family-oriented activity introduces participants to the cultural and natural history of our area trails\, lakes and natural resources.\n\nA park permit or day pass is required for this event.\n\nWe usually walk an average of 1 mile round trip. Each Moon Walk starts with a short introduction to the night’s program\, then we hike to a designated area where we enjoy presentations. Presenters are experts in their field and are from our local community. The evening wraps up with FREE smores! Most Moon Walks last from 1-2 hours. There is limited restroom availability. Dress in layers because the weather at the location may be different than it is in town. Pack water and snacks for the return trip. Bring a flashlight for cloudy nights and don’t forget the bug spray!\n\nAll Moon Walk times and places are subject to change dueto the weather or other unforeseen circumstances.

SUMMARY:Kayak Cleanup at Zorinsky Lake
DESCRIPTION:Join Nebraska Game and Parks outdoor educators and partners for a night of kayaking and cleaning up your local aquatic habitat at Zorinsky Lake on Tuesday evening\, August 11. Because what’s good for wildlife is good for people too. \nThis is part of our statewide kayak clean up series. Once a year we gather at multiple locations on the same evening and work to collect a large amount of trash. This teamwork builds a great community! \nWe will provide trash bags and gloves for all those interested in helping to clean up trash while on the water. We will meet at the Zorinsky Lake Trailhead parking lot\, just East of 168th street on the North side of the lake.  \nSafety and basic instruction will be given at the beginning of the event. You will be emailed prior to the event to confirm your registration and any needed details. \nThis event is free and we welcome you to either borrow a kayak or bring your own! Due to limited kayak supply\, we do require registration. \nIf you would like to use a kayak from Nebraska Game and Parks\, REGISTER HERE  \n(Kayaks are available to people ages 10 & up\, and are limited on a first come first serve basis.) \nIf you are bringing your own kayak\, or cleaning up on land\, REGISTER HERE  \nFor questions please contact Wildlife Educator Savannah Allen at savannah.allen@nebraska.gov.

SUMMARY:Teaching Ecology and Applied Sciences Using the Grassland Biome
DESCRIPTION:August 31st\, 2026| 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm (CT) Register Here   \n  \nNebraska’s grasslands\, covering half the state\, support ecology\, economy\, and culture while fostering biodiversity\, resilience\, and food production. I will offer an overview of grassland ecology/management and introduce lesson plans and trunks with hands-on materials on ecosystems\, soils\, plants\, carbon cycling\, human impacts\, global health\, and grassland communities. \n  \nPresenter: Cheryl Dunn\, University of Nebraska-Lincoln\, Grassland Specialist-Herbarium Curator \n  \nPresenter Bio: Cheryl Dunn is the Grassland Specialist and Herbarium Curator in the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. She primarily teaches courses in plant identification and grassland ecology while leading outreach efforts that promote the conservation and appreciation of Nebraska’s native prairies. Her work focuses on plant identification\, grassland education\, invasive species\, and connecting students and the public with the ecological importance of the Great Plains. \nThis webinar is part of the Master Naturalist Mondays webinar series. Nebraska Master Naturalist is a statewide volunteer conservation program.  Our program recruits\, trains\, manages\, and provides resources for our volunteer naturalist members. We use four strategies to meet Nebraska’s conservation needs\, Habit Stewardship\, Community Science\, Environmental Education & Interpretation\, and Outdoor Recreation & Skills.   \nThis free webinar series will host a variety of presenters and subject matter within these four conservation strategies. SUMMARY:Christmas Bird Count for Kids
DESCRIPTION:Want an opportunity to get your family outdoors over your winter break? Would you like to contribute to science? Join our Christmas Bird Count for Kids event at Schramm Education Center! Learn more about the birds that call Schramm home during the winter while participating in the longest running community science project in the country. During the event\, participants can choose to help count birds on a hike in the prairie or on a hike down to the Platte River. During the count\, we will be recording the number and type of birds we see. After we count\, we will join back up in the Schramm Classroom to tally our results and make bird crafts. We will be going out rain\, snow or sunshine\, so dress prepared for the weather! We’ll provide a limited number of binoculars\, so you’re encouraged to bring your own if you have them. If you choose to hike\, we will walk about a mile. The trails may be muddy or slick depending on weather conditions.\n\nChristmas Bird Count for Kids Schedule10:00-10:20: Christmas Bird Count Welcome\, Birding Basics\, and Introduction to Schramm Winter Birds in the Schramm Classroom10:20-11:30: Outdoor Bird Hikes11:30-12:00: Tally Results and Make Bird Crafts in the Schramm Classroom\n\nThis is the 127th year for the Audubon Christmas Bird Count. Each year\, thousands of volunteers help conduct an early-winter bird census in over 20 countries in the Western Hemisphere between the dates of December 14th and January 5th. Reports from each of these counts are sent to the Audubon Society\, which compiles the data to help inform researchers about the status of bird populations. When the Christmas Bird Count was first started in the year 1900\, it was held annually on Christmas Day to promote conservation\, hence the name.\n\nThe cost to participate is $5 per person (ages 3 and under free). The cost includes the program and admission to the Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass Members participate free. A state park vehicle permit is not required in the Schramm Education Center parking lot.
