DESCRIPTION:Ring in the new year in the great outdoors with a guided first day hike at Ash Hollow State Historical Park! Meet in the Overlook Trailhead parking lot at 10 a.m. on New Year’s Day for a hike. This moderate 1.2-mile hike starts off a bit steep and rocky\, then tapers off to a nice\, smooth hiking trail until you descend into the hollow again (strollers not recommended). \nFeel free to join us at the Visitor’s Center after the hike (around noon) for a potluck lunch — bring a soup or side to share. Tableware will be provided. \nIn 2026\, Nebraska Game and Parks will join the nation in celebrating 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This milestone is a unique opportunity to connect Nebraskans with the state’s rich natural\, cultural\, and outdoor heritage. To commemorate the occasion\, park staff will be handing out free 250th Anniversary First Day Hike stickers\, while supplies last! \nParticipants should dress for the weather and remember to bring snacks and water\, and binoculars\, if desired. Friendly pets are allowed on a six-foot leash. A valid 2026 Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for entry and can be purchased at the park. \n

DESCRIPTION:Kick off the year with a first day hike at Eugene T. Mahoney State Park on New Year’s Day! \nMeet at the James Family Conservatory & Nature Center. Walk through the conservatory and explore the nature center where you’ll find an art activity and more! The hike will start at 2 p.m. along the park’s paved path\, which is wheelchair and stroller friendly. We’ll have a warm campfire for roasting marshmallows\, while supplies last. \nPrepare for the hike: dress in layers\, wear a hat\, bring a water bottle and check the forecast. Dogs are allowed on a six-foot leash. \nNote that programs may be altered due to weather and trail conditions. Check back for cancellations/modified schedules if severe weather advisories are in the area. \nA 2026 park permit is required for entry.

Enjoy views of prairie vistas and oak woodlands along the historical Oregon Trail while chatting with park staff about the history and landscape of Rock Creek Station. \nParticipants can expect a laid back hike suitable for beginners. The hike will take place on the Legacy Loop trail\, a mowed grass trail with gentle moderate slopes. The guided portion of the hike will be around one mile\, starting and ending at the park Visitor Center. Warm up in the Visitor Center after the hike with hot chocolate and snacks provided. \nA valid 2026 Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for entry and can be purchased at the park.

Meet at the trailhead parking areas near Bullhead Pond\, across from the swimming beach at 5 p.m. for a scenic sunset hike along the Platte River on the Chain-of-Lakes Trail. Hikers may be able to catch a glimpse of a white-tailed deer\, or even a great horned owl swooping through the trees as the sunset fades along the river. The hike is an easy 1-mile loop. \nParticipants should dress for the weather and remember to bring snacks and water\, and binoculars\, if desired. Participants will have the opportunity to observe local phenomena\, plants\, and animals while exploring concepts such as patterns\, cause and effect\, and structure and function. \nThe cost to participate is $5 per person per program (adult and children are same price). This includes admission to the Schramm Education Center after the program. Schramm Family Pass members participate free. This program is recommended for ages 5 and up.
