SUMMARY:Nebraska's Big Butterfly Count In-person Training Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Do you love butterflies?  Are you a community member interested in conservation and science? Then join us for Nebraska’s Big Butterfly Count Training Workshop\, Saturday May 3rd 2025\, 1PM-5PM at the Crane Trust Nature Center\, Wood River \nNebraska’s Big Butterfly Count is a community science project that is designed to collect statewide data in order to better understand butterfly diversity across Nebraska. At this workshop you will learn about community science\, how to identify eastern/central Nebraska butterfly species\, and learn how you can contribute to Nebraska’s Big Butterfly Count. We absolutely need to suppress their growth and spread and limit the damage they cause. However\, Nebraska also has a lot of other plants that we call ‘weeds’ or ‘weedy’ that really aren’t harmful at all. Many of them are just opportunists who can appear quicky and in big numbers when nearby plant competition is reduced by grazing\, flooding\, fire\, or other forces. Those opportunists provide great pollinator and wildlife value or\, at worst\, just come and go without really causing any lasting damage to anyone or anything. Let’s talk about how to tell the difference and why it matters. \nPresenter: Chris Helzer\, The Nature Conservancy \nChris Helzer is the Nebraska Director of Science and Stewardship for The Nature Conservancy. He conducts research on grasslands\, helps develop and test land management strategies\, supervises the stewardship of the Conservancy’s staffed preserves in Nebraska\, and spends lot of time blathering on about how beautiful and valuable prairies are. DESCRIPTION:Are you interested becoming a community scientist and helping conserve Nebraska’s rare\, at-risk butterflies? If so\, please join Nebraska Game and Parks Commission wildlife biologists on Saturday\, May 31 at the Schramm Education Center to learn how to participate in the monarch and regal fritillary community science project. Help us collect valuable data about these at-risk species in the state. \nThe training will open with a presentation at 1 p.m.\, followed by a mock survey. During this extensive training\, you will learn how to walk an assigned transect\, count butterflies\, and assess habitat features.
