DESCRIPTION:October is Nebraska Reptile Month! To celebrate\, the Nebraska Game and Parks is hosting its annual reptile awareness art contest.\n\n\n\nAll Nebraskans are invited to submit original artwork featuring Nebraska native reptiles from October 1-31\, 2026. Entries can be uploaded as scanned images or photos here: https://brnw.ch/21wNlEZ\n\n\n\nThis year’s contest includes the following categories by grades: Kindergarten-2nd grade\, 3rd-5th grade\, 6th-8th grade\, 9th-12th grade\, and adults age 18+.\n\n\n\nAll participants will receive reptile-themed “swag” for their submissions in the mail. Find more information about Nebraska’s native reptiles and artistic inspiration here.\n\n\n\nWinners will be announced during the first week of November on the Nebraska Game and Parks Facebook Page.

SUMMARY:Living History Weekend at Fort Atkinson
DESCRIPTION:Travel 200 years back in time and experience history on the Great Plains at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park! \nOngoing demonstrations featuring military and civilian life of the 1820s will occur throughout the park. Reenactors portray fur traders\, coopers\, blacksmiths\, carpenters\, tinsmiths\, weavers and other period trades. The History Trailer will also be displayed during the event. SUMMARY:Night Sky Viewing at Merritt Reservoir
DESCRIPTION:Designated as an International Dark Sky Park in 2022\, Merritt Reservoir is a prime location for stargazing. Join us on Saturday evening\, October 3\, 2026\, for a ranger-led night sky viewing event. \nRangers from The Niobrara National Scenic River and members of the Platte Valley Astronomical Observers will be there to give you a program and then guide you through the wonders of the night sky at this uniquely dark location. There will be several telescopes to look through. \nTime: 8:30-11:30 p.m. CT \nLocation: Boardman Creek Campground at Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area \nWhat to bring: Bring layers and blankets of needed. If you have a red covering over a flashlight to protect your night vision\, that is also recommended. Be prepared to ask a lot of questions! \nReschedule date: If weather conditions are cloudy/windy\, this event will be rescheduled for Friday\, October 2nd.
