Nature enthusiasts ages 55+ are invited to attend the Wise & Wild program on select Tuesdays at 2:30 p.m. at Eugene T. Mahoney’s newly renovated James Family Conservatory and Nature Center.
This program is designed for seniors who love the outdoors and want to enjoy time in the parks. We will share a variety of nature-related topics with activities indoors and out. Join us on your own or bring along friends of any age. Free program.
March 11 – Listening for Frogs: Did you hear that? Learn common frog calls then go on a hike to listen for them.
April 8 – Iris Varieties: Join us for an iris identification hike. We’ll talk about varieties of the flower and walk through the iris garden.
May 13 – World Migratory Bird Day: “Water Sustaining Bird Life”: Celebrate World Migratory Bird Day by learning about key environments for migratory birds, such as stop-over and breeding areas.
June 10 – Gardening for Pollinators: Celebrate Nebraska Wildflower Week! Learn about native plants and pollinators from an NGPC horticulture team!
July 8 – Turtles of Nebraska: Learn about the species of turtles found in Nebraska and their adaptations then walk down to Owen Marina to look for turtles!
August 12 – Fly-tying for Beginners: Join us to learn more about the art of fly-tying from members of the Cornhusker Fly Fishing group.
September 9 – Monarch Butterfly Tagging: September is a great month for observing butterflies. Learn the process of tagging monarchs around the pollinator garden.
October 14 – Dutch Oven Cooking: Gather around the fire as we make White Chicken Chili, Venison Chili, and Apple Cider Cinnamon Rolls. Mmmmm cast iron cooking!
November 11 – What Do Birds Eat?: Discover the diets of common birds in the area then make your own suet cookie or recycled bird feeder to take home for bird feeding!
December 9 – Animal Tracks & Signs: What happened here? Even though animals tend to avoid people, we can see the clues they leave behind.
These programs are free, but a 2025 Nebraska state park permit is required for park entry.
