Join Schramm Park State Recreation Area Naturalist Leah Stirrup as she shares a digital museum that she created using ArcGIS StoryMaps to showcase the history of the Gretna State Fish Hatchery and Schramm Park State Recreation Area. Leah is an undergraduate student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). For her senior thesis, she analyzed over 90 historical Nebraska Reports of the Commission, newspaper clippings, peer-reviewed articles, and Nebraskaland magazines and distilled important information to create a digital museum exhibit from these resources. Within this StoryMap, there are interactive maps, photos, and text that tell the story of the Gretna State Fish Hatchery. The StoryMap includes information about the geologic history of the area, fish culture, archaeology, and Umonhon fish cultivation practices.

About the Speaker
Leah Stirrup is a park naturalist at Schramm Park State Recreation Area. She completed a Bachelor of Arts in geology, anthropology, and Spanish with minors in Native American studies, archaeology, and piano in May 2024 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She will attend the University of Kansas to obtaining a Master’s in Anthropology with a focus in circumpolar geoarchaeology.

This program is free to attend and will take place in the Schramm Education Center classroom. Enter the building on the west side, through the double doors next to the Nebraska Game and Parks logo. Visitors who wish to also tour Schramm Education Center will need to pay admission and enter through the main entrance. No park permit is required in the center’s parking lot.
