Schramm Christmas Bird Count for Kids

Want an opportunity to get your family outdoors over your winter break? Would you like to contribute to science? Join our Christmas Bird Count for Kids event at Schramm Education Center! Learn more about the birds that call Schramm home during the winter while participating in the longest running community science project in the country! Schramm naturalists will lead bird hikes down to the Platte River, in the forest, and an indoor feeder watch so you can choose your own adventure. After we count, make bird crafts and help tally our results so that we can share them with the annual Audubon’s Christmas Bird Count Project! The Christmas Bird Count is a 123 year old event that takes place every year around the Christmas holiday where bird lovers of all ages and skills count all the birds they can see in a 24 hour period.
General admission to Schramm Education Center is required to participate in the event. This is a family friendly event, and will include crafts, coloring sheets, and other activities for youth after the bird counting. Families may stay and count birds for as much time as they wish but we recommend that you arrive on time in the morning for an event introduction, where we will learn more about the project, about birds we might see, and split into bird watching teams. We will be going out rain, snow or sunshine, so dress prepared for the weather! We’ll provide a limited amount of binoculars, you’re encouraged to bring yours if you have them.

10:00-10:15: Christmas Bird Count Welcome and Birding Basics
10:15-11:30: Outdoor Bird Hikes & Indoor Feeder Watch
11:30-12:00: Tally Results, Learn about Schramm Winter Birds, and Make Bird Crafts

Admission to the Schramm Education Center: $10 for adults, $7 for youth and seniors, kids 3 and under free. Schramm Family Pass members attend this event free! A state park vehicle permit is NOT required in the Education Center parking lot.
