Night Sky Viewing at Merritt Reservoir

October 3 @ 8:30 pm - 11:00 pm
The Milky Way glows above Merritt Reservoir on a clear night.

Designated as an International Dark Sky Park in 2022, Merritt Reservoir is a prime location for stargazing. Join us on Saturday evening, October 3, 2026, for a ranger-led night sky viewing event.

Rangers from The Niobrara National Scenic River and members of the Platte Valley Astronomical Observers will be there to give you a program and then guide you through the wonders of the night sky at this uniquely dark location. There will be several telescopes to look through.

Time: 8:30-11:30 p.m. CT

Location: Boardman Creek Campground at Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area

What to bring: Bring layers and blankets of needed. If you have a red covering over a flashlight to protect your night vision, that is also recommended. Be prepared to ask a lot of questions!

Reschedule date: If weather conditions are cloudy/windy, this event will be rescheduled for Friday, October 2nd. Please check this calendar event or check with the park office for updates.

Contact: For questions regarding this event, please call 402-367-3320.

This event is free of charge, but a valid state park permit is required.
