Travel 200 years back in time and experience history on the Great Plains at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park!

Living History events occur from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. the first weekend of each month between May and October. Ongoing demonstrations featuring military and civilian life of the 1820s will occur throughout the park. Reenactors portray fur traders, coopers, blacksmiths, carpenters, tinsmiths, weavers and other period trades. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the reenactors.

Aug. 5 & 6 event schedule:

10 a.m. – Troop Call

10:30 a.m. – Church call (Sunday only at the school room in the north barrack)

11 a.m. – “Demonstration of Winnebago Drumming” (Sunday only at the Camp Recovery platform by cabin)

noon – Assembly/noon gun at the flag pole

1 p.m. – “Brief History of the 5 Tribes” by Nancy Gillis of Humanities at the Visitor Center (Omaha, Ponca, Pawnee, Santee & Winnebago tribes)

2 p.m. – Garrison Defense at the powder magazine area

2:30 p.m. – Wounded trapper coming into fort at the north barrack

3:30 p.m. – Whiskey rations at the flag pole

4:30 p.m. – The Retreat (roll call, inspection and evening gun). Flag is lowered, call in sentries—cease all challenging.  End of public hours.

On-going: Trapper cabin, Council House, laundresses, blacksmith, tinsmith, spinning/weaving, bake oven, etc. Gun will be fired at 10, noon & 4:30 (at least).

A valid Nebraska Park Entry Permit is required for all vehicles to enter the park and can be purchased at the site. A per person fee is required at the Harold W. Andersen Visitor Center of $4 per adult and $1 per child.
