Ring in the new year in the great outdoors with a guided first day hike at Mormon Island State Recreation Area. Meet at the trailhead parking areas near Bullhead Pond, across from the swimming beach at 5 p.m. for a scenic sunset hike along the Platte River on the Chain-of-Lakes Trail. Hikers may be able to catch a glimpse of a white-tailed deer, or even a great horned owl swooping through the trees as the sunset fades along the river. The hike is an easy 1-mile loop.

Participants should dress for the weather and remember to bring snacks and water, and binoculars, if desired. Friendly pets are allowed on a six-foot leash.

A valid 2026 Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for entry and can be purchased at the park.
