Butterfly Training at Homestead National Historic Park – CANCELLED

May 18 @ 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Please note that the in-person training at Homestead on May 18, 2024 has been cancelled. If you were interested in attending an in-person training, please consider the June 1st training at Schramm OR contact Brett Andersen at

Are you interested becoming a community scientist and helping conserve Nebraska’s rare, at-risk butterflies? Then the Nebraska Game and Parks Monarch and Regal Fritillary Survey may be for you!

The Monarch and Regal Fritillary Survey is a community science project where volunteers help biologists document Monarch and Regal Fritillary Butterflies in Nebraska. This survey primarily takes place in the tallgrass prairie ecoregion of Nebraska (the eastern quarter of the state). However, we are working to expand surveys throughout the rest of Nebraska.

This in-person training will take place on May 18th from 1-5 p.m. (CST) at Homestead National Historic Park. Anyone interested in butterflies is welcome to join the first hour of the training to learn general information about monarchs, regal fritillaries, common plants and other community science opportunities. After this initial introduction, anyone that is interested in becoming a survey volunteer is invited to stay to learn how to participate.

To register for this training, please fill out the Google Form.

If you are unable to make either of the in-person training dates, you can complete a virtual training on your own time by watching this recorded training.

While the video training covers everything you need to know to participate in the project, in-person trainings will involve hands-on experience and are preferred.

For more information, please contact the survey leader, Cody Dreier, at or 402-471-1755.
