Each Christmas season since the early 1900’s, the National Audubon Society, dedicated to the conservation of birds and the habitats on which they depend, has sponsored a citizen science Christmas Bird Count. Ponca State Park a certified official site for the Christmas Bird Count is hosting their count on Wednesday, December 18th. The public is invited to participate, no experience is necessary.
Join members of the Loess Hills Audubon Society in helping us report sightings while comparing notes with other bird enthusiasts. We expect to see over 50 species of birds ranging from Greater Prairie Chickens to Northern Shrikes, the “Butcher Bird”.
Owling scheduled for 6:00 am and other bird species at 7:30 am. Please dress for the weather. Bring binoculars and bird books. If you do not have binoculars or a bird book Ponca State Park will loan them to you. At noon a free soup feed will be provided to all participants.
Park entry permit required.
