First Day Hike @ Mormon Island State Recreation Area
Dec 31 2019 @ 11:00 pm – Jan 1 2020 @ 1:00 am

Enjoy a warm bonfire and friendly conversation and then take off on a Midnight Hike along Mormon Island State Recreation Area’s Platte River Trail led by the Park Superintendent. Experience sounds and senses that the night can bring in the woods along the Platte River. The Hike will end with warm drinks, snacks, and games at the heated park shop building. Meet at Lake #2 Cedar Campground East Parking Lot. The hike is moderate difficulty and approximately one mile. Be sure to bring warm clothes, hiking/snow boots, flashlights or headlamps, leash for pets.

First Day Hike @ Platte River State Park

Platte River State Park is bringing in the New Year with hiking and bird watching. Hikers will have the option of climbing the observation tower after the hike. The hike will offer birding along the Stone creek trail as it passes our small water fall. A bonfire and hot chocolate will be provided. Visitors can climb the Lincoln Journal Star Tower and enjoy birdwatching along the Stone Creek trail by the park’s iconic waterfall. Hiker recommendations: water, snowshoes, snacks, and warm clothes. First Day Hike @ Wagon Train State Recreation Area
Jan 1 @ 9:00 am

Meet at the Area 2 campground for a 1 to 2 mile hike with easy access to trails for wildlife viewing, bird identification and track identification. A campfire and hot chocolate and cider will be available. Be sure to dress for the weather. Bring water, snacks, camera, binoculars, if desired.

First Day Hike @ Chadron State Park

Meet at the Sawmill Shelter for a moderate one mile trail through the park for amazing scenic views! An optional easier route is available as well. Pets are welcome but must be on a leash no longer the 6ft. Be sure to dress for the weather (warm clothes and any snow gear) and bring your own water.

First Day Hike @ Fort Kearny State Recreation Area

Bring your camera and your hiking shoes and join us for an easy one mile hike along the Fort Kearny Hike Bike Trail. Enjoy fresh air, fun, and wildlife viewing. Hot chocolate will be served after the hike.

First Day Hike @ Rock Creek Station State Historical Park

Meet at the Visitor Center for an easy one mile history hike. Follow wagon ruts along the Oregon and California trails across the bridge to a reconstructed 1860s ranch. Although the hike is easy, it may be difficult for those pushing strollers. Pets are welcome but must be on a leash no longer the 6ft. Be sure to dress comfortably for the weather. After the hike, join us in the Visitor Center for hot chocolate.

First Day Hike @ Sherman Reservoir State Recreation Area
Jan 1 @ 10:00 am

Meet at the Redwood Campground parking lot to embark on a moderate two mile hike around the reservoir. We’ll be on the look out for deer, turkey, pheasant and other wildlife.  Bring water, your camera or binoculars, and be sure to dress for the weather. Apple cider and donuts will be provided.

First Day Hike @ Johnson Lake State Recreation Area
Jan 1 @ 11:00 am – 2:00 pm

Meet at the Johnson Lake State Recreation Area office for an easy one to two mile hike along the Larry Roper trail where visitors may see migratory birds and other winter wildlife. Chili and cinnamon rolls will be available at 12:30pm. Dress for weather. Coffee and water provided.

First Day Hike @ Ash Hollow State Historical Park
Jan 1 @ 10:00 am

Join us for a very scenic one mile hike with lookouts over the North Platte River Valley. Participants will have a great vantage point to see numerous species of wildlife, geographic, and historical features. Be sure to dress for the weather and bring water and a camera or binoculars for wildlife viewing.  A potluck lunch will follow at 12pm; participants are encouraged to bring a dish to share. Meet at the Visitors Center.
